| METROPOLIS 2000 - DVD - DREAM THEATER | MasterCylinder May 14, 2001 8:05 AM | | Found this DVD at Best Buy Saturday. After raving over the CD for weeks, I could not wait to get home and see these guys actually play this outstanding form of prog.
The performance will not disappoint you.
However, I was not impressed to discover that this DVD is not recorded in 5.1 Dolby; you get straight stereo or Pro-Logic only.
In addition, the recording level is very low. Thus, you have to push your amp to enjoy the music.
Once I got over those annoyances, the DVD is enjoyable. Dream Theater is 5 amazingly capable musicians. "Metropolis 2000" is performed (almost flawlessly) from start to finish. Bonus materials include the medley "A Change of Seasons" performed at the same concert - and - just as good as the others.
Three of Dream Theater's members found each other in 1985 at the prestigious Berklee college of Music (Boston) and discovered that the were all raised near Long Island. Drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist John Myung and guitarist John Petrucci all play like they are formally educated and they also have a taste for the street music; it proves to be a good combination. These guys (all three) are monsters on their instruments. They are proficient - an understatement.
In addition, Jordan Rudess (keyboards) has the talent to keep up.
I recommend this DVD, even without the 5.1 Dolby. |
