Bands like Priest, Sabbath, Michael Schenker Group, Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Loudness, Queensryche, Scorpions, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Zebra, Dokken, Van Halen, Bad Company, Led Zep, Queen, UFO, Yngwie Malmsteen, Def Leppard, Ratt, Satriani, Steve Vai, Tony McAlpine, Rush, Triumph, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Accept, Thin Lizzy, Skid Row, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, etc. etc. etc. Now THOSE bands played with melody, chops, gusto, spirit, talent! 'Tool' should go to musical school and learn something from these REAL hard rock/metal bands that can actually write a real SONG and carry a MELODY!!! |

May 15, 2001 12:59 PM | | I'll give you some of those bands, yes classic. No doubt. AC/DC, Sabbath, Queensryche, sure. Rock n' Roll. Saw AC/DC last Fall. Great concert. Several of the bands you listed are among my favorites. I used to worship Maiden. But Tool aren't trying to be those bands. They're doing something new and different. Just because you don't "get it" - don't knock 'em. Not all music has to sound like Bad Company to be worthy. Besides, it's obvious you're just here to rattle canges. We're adults here, go hop in your GTO and go back to school, or not if you've already dropped out. Oh yea, that mullet needs trimming, better get to the barber.

May 15, 2001 4:25 PM | | ...posing as the real thing... as something meaningful and talented, when all it is is odd meter progressions of noise and retarded, disjointed samples of sound effects used to mask their obvious lack of talent, and to fool those that think there is substance (read: puny minds)! Tool sounds like Mongol FARTING into a mic! I'll give them this much... at least it is a DIGITAL, well recorded farting sound! Christ, it's amazing what passes as music these days! Even JOHN CAGE's silent passages sounded BETTER than Tool's drivel! At least John Cage's admirers were mostly music appreciation fans and students of music in general, who KNEW something about music, whereas many Tool fans are angst ridden, pimply, loser followers and sheep that fall for any combination of angry ramblings and odd metered chords that are supposed to be 'cool', because peer pressure and those record companies says it is! I'll take 'Wok and Woll Kwazy Nights' ANY DAY over 'ENEMA', er I mean 'AENIMA' and the new one that sucks even more! At least Akira and Minoru had talent and could carry a substantive song! And that accent was so international and exquisite to boot!!! I really tried to like 'Aenima', and played it at least 4 times, but the more I listened, the more it it sucked raw! I am not against unbridled creativity, but create something of substance, not sonic garbage. Tool, is, to me, sonic refuse and waste, period! |

What does irk me is you saying they have no talent just because you don't like them. They have tremendous talent in every regard: interesting and complex song writing, one of the best singers in metal ever, a distinctive guitar sound, a great bassist and absolutely superb drummer, intelligent (though dark) lyrics, and one of the few metal bands that care about high fidelity. Hey, I hate Twisted Sister (for example), but even I have to admit they had some talent. I'm 33, not a brain washed college kid. I like most of the stuff on your list. It's just that I got sick of many of those bands by 14 or so. Just out of curiosity, do you think Queensryche's "Screaming in Digital" sucks? "Lateralus" was just released today so you haven't listened to it, yet you say is sucks. Hmmm...you're the one who needs to grow up. |

No, really, that was pretty funny -- you actually got some credit there by even knowing who Cage is, but then you ruined it by insisting that taste has anything to do with brains. To each his own, you know? For example, my opinion is that you would probably look good in a mullet (hey, where did all this mullet-hating come from? I sport a mullet sometimes) ... but you should probably where platform shoes, so you can see what's going on at the next Cinderella concert, rather than being beaten down by those frat-boy drunks ...
