| Rogers cable HDTV | bruinfn4lf May 7, 2003 9:40 AM | | Do any Canadians out there have Rogers HDTV cable, I will be purchasing a 57" HDTV and was wondering if upgrading from digital cable to the HDTV box is worth it. I don't watch prime time sitcoms, but would like to watch sports in hi-def. Also wondering if it improves the standard def channels and if you have to switch from component to S-video when switching between hi-def and standard. |
| I have no problems with Canadians | Mojo_Jojo May 7, 2003 10:30 AM | | The fact that they pronounce "about" as "a boot" and say 'eh' all the time is quaint. The Mounties have red uniforms that make us all happy. I feel bad because all the Betty's move to the US. But because of that, Canada will never have an over population problem. I don't think what kind of equipment you have really matters, though. Things will never be that good for you there, so why bother even trying. Just my two cents. |
| I have no problems with Canadians | bruinfn4lf May 7, 2003 7:47 PM | | I have resided in Canada for 39 years and have never ever heard a Canadian say aboot instead of about. I don't know where this story, rumour, fallacy started but I hope it stops.
What comedy club or casino could I catch your act in; never mind I wouldn't want to go down there I hear you all have guns and aren't afraid to use them. |
| I have no problems with Canadians | Monstrous Mike May 8, 2003 6:00 AM | | I'll bet if they saw the show "Talking with Americans" with Rick Mercer they'd think twice about making fun of Canadians. Or maybe not.
If I'm going to make fun of somebody, at least I'll make the effort to get it right. |
| what's that show a boot? | Mojo_Jojo May 8, 2003 11:05 AM | | Rick Mercer: Your President is a greedy fool.
American: Ya got me there. |
| re: Rogers cable HDTV | Keith from Canada May 7, 2003 12:52 PM | | First off, I'll let you know that I have Rogers cable HDTV and I'm very pleased with it. I'll address each of your points in turn:
1) "I will be purchasing a 57" HDTV and was wondering if upgrading from digital cable to the HDTV box is worth it"
-- Congrats on the new TV...you should love it! First off, you state that you'll be using HDTV to watch sports rather than regular cable broadcasts. If that's the case, you won't be too pleased with the content offered by HDTV in Canada. The only sports you'll see are -- some NFL football games including 1 Sunday game and the Monday night game; The Stanley Cup Finals; some college basketball and football.
2) "Also wondering if it improves the standard def channels"
-- The HDTV box will have no impact on your regular standard definition channels.
3) if you have to switch from component to S-video when switching between hi-def and standard"
-- This depends on how you do your video switching however, you have to run your HDTV terminal via component video cable.
Hope this helps. |
| re: Rogers cable HDTV | bruinfn4lf May 7, 2003 1:22 PM | | I will run component direct from cable box to TV, if I don't need a S-video for cable I won't run one.
I was thinking maybe the regular channels wouldn't transmit over the component jacks as the analog channels don't transmit sound over the digital coax you have to switch to analog on your processor. Luckily my processor (Arcam Alpha10 c/w Dave module) automatically switches between analog and digital.
Also are any golf tournaments broadcast in HD? |
| re: Rogers cable HDTV | Keith from Canada May 8, 2003 5:33 AM | | The Masters was broadcast in HDTV and, as a Canadian, you can probably guess how big a deal that was this year (go Mike!!!). There are rumours floating around that there will be more tournaments broadcast in HD (especially the Majors) however, nothing has yet been announced. One thing you'll quickly learn about HD is that if the sporting event is broadcast by CBS, there's a pretty good chance they'll get it in HD if possible. ABC is also pretty good at giving HD sports content but now that ESPN has a dedicated HD sports channel (not available in Canada until TSN get's their act together), you'll likely see a little less out of them in the future.
On the bright side of the news -- TSN is partially owned by ESPN and ESPN has recently taken the plunge head-long into HD. Rumours have it that TSN plans to follow suit...the only question is how long it will take. |

| On any given day any number of nations are our equal in .... | arc_light May 8, 2003 11:18 PM | | hockey now. Don't get me started on a rant.
In long track speed skating over the years the Dutch pretty much rule. Short track? Roller derby on ice....not worth mentioning when luck plays almost as big a part in the outcome as the skater's talent.
Curling prowess? We'd better be the best....we ice about a 1000 fold more participants than anyone else. Hell, I say hi to more people on my way to work than there are people playing the game in many of the countries we face at the Worlds. |
