Looking for bluegrass suggestions, please help...dmb_fan
May 14, 2001 2:21 PM
I am just starting to get interested in blue grass music. I am a Dead fan and started exploring bluegrass when I discovered Jerry Garcia's work with Old and In the Way. And then a month ago, a friend gave me Dolly Parton's "The Grass is Blue."

I am HOOKED!!! With Old and In the Way, I learned that I love kicka$$ footstomping banjo/mandolin/fiddle music. Now with Dolly's album I realize just how great this music can be with a truly extraordinary singer. Where do I go from here?

I have been getting more into bluegrass myself and have a few releases from these bands. Almost anything Alison Kraus does is good high quality stuff (recorded very well). Look for her last album with Union Station, which has So Long So Wrong on it (that might be the album title too). Alison has an exquisite voice.

Steve Earle did an album a few years ago with the traditional bluegrass band Del McCoury which is great, as well as their own album called The Mountain. Del is an older picker and he has 2 sons in the band as well as 2 other guys. They play that traditional bluegrass all huddled around one big mike, taking turns stepping up depending on what instrument is being featured. Its a hoot to watch.

The Steve Earle with Del McCoury Band record is The Mountain, and the just Del McCoury Band cd I have is called The Family.

That Alison Kraus cd is So Long So Wrong and it won best Bluegrass album Grammy a few years ago.

I've also just gotten into bluegrass after listening to "Old and in the Way". Alison Kraus is excellent. I'd recommend a 9 CD set "25 Years of Rounder Records". It's got some real gems. I guess I'll have to check out Dolly's album. Steve Earle rules, but he sounds more county to me.
You should try some of the older selections.....BM

Both of the Circle be Unbroken albums hosted by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band would be a must, they are joined by a large gathering of Bluegrass greats...and some country stars doing bluegrass. For a good instrumental try Strictly Instrumental by Flatts and Scruggs with Doc Watson really great picking fiddle and Dobro......a good album also is Michele Shocked Arkansas Traveler kind of a novelty she started out as a Punk Rocker....however she is multi-talented just a few suggestions....I play a little guitar and banjo myself, not played any lately, need to get back into it...have fun picking and grining......

I will definitely look into these recordings. Do you know if any of them can be found in a high-quality recording or remaster?

If not, do you know of any great albums that are recorded really well?

of audiophile quality produced by Randy Scruggs, Earl`s son, both perform on the album. There are 20 tracks and each one is a real jewel if you only get one more Bluegrass album, this would be it...... miked and mixed to perfection. I`ve used this one over the years to test new equipment and cables because the subtle way it was recorded, almost like each cut was a studio practice session, and the audio engineer fades in and out of tracks very nice indeed, after all these years this is still my favorite, never gets tiring.

Alison Krauss is an excelent introduction. Traditional, but with a bit of a fresh twist. Del McCoury is a good traditionl blugrass band. You should also try the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Others worth checking out are J.D. Crowe, Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Peter Rowan. I'll also throw in Dry Branch Fire Squad. I'm not familiar with their studio recordings. I don't know if those can do justice to the band, but the Live cd is a lot of fun. I saw them live and when I saw they had a live cd, I snatched it up right away.

Someone else that is a lot of fun and a great player is Mike Cross.

An intersting group with some damn fine players is the New Grass Revival. They had a few personnel changes early on, but most productive line up was, Pat Flynn, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and John Cowan.

Not quite bluegrass, but close, is Robin and Linda Williams. They have several excellent cds.

Can't believe no mention of Bill Monroe...DOM

I believe he is generally regarded as the father of bluegrass music and has inspired most of the modern artists who are trying to rejuvenate the genre e.g. Skaggs, Krauss, Earle et al

Also wrote /performed what is probably the most widely recognized bluegrass song 'Blue Moon of Kentucky'.

Here is a quote from AMG artist profile:

"Bill Monroe is the father of bluegrass. He invented the style, invented the name and, for the great majority of the 20th century,
embodied the art form."

I would also guess it's not a coincidence that Monroe was from Kentucky and named his musical style "bluegrass".

Nickel Creek is a young bluegrass group (teens to early twenties). I like them. They have a song on country radio right now called "The Lighthouse." (I think that's the name.)
