| Receiver questions | Craig H Nov 7, 2003 12:59 PM | | Right now I have a 2 channel Carver receiver model HR-772. I am looking at a Denon model AVR-3803 to get surround sound. Would switching from Carver to Denon be downgrading? The Carver has 140 watts per channel and gold RCA plugs. The Denon only has 125 watts per channel and does not have gold RCA plugs. Would I be able to hear the differance in power? Do gold RCA plugs make a differance? Or, should I just add a seperate amp and processor to my Carvers preamp outputs?
Thanks for the help. |

Now the carver may last for another 10 years, who knows, but personally I would invest in a good A/V receiver like the Denon you posted. It's rated at 110wpc so I dont think you will notice the difference. You could probably sell your old carver on e-bay to help pay for the new receiver. I recently upgraded to a home theater receiver and am very impressed. These new receivers not only process digital but also have dolby pro logic II (analog). It does a nice job of mixing in music to all channels from an analog source. Hope this helps. Paul. |

You wont necessairily be downgrading but gaining a Receiver that does what you want. Now if you got the $$$ id just get a Carver AVR but they can be pricey. I have a AVR 100 Carver back in the late 80's early 90's right at the start of surround sound. It had the rears but thats it no center channel no sub out or anything. I got a Kenwood(cant remember the #)to replace it and it worked fine. I wish I had the $$ for another Carver as I do believe it IS a better receiver than the Kenwood or even Denon but the Denon and Kenwood(and others) are good so I dont see it as a downgrade as your getting functions with the Denon(surround,LFE(sub out),etc) that you Carver does not have. Ive done what you did and have been happy with the results for.....well since 1992(several different receivers since 92 though). I do however :long" for another Carver and DO think next time I get a Receiver I will work some OT at work save my change and get a Carver :). |
