I can't speak for these particular receivers, but I can say these two companies are definitely in the upper end of high end when it comes to receivers. Personally, I think you tend to get a bit more receiver for the price with Denon. With the HK's, some of the price you're paying goes for the name. You can't go wrong with either though.

What receiver do you use? Any help would be great, what did you ever hear?

I currently have the Denon AVR-1603. I've listened to just about all of Denon's and HK's receivers at one time or another. There really isn't any audible differences in sound quality, it really comes down to how much you want to spend, what type of features you're looking for, and how much power you want. Like I said, for the same price I think the Denons tend to give a bit features and power. However, the HK's are very nice as well. It comes down to personal preference.

That Denon was also in the choices and the 1803 as well, what does it sound like? See I bought a Onkyo TS-601 and it is terrible, I upgraded my Onkyo 595 from last year to 6.1 and man this is terrible, the volume has to be turned up almost half way to get any sound out of it. The sub ouput is weak even at max, I thoght it was the receiver so I returned it for a replacement and it was the same, my buddy ended up getting a 701 and thats the same so I guess its the design, I loved my 595, I wish i didnt sell it now. I have a full Klipsch refference setup so they are efficient speakers?? I just dont want to get burned again.

I don't think questions like this will get any better results than reading other people's prejudices. A better source of info is on the "reviews" columns.

BTW, the position of the volume control is not a good yardstick to judge quality of amplifiers. Back in the old days almost all amplifiers produced their maximum output with the volume control at "12:00" o'clock position. Because in those days, main source for music was the turntable and pickup cartrige output voltages varied greatly. So, the other half of the volume control was for the extra gain, if needed. But arranging the volume control in such a way risked things. There is always the probability of some idiot coming and turning the volume control all the way up, just to see what happens!

Today all volume controls act the same way as you describe. The philosophy is that they are more foolproof that way... Besides majority don't use turntables and all source component now more or less have standardized outputs and we don't need the extra gain. Since all volume controls are logaritmic, if you want high SPL, you'll find it near the maximum position of the volume control.

I think most receivers are that way with the volume control now days. The Sony STR-DE545 I had was that way, and this Denon is that way. It depends on the source too. If I'm watching tv, I probably never have the volume past about 1/3. But if I'm watching a DVD or listening to music, it's in the upper half.

This Denon sounds great, and I can definitely tell it has more power and clarity than the Sony had (even though the Sony had a higher power rating). I have Polk bookshelf speakers, and I run a separate powered sub, so I don't know if I can compare my system to your's. I haven't heard the Denon's played through full range speakers. I would think it would sound fantastic on your Kilpsch speakers.

well, i should have said, "don't make a purchase depending soley on amp power rating." I guess my reply does open the door for a beatdown. Thanks for not swinging hard.
