| Marky-MAF, are you out there? | Snowbunny May 10, 2001 8:44 AM | | Didn't you post a link one time for an on-line Canadian music seller, that you like to use? And what about a site for new Canadian music? I'm really liking Oh Susanna who is from your neck of the woods, and Be Good Tanyas from B.C. Thanks. |
| I'm in here!!! | maf May 10, 2001 9:41 AM | | Hi Snowy,
I probably posted the address for a couple of places that specialize in used vinyl, one in Toronto called Discovery records: www.discoveryrecords.com. I've ordered once from them and was very pleased; good quality, quiet vinyl and their selection is pretty good too. Another I've used Sweet Thunder Records in B.C. (www.sweetthunder.bc.ca). They specialize in jazz on vinyl, new and used.
Now I don't think that you're a vinyl hound like me. I do know of a very good online cd seller (introduced to me by who else? - dbi) called A&B Sound Online (www.absound.ca). I've never actually ordered from them but they come highly recommended. Also, my brother who lives in New York does all his on-line CD/DVD/SACD shopping at www.HMV.com, but I think that the pricing advantage there is more for Americans and their relatively BIG dollar.
Haven't heard Oh Susanna yet. But she's from you're neck of the woods - Vancouver - isn't she? I live in Ottawa (actually Aylmer, QC - just outside of Ottawa).

| Hey Mark, | Snowbunny May 10, 2001 7:45 PM | | do you guys have A&B sound back east? We don't have one in Kamloops, but there's one in Kelowna and Vancouver, and IMO, its one of the best record stores in Canada. They sell stereo stuff as well, and on Boxing Day they have a huge sale, like dvd players for $5, and the die-hards line up all night outside the store. But then again that's in Vancouver, so how cold can that be.
And I thought Oh Susanna was from Ontario. She gets support from the Ontario Arts Council. However, see magical dbi's comments below. I'm not sure if she'd appeal to you. But I will have some of her stuff on the Snowbunny Comp. Someday... |
| Do they sell vinyl? | maf May 11, 2001 9:06 AM | | Not only do we not have A&B, I had never heard of it until Dave mentioned then, and didn't realize they were a bricks andd mortar store until your post.
My favorite record store here is called Record Runner. They specialize in alternative music and have the only, albeit very small, new vinyl section, in Ottawa.
Have a good weekend.

| If I could just squeeze in for a moment ... | dbi May 10, 2001 2:04 PM | | I was just reading some about the new Oh Susanna album, Sleepy Little Sailor, in the May issue of Uncut magazine and the reviewer really liked it, giving it 4 out of 5 stars. She was actually born down here but is now based in Canada. Suzie Ungerleider is her name which I guess explains some of your fondness for her :-) Apparently both Jim White and Ryan Adams have given strong recommendations and her debut album is supposed to be very good too which the review characterises as "an Americana concept album based on a real historical event with a cast of extraordinary characters, whereas Sleepy Little Sailor is a dreamier collection of more personal songs." So how about a Rave Recs review, Snowbunny style?
Dave |
| Oh yeah, Ungerleider's my middle name! :-) | Snowbunny May 10, 2001 8:15 PM | | And I would give it a review, but isn't that what you just did, dear heart?
And on a completely different subject, I can't tell you how much I enjoy hearing the dark Mr. Nick Cave singing about kittens! |
| SUC ... just doesn't seem right for you | dbi May 10, 2001 9:57 PM | | You call that a review? I think you're just chickeeeennnnn! So what's the story about Nick and the kittens?
Dave |
| BTW, here's a couple more Canadian resources | dbi May 13, 2001 10:13 AM | | http://www.cdhitlist.com
http://www.mymusic.com
I haven't used either one yet but I think Mary talked recently about mymusic.com. Both ship from Canada and seem to have pretty good prices although probably not the selection some of the biggies provide.
I imagine you are probably already familiar with Canada's big Canoe internet network that links articles from all over your country and makes them available online. Lots of great reviews and info available. If you haven't used it, here is the music link http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/home.html.

| Dave, You Have a Good Memory... | Mary May 13, 2001 4:52 PM | | I just recently made a purchase from mymusic.com. It's too soon to give a full report but so far, so good. Upon placing my order, I immediately received confirmations of the actual order, and soon after a confirmation of the shipment and its contents. Everything was in stock. I'll followup after I receive the order, as well as review my Visa bill.
I have been burned recently by cdnow.com, and am looking for other sites to order from which are reasonable.
By the way, Dave, I love the Beck compilation that you put together for me ("Mary's Mix). It has been in heavy rotation this weekend.
Cheers!

| I'm a big Beck fan, but ... | dbi May 13, 2001 7:41 PM | | that comp didn't come from me. I did send you a Twilight comp recently. Did you receive that one OK? Hard to keep track who does what!
I use twec.com a lot because of all the discount coupons and have never had a problem but they have less frills than some of the biggies like cdnow and amazon.
