| some advice on home theater connections please | maximum15 Apr 30, 2003 6:26 PM | | I am about to purchase a rptv and have some questions about connections. Currently, I have a Yamaha RX-V596 surround sound receiver. I have digital cable and dvd player going into the receiver and the receiver output to my 14 year old tv, subwoofer, front, rear, and center speakers. I am wondering if this is the best way to go when I get a new set. The receiver is Dobly 5.1 and DTS capable. Is this the best connection method when I get the new tv? My speakers are of a quality level that will be better than provided with the tv. |

VIDEO
DVD to TV use Component Video
Digital Cable to TV use Component Video
For these two, use S-Video if you don't have component video outs, and if no S-Video, then Composite (yellow)
AUDIO
DVD to reciever use optical or coaxial
Digital Cable to TV use optical or coaxial
For these two, use RCA plugs if you don't have other options (red and white)
As far as the way the speakers and sub are setup, that should be fine the way it is.
If you have component video switching, you can put all of the VIDEO connections IN to your reciever, and just have one OUT to the TV to display all of the different inputs. |

I like having just one connection to the tv but will change if it provides a better picture. I just wasn't sure if this was preferable or if hooking the video outputs directly to the tv was preferable. |

Unless the manufacturer made some severe design constraints to save money for some reason, it is not that difficult to produce a decent video switch for HDTV component video signals. |

You have video switching for what's called "composite video" and probably also "S-video" but not for "component video" which is a set of three separate cables that transfer the video from one device to another.
If you plan on using HDTV or "progressive scan" DVD, then you'll need to either hook those sources directly to the TV set, or else you'll need a newer A/V receiver that does provide switching for that type of video connection. Also, you mention that you're about to buy an RPTV, but don't say just what sort of set that'll be. If it's not an HDTV-ready set, then all of the foregoing is irrelevant.
Hope this clears it up for you
