Would there be a significant video image improvement on a Toshiba 55" HD-RPTV with this unit over my Toshiba SD-6200 with it's infamous "chroma bug"? The on-board SACD and DVD Audio decoders are a feature I also want to use...more so as I purchase more titles in the future.(Have 2 DVD-A's)
Or should I wait another year or 2 to see if new formats emerge or disappear? Will this unit be obsolete in 3 years from now? Thanks for help. |

It's basically SACD with the capacity to do visual images like you see with DVD-A. But, I read an article a few months ago that there are some potential issues with the backwards compatibility of SACD II. Since SACD II hasn't even hit the stores yet, we don't know if it will be an issue.
The 2200 is a player that I'm looking at seriously as well. Denon apparently worked with Burr-Brown to design a new DAC that could simultaneously decode PCM (DVD-A) and DSD (SACD) signals in their native format, which supposedly maintains performance while lowering the costs. Before, the only way to deliver a universal player for under $800 was to convert all of the DSD signals to PCM first, which supposedly degrades the audio performance with SACD playback. This is exactly what Pioneer's new $200 universal player does.
My only concern with the 2200 is that it seems to have the same gimpy build quality as my DVD-1000. Excellent performance, but it's not especially rugged.
As for DVD-A versus SACD. If I were to bet on one format, I would go with SACD simply because of its backward compatibility with CDs (at least for dual layer discs). But, the format war's not really a huge deal because universal players are increasing in number and decreasing in cost. The only thing to really watch out for is how SACD II affects things. |
