I'm buying an audio system (Rotel RCD-1072 cd player and Rotel RA-1062 integrated amp) and need to get an equipment rack as well. I have small room and I'm gonna put the rack on to my table since I only need a three-shelf rack. My question is what is the "right" shelf height meaning what is the optimal space between the next shelf and the top of the hifi. What space do you have. I have been told that ideally cd player should get 1.5-2 inches of free space on top and the amp 4 inches.

The amp/receiver is where most of the heat is generated. Depending on the rack, how open it is, an inch or two will be enough for it. If it is closed, more space is needed and some back holes for ventilation.
