| If you were to recommend one album that I should buy today | Darius Aug 24, 2001 8:42 AM | | what would it be? (This will be easier for those regulars who have an idea of my tastes and what I already own.) Just looking for a couple new ideas as I'm probably stopping by at the record store on the way home today. Thanks in advance for what I'm sure will be some good suggestions. |
| As long as you still don't mind gay satan-worshippers,... | Zoltan61 Aug 24, 2001 9:06 AM | | ...I'll think about it. BTW, I envy you: you can spend the company-time with looking at this message-board at work!?!?!? I wish I could do that!
Good luck with your selection(s)! |
| Unwound, or maybe ... | dbi Aug 24, 2001 9:35 AM | | As a Sonic Youth fan, I think you would really like Unwound Leaves Turn Inside You and would probably appreciate why The Wire rated it near perfect with comments like "Marks a radical departure in its scope and overall sound.... Unwound have reinvented their music as Progressive hardcore, framing abstract conceits in rock solid structures. This brave, ambitious record retains its edge in a blur of invention." Its a double CD in a nice 4-panel digipak, although I think it was done more to preserve the commonality between the LP and CD versions since the combined playing time of the two discs is a little under 80 minutes and could probably have been squeezed onto one which is usually a mistake IMO. Originally recommended highly on the board by Whooptee, who must have very good taste indeed since we so often agree :-) I included a track on my recent Half Gone comp but haven't heard any feedback. It's probably one of the most highly rated albums of the year I would think.
A few of us were just talking about Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire The Swimming Hour which is another of my recent favorites which has also garnered much critical acclaim and was also represented on the Half Gone comp. There are a couple good reviews posted in that thread and if you do a search on Andrew Bird here at Rave Recs, some other comments will surface.
If you haven't had much exposure to traditional West African acoustic pop music, I would highly recommend the new Baaba Maal Missing You (Mi Yeewnii) which was recorded with long time guitarist and collaborator Mansour Seck in Nbunk, Senegal with John Leckie aiding in production. It's a beautiful album, very rich in texture and color and the emotion is apparent even without understanding the lyrics.
In honor of the new Stereolab album due out next week, I'll recommend one of my favorites of the 90s, the wonderful Emperor Tomato Ketchup from 1996. Kind of their transition from the more angular post-rock sound to a more lush and orchestrated pop band but still quirky and full of surprises and beautiful production throughout with John McEntire (Tortoise) at the helm.

| Fishbone, The Psychotic Friends Nutwurx | Azuth Aug 24, 2001 9:40 AM | | Its a funky rock band with horns and some great songwriting on this particular album. The recording quality is amazing. Its nothing like Fishbone's older ska style albums. Its just a fun CD.
Some [not so great] clips here:
