| *HELP* Amp blew out can't get sound. | Opeth_PA Nov 5, 2003 7:30 PM | | My setup consists of a Marantz SR780 with the front channels being driven by Marantz monoblock 500 amps. One of the amps appears to have gone south. I get a loud hiss through it, I can switch it to either main speaker and get the hiss while not getting it through the other amp.
Ok, no problem I will just use the integrated amp on the rec until I can replace the amp.
So I plugged the speakers into the receiver, via bananna connectors, switched inputs to the CD player and I am getting no sound from the mains.
Is their anything I have to switch or change in the menu to make the speakers be driven by the integrated AMP? Its been over 5 years since I have set this up.
Thanks.

| hmmm... | Slosh Nov 7, 2003 4:48 AM | | Did you just connect the bad MA-500 to the other speaker and not switch the RCA cable to the other pre-out? If so, it may be the pre-out circuitry on the reciever is the problem. Since you're not getting any sound from the receiver's own amps I suspect something went wrong with its pre-amp section. I would try connecting one of the CD/DVD player's analog RCA outputs directly to the MA-500 in question to see if the amp is in fact the problem. Be careful doing this though if you have no way to adjust the volume. If it turns out that the amp's alright you'll probably want to replace, rather than repair, the receiver.
Five or six years ago a good quality A/V receiver started in the $800-range IMO. Today $500 will get you similar quality plus the latest surround formats, of course. |
