220V versus 110Viceblue8
Nov 8, 2003 1:39 AM
Hi,
I'm planning to purchase an A/V product here in the States, but I'd like to use it in Asia. As you guys might've known, Asia uses 220V, as opposed to 110V. I could've used a voltage stabilizer to bring it up to 220V. Is this recommended? Would it result in distortion or the possibility for lack of power? Anyone has done this before? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt that a voltage stabalizer would be any good for an A/V reciever. What kind are you talking about? One of those little travel ones? Or one of the expensive Cinepro ones or something? It'd probably be better, and cheaper, if you bought one there instead.

I'm thinking of the stabilizer made by Stavol, it's portable but not that small, and definitely not light. I'm afraid that would be the case, but it's hard to find good used product down there, so it might not necessarily be cheaper. Where can I find out more about Cinepro? Is that a well known brand for this? Thanks.

What kind of voltage stabilizer did you use? Care to recommend me some and where I can get more info on how to purchase it? Thanks a lot. What component did you use exactly?

I think it was Matsunaga with max power of 500 W, cost around equivalent to 30-40USD. I think the one you described should be fine as long as the max power is sufficient. I used it to power my receiver, CD player and it worked very well. At first I just used step-up/down transformer but the electricity at my area was not stable and when the voltage drop the receiver just quit working. After I replaced the transformer with this portable voltage stabilizer I had no problem.

www.codefreedvd.com

all 3 of those sites sell equipment from foreign regions, including step down convertors/tranformers. Which would allow the use of 110v equipment on 220v feeds.

If I remember right, the Onkyo 696 i bought 2 and 1/2 yrs ago was a dual voltage, with a voltage selector switch in the back panel. Has onkyo changed it in its newer models ?

One thing is certain, the US models will definitely be cheaper than special, dual voltage international models here.
