I was curious as to if anyone here is familiar with the music of Jimmy Smith ? I heard a cut from his recent dot com blues album on directv recently and really liked the bluesy organ. Is most of his music in this same manner or does it vary quite a bit. Most of his his stuff I see is on either Verve or Blue Note labels so I would think that most of the older recordings have good sound quality as well. Anyway, if anyone that is familiar with his work could leave some feedback I would appreciate it much.

one that comes to earliest memory is the midnight special with kenny burrell and stanley turrentine. this is a true classic. walk on the wild side and whos afraid of virginia woolf with the oliver nelson orch are a couple of tunes from which albums im not sure.
he used to have a club here in the san fernando valley. i went once and saw him there and it was a great experience up close.
if you can find a 'best of' release that would get you started.
......regards.....tr
For his older stuff, you may want to look atSL

a compilation titled "Standards” on Blue Note CDP-21282; SBM remaster,
which is part tracks from On the Sunny Side album, and part unreleased material. It is more in the ballad vein, very solid and intricate work from Smith on the Hammond, and nice interplay with Kenny Burrell on the guitar.

Jimmy Smith, in my book, has to be the funkiest man alive. He just happens to have amazing jazz skills and vocab!

Saw him live recently at Yoshi's in Oakland. Best Show I ever went to.

My fav JS albums are as follow:

Back at the Chicken Shack
The Sermon
The Organ Grinder's Swing(New Verve Master Edition)
Dynamic Duo (wWes Montgomery)
Root Down(70's funk, "Rootdown" was sampled by the Beasties)
