| Richie Hawtin - Decks EFX & 909. Anybody heard it? | chrisnz May 14, 2001 2:01 AM | | I got Richie Hawtin - Selections 1990-2000 at the weekend and really like it. Now I'd like to get DecksFX&909 but it costs an arm and a leg so I was wondering if anybody had heard it and could give me some info? Dusty?

| I gave it a listen in the store... | cc May 14, 2001 4:12 PM | | Hi Chris. It is presented as a continuous set, though I'm never sure whether we're supposed to believe that or what difference it makes. I didn't end up buying it but I might later on... he uses the one Plastikman (er, Richie Hawtin) record I have (Orange/Minus) for a few tracks. It is a very minimal beat and kind of serves as the backing track against some other stuff--pretty cool to hear when you're familiar with the original. Also, he uses several Jeff Mills records in the set, who I've been telling you about, so that's another plus. Definitely an interesting release but I honestly can't say whether or not to recommend it--the one you got may be superior. Did he make the "selections" for that one? Is it all very minimal? |
| Excellent... | chrisnz May 14, 2001 11:37 PM | | Thanks cc, here's what's on my album :-
Fuse - A New Day
Fuse - FU2
Plastikman - Krakpot
Circuit Breaker - Overkill
Plastikman - Are Friends Electrik
Fuse - Siac
Fuse - Substance Abuse
Plastikman - Spastik
Richie Hawtin - Minus:Orange
Fuse vs LFO - Loop
From the various pseudonym's Plastikman is the most minimal (Spastik is almost purely robot percussion and would probably have Yech bleeding from every orifice in seconds ;-) The Fuse stuff is more at the listening end, "A New Day" is a great track. The album Dimension Intrusion by Fuse might be worth checking out.
Seeing as Decks EFX and 909 also has some Jeff Mills on there I think I'll spring for it. I'm kind of intrigued as to what he's done with the Drum Machine and effects mixed up with a DJ set. According to AMG he sometimes has up to four tracks playing at once! Wild.
Cheers, Chris. |
| I have it and like it! | The Rgoue May 15, 2001 2:28 PM | | I "saw" him play at a rave a few years ago in a pitch-black room for 3 hours or so. This was a great rave with AUTECHRE also playing LIVE! I even passed them a joint while they were playing!
In the state I was in it all sounded god-sent!
