| Only one rule apply when looking at power ratings. | Smokey May 8, 2003 8:42 PM | | And the rule of thumb is to buy most power your budget allows. You could never have too much power.
Beside power, look for amplifier's Dynamic Range rating also (A DR rating of 3 dB mean that it can deliver [momentary] power twice its RMS rating).
Very interesting chart however :) |

| re: Loudness | danbry39 May 10, 2003 1:33 PM | | Reference level is usually about 80 decibels, so your Klipsch will need less than one watt/channel to achieve this at one meter. I think the rule of thumb is that every time you double the distance, you subtract 3 decibels. So, if your viewing distance is 4 meters away, the sound will be reduced to 74 decibels.
Every three decibel increase is, in actuality, a doubling of the SPL. However, the human ear generally perceives a 10 decible increase as a doubling of volume.
Klipsch are about as efficient as speakers get. Still, I recommend that you buy as much power as you can comfortably afford. I drive my Klipsch reference speakers with an amp that puts out over 155 watts/channel, with all five channels being driven simultaneously. Not only does this give me plenty of headroom, but allows me the flexibility as to which speakers I might consider down the line.
Hope this helps. |
