additional input desired on prewiring new homenewellcr

Hello Folks,

I posted the other day about prewiring a new home, http://forums14.consumerreview.com/crforum?viewall@@.efa0229. While I appreciate AVMASTER's comments, I would still like to get some additional input on my AV prewiring job. Does anyone know of another board where I might post my questions?

Thanks,

Chris

First, another good location to post is www.hometheaterforum.com.

A couple of other suggestions I have:

1. While I understand wanting to run the cable yourself to save money, I'm with AVMaster on this one. Let a qualified installer do it. I know I personally wouldn't want to guarantee the work of a novice home-owner (no offense intended), and I doubt any builder/electrician will either. With all you are spending on the house, AV system etc., don't scrimp on the in-wall wiring.

2. Test the entire thing out before finishing the walls. Bring your receiver in and hook it up. Even if you don't have all the speakers etc, carry a small pair of speakers around to each location to test. Bring a TV/DVD player in to test the video connections. You will want to correct anything now before the walls/ceilings are finished.

3. Plan for all possible future needs. I'd consider speaker wiring for a 6.1, 7.1 or 9.1 HT system in the future. If a projector is even remotely in the plans, run the wiring for it now (at a minimum, composite, S-video, and component video). I'd also consider possibly a DVI connection. Possibly two each of for DVI and component - with new HD sources coming out all the time (DVD players, Set-top boxes, PVRs etc.).

4. You didn't mention outside speakers. I too have a whole house audio system, and we have speakers on our front porch, back deck, and patio. It is great for parties or just relaxing outside. I'd consider pre-wiring speakers for those areas too.

Is some of this overkill? Possibly. But now is the time to do it, rather than trying to come up with a "fix" later. And all this will make your house more appealing to sell if you ever move.

Good luck.

I'm with JDaniel....either have it all done now by someone who know's what they are doing ....or run it behind the baseboards or the crown moudling....which might be your best bet if you don't know how many outlets you want or will need...or where and how you will set up the rooms in question..last thing you want is to be looking at a wall with outlets on them at eye level.....
