I need to decide which a/v receiver I'm gonna buy for my home theatre. I'm gonna spend around 1500 dollars. My first choice has been Harman Kardon. But what do you think about those new Sony digital (s-master) receivers? Is Sony a good receiver manufacturer.

Personally, I would get a HK over a Sony any day. If you have $1500 to spend on a receiver then I would recommend the Harman Kardon AVR-630 @ 1299.00 + tax. You could also get there signature series (AVR-7200) on ebay for about the same price. Just search for Harman Audio on ebay and HK's store will come up.

Both h/k and Sony have had wildly inconsistent reliability with their receivers in recent years. Some of Sony's DE and DB models have had horrible reliability, and these new digital receivers are their first foray into higher powered digital amplification (they're been building digital minisystems, but these new S-Master receivers are much more powerful). Personally, I would avoid any radically new model line from Sony until they've been out for a while (their first production run of Wega TVs were a disaster). At least this model is one of their ES models, which means that you get a longer warranty.

h/k had a disastrous run of receivers a few years ago, which really pummeled their reputation. Supposedly, they've gone to a new outsource manufacturer and haven't had major problems the last couple of years. But, I would check some of the reviews on this board and look for some signs on the reliability of whatever model you're interested in.
