Just installed my 5th OTC (On The Cheap) HT SystemWorf101

As some of you may know, I consider myself "Johnny HT Seed". It's my mission to bring my ex-hippie friends kicking and screaming into the current century. The neo-luddites (some of whom don't even have TVs) usually see one of my systems and then ask me to get them "the hook up". Problem is, they usually don't want to pay much. Most just want to watch an occaisional film from time to time. They don't want cable or HD or all that.

So I'm ususlly stuck with some old school TV and low end gear.

This is what I hit my friends with:

TV - Some Sony 27 incher CRT they had.
Mains - Some leftover Advents don't know number.
Center - BIC 62CLR - $100 off of ebay.
Sub - Ageis 12 - $200 off of ebay
Receiver - Onkyo 494 - $150 from me.
Rears - Klipsch KG-1's - $100 from my private stock.
DVD - Some Sony DVD/VCR thingy they got as a gift.

So for a total of $600 or thereabouts (some Rat Shack cabling was involved) my friends entered the world of HT and they're thrilled. Been showing THEIR system off to friends... Like the Lone Ranger here I feel my job is done. Come along Tonto, lets ride!!!

Anyone else doing the "hook up"?

although he has plenty of cash to spend, he refuses to sink much into speakers/receiver ,etc. I can't get through to him how important these pieces are!

So far he just bought an excellent tv = Sony 60" HD set.

so i'm trying to encourage this route instead of the BBuy route he wants to take. He even mentioned using his late 80's Advent floorstanders?!?!?!? uggghhhh

at least i DID talk him out of BOSE since that was his first want.
Well, at least you kept him out of Bose Hell....Worf101

Though more likely, had his wife or girlfriend been with him, no amount of cajoling would've kept him out of that trap. Outstading gear so far though.

Was all that gear new? It's a little harder for me sometime cause I gotta ebay, get cheap, canibilze my basement and closet stashes. What B&W's did your coworker go with? What monitors were involved?

Actually, the B&Ws are the new 700 series for the front, 705 fronts, matching center, and he went with the 601s for the rears (we couldn't justify the high price for the matching 700 series surrounds).

Actually, apparantly, the 700 series are so hot that they are on backorder. He is still waiting for a response 3 weeks after ordering them.

As far as the Cambridge equipment goes in the other systems, I was able to pick up most of that off of ebay from the hifi.com auctions. For that price, I found it hard to find anything else that matched in terms of quality of sound and build quality (opinion, of course).

I'm lucky that where I'm from originally (Boston) we have Cambridge Soundwork stores nearby so it lets me hear them (as well as those that want a new system).

The Marantz stuff, some new, some from AC4L.com, great prices for B stock stuff, never had a problem with any of them.

I introduced by bro in law to the world of good sound and he ended up getting much more expensive gears than mine: Musical Fidelity A3.2 separate CD, Pre and Power, and Dyn Contour 1.1. Too bad the room is not ideal to bring the most from the system. Later he asked me to install a HT system in another room consisting Yamaha receiver, Pioneer DVD and Energy Encore set.

I also did partial HT setup for my cousin in law, consisting JVC receiver (ex mine) and Wharf 8.1 front. He has problem finding a place for suround speakers and probably will add the center later.

My sister and one of my friend also got influence from me, but they setup themshelves.
I guess we are bad influence ;-)
Who was that masked man?Swerd

I attemted to do the same for my brother. Instead of going On The Cheap like da Masked Man, I managed to talk my brother into going on a full bore speaker audition trip, with yours truly as the guide. After about 4 or 5 such trips, he eventually bought an outstanding system that makes me envious.

Vanderstein 3A signatures front
Vanderstein centers and rear speakers (model ?)
Vanderstein 2Wq subwoofer
B & K Ref 30 Preamp/processor
B & K Reference amp 5 x 200 watts
Denon DVD player (model ?)

One of the regular posters here occasionally talks about his beloved Vanderstein speakers. Listening to my brother's Vandersteins has made me a member of that fan club. Too bad I can't afford some of my own.

Hey, missed you round here of late. You've one of the more "individual" screenames so I'm glad you're back. Yes... it's a sad thing when our "tastes" are not exceeded by our budgets. Sound's like your Bro's got a reall nice system. How do Vandy sub's stack up though? Didn't even know they made them...

Yours...

Yeah, sometimes I lurk and sometimes I work! I must have been working lately.

The Vandy sub is the best I've ever heard. Mind that it was set up with a lot of care. So it is hard to compare that to other subs where less time & effort may have been spent on the set up.

It contains three 8" drivers driven by 300 watts. It took 2 of us to carry it and it retails for $1200! It has a unique (to my knowledge) feature of having adjustable system Q. Read about it: http://www.vandersteen.com/pages/2Wqlit.html
