5.1, 6.1 or 7.1???Stereobug
Nov 9, 2003 12:50 PM
If I purchase a 6.1 or 7.1 A/V receiver with say 75 watts per channel and I am only using 5 speakers and a sub, am I getting 75 watts each or could I get more per speaker? Thank you for the help! I am looking to probably purchase a Harmon/Kardon.

This is probably a question to ask HK. You can email them tech questions and they usually respond within 2-3 days. I don't believe that the power from the rear channels are directed into the main channels but I could be wrong. They do rate pure stereo (front channels only) at a higher power than with surround included. I can say that i am quite pleased with the performance of my HK-320 which i purchased over 1.5 years ago. I have had no problems and have never been left wishing for more power. It seems that HK underrates their amps or something because i only have 55 watts per channel and it rocks. Anyway, hope this helps.

I think HK just rates their receivers more accurately, as opposed to some of the other companies who inflate their ratings. BTW, I understand 5.1 and 6.1, but where would the 7th speaker go in a 7.1 system?

Each channel will be able to deliver 75watts driven one channel at a time or perhaps 2 at the same time. This rating doesn't mean it will do all channels at the same instant.
Besides, this power is only needed when the signal demands it, rarely, and it is even rarer for all channels needing it at the same instant.
