Inspired by KTROY...Cosmic Messenger
Aug 23, 2001 7:44 PM
Having just bought a tube amp; and just reading Troy's post regarding alcohol & a domestic music jam, I decided it was time to boil some serious atoms off the cathodes of my new output tubes.

Here's the track list of the music that broke in the new gear:

1: Led Zeppelin> Black Dog The ultimate LZ experience; perhaps only equalled by Good Times Bad Times IMO.

2: Comfort Me, I Want Freedom, I Can Feel Him In the Morning by Grand Funk Rail Road of their sublime, yet unappreciated album Survivor. GFR at their level best with a bass player who is perhaps one of rock's most underrated musicians.

3: Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young

4: Just Got Paid Today & Jesus Just Left Chicago by ZZ Top; when they were good!

5: Ramble Tamble by CCR; first time I made out with a chick was with this playin' in the back ground.

6: Post Toastee by Tommy Bolin; this will blow yer woofers fer sure!

7: A few Cactus tunes off their incredible album called: One Way or Another. Goddam! These guys ROCK! Is it Savoy Brown alumni w/ Bogart & Appice on bass & drums? Whoa; WAY too hot!

8: Batuka, No One to Depend On & Tousant L'Overture off Santana's incredible 3rd album.

I am going to cap this evening off with the movie; Enemy at the Gates.

Am I old or what? New music just doesn't do it for me like the forgoing... Why is that? New music just doesn't sound as genuine. Is it contrived, formulaic, derivitive or what? Let's hear it guys...

I look forward to being torn apart & blown up by those on this board who belong to the Self Appointed Society of Music Snobs (SOSAMS). A badge of honor I wear proudly ;).

Truly,

CM

You're old. Geezin'. Plenty of good music still being produced, just not being pushed by the record exec's, so you gotta look a little harder. Check the two I's -- imports and indies -- plenty there. Not going to tear you apart, just answering your question.

This service cheerfully provided by the East-coast branch of the SOSAMS.
seems like your music selection is more geared towrd ssRPM

I always invision stuff like jazz/vocal based music/classical or folk being played thru tube equipment and heavier more dynamic stuff like rock/electrionic or blues on solid state. Be nice to have the option wouldn't it?

So, how did the noo toobs sound? Didn't blow anything up did you?? ;-)

Rick,

You bring up an interesting point... last night I realized that I was listeneng to this old dyno-rock being played back through equipment similar to what the musicians would have originally used. Tube amplification driving large super efficient speakers. In my case, the EL84 output tubes in my amp were, and probably still are, widely used in guitar amps and my speakers are a 102db w/1 watt efficient JBL design in custom cabinets. Last night'smusic set truly sounded like the real McCoy.

I had the same perception of tube amps that you did, much to my suprise they can really rock out & boogie. The solid state amps I've had sound restrained by comparison. Just my 2 cents though... I don't mean to start a tubes vs solid state debate.

I've actually got a pretty nice LP collection of classic rock in pristine condition. And I am keeping my eyes peeled for a used Technics SL-10 (& I'm still kicking myself for selling the SL-10 I used to own.)

Perhaps I'll find one someday. Then I can join the ranks of the upper echelon music snobs... har de har.

But as I'm sure you are aware; it was recently established that my taste in things SUCKS! unequivocally. There's really no doubt about it.

Glad you had a good time on my account.

There is plenty of good new (or newer anyway) music floating around. Something for everyone. Didn't you totally fall for that Bartz stuff? That's pretty new, and it sure is WAY different than the stuff on this list.

My post was proof positive that one should not post while drunk ;)

And your right, Bartz is one good example of new stuff that I really like. Still, by & large, it's the old stuff that seems to speak to my rock & roll soul.

BTW, I know you like Esquiville & Les Baxter, have you heard Robert Drasnin's album called Voodoo? It's a superb example of 50s exotica.

He created the soundtrack for the Twilight Zone & Man from Uncle TV shows.

When Martin Denny's album went racing up the charts (in the late 50s) Robert Drasnin was commissioned by a now defunt record company to "Do something like Denny's album."

What he made eclipsed anything Martin Denny ever did by a mile.

It's now available on CD, but the master of the CD was an LP, thankfully the LP was in pretty good condition!

You can check out sounds samples at Tower.com etc.
