DIY subgrampi44
Nov 8, 2003 8:54 AM
I currently have a DIY sub as part of my HT system. It consists of a 250W plate amp, and a 4000 series MTX 15" driver in a 2.5 CF sealed enclosure. The output level of the MTX is actuall fairly good, but it has accuracy problems with some materials, especially music. I would like to replace the driver with a better one, but I'd like to use the same enclosure. I've been considering an Adire Tempest. I know for optimum performance of this driver would require a larger enclosure than 2.5 CF, but would it outperform the MTX in this enclosure?

Ok from my subwoofer program this is what a Tempest will put out in that enclosure with 250 watts

20hz-102dB ( at 1 meter)
30hz-107
40hz-111
50hz-113
60hz-113
70hz-113
80hz-113

Now these values will vary after you put it in a room, which is why you should buy a Behringer feedback Destoyer to get rid of any frequency humps or dips in your room. The sub will have an F3 (down 3 dB point) at 36 hZ which is pretty damn good. You won't blow up the sub until you put more then 600 watts on it for a long peiod of time
I'm pretty sure this will kick the sh!t out of the MTX, it will be way more accurate and probably just as loud if not louder. If you buy this you'll have a $600-700 subwoofer for so much less. This is why I encourage people to do it DIY, you can get so much performance for such a low price.

I have all the numbers for the MTX on its spec sheet. Any way you could plug in its numbers to your program to see how it would compare? Thanks.

Just let me know what numbers you need. Thanks.

Give me the numbers of

FS
QTS
QES
VAS
Xmax

If you can't find even one of these it won't work, but I can promise you that the Tempest or the Dayton DVC 15" drivers will be better then the MTX. These woofers have verly low FS so they can go low for home theatre. Car woofers (15") dont need to go that low because they aren't used for theatre so they have FS's from around 35-45, which won't be nearly as good as the tempest or the dayton. If you can give me ALL the parameters i asled we can do a direct comparison.

Here they are;

FS: 27.8 hz

Qts: .64

Qes: .67

Vas: 8.63 ft^3

Xmax: .37" (9.4mm)

20hz-97db
30hz-104
40hz-110
60hz-116
70hz-117
80hz-116

It's got an F3 of 42 hz, but a frequency hump around 60 hz, so it may sound loud at those frequencies giving the impression that it can go really low and loud, whic is quite typical of car woofers. The Tempest or Dayton will have a much cleaner sound and a more even response, better for music and movies. You could buy either the Dayton 15" DVC ($132) or the Adire Tempest ($150). The Dayton will go about 1-2 dB louder with 250 watts, but the Tempest will handle 100 more watts of power then the Dayton in this box (600 total). You really won't notice any difference between the two. Good luck.

Now what would be the numbers if I were to drop the Tempest in a 4 or 5 CF sealed enclosure? This is where I'm told the Tempest really starts kicking some serious butt!

4.55 cubic feet will have an F3 35 hz, this design will make the lower frequencies louder, but you can't put much more then 250 watts on it or you'l blow the driver.

20hz-103
30hz-108
40hz-111
50hz-113
60hz-113
70hz-113
80hz-113

You won't be able to go any louder then 113dB's unless you get some more power and put it in a smaller box. Don't forget you can put it in a corner and it will go louder, and the rooms gain will also add some more volume. You could try the 18" maelstrom, but it has an F3 of 50 hz in a 5 cf box.
