Anyone else sick of Sarah McLachlan???ardee
Aug 25, 2001 12:53 AM
Okay, its like this, her last TWO albums have been remasters and bsides. WTF, come on we are sick of your whinny, sad songs. Not only do you subject us to albums that contain one catchy up-tempo song, thus tricking us into buying the whole thing - only to be depressed after one listening, you continue to milk what fans you have left by releasing NO new material for 3 years, YET two new albums??!! Sarah, darling, you are not pink floyd, they may be able to keep re-releasing the same material over and over without scrutiny, but you? no i am afraid no-one cares anymore. sorry thats just my 2c.
Me too, kinda#LB

I loved her first album, but yeah, she got a little long in the tooth after that. Just like Tori Amos and Alanis Morriset. Where have all the female artists gone? they don't seem to have staying power; unless of course you're talking Ann & Nancy Wilson, who contributed there writing to the fake band Stillwater, from the movie Almost Famous. Annie Lennox is still making pertinent music. The only time you hear of McLaughlin, Morriset, or Amos is at the Lez Fair concerts.
Where Have All The Female Artists Gone?Mary

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. No Staying Power???? Let's see...

Bonnie Raitt
Trisha Yearwood
K.D. Lang
Alison Krauss
Christine McVie
Sheryl Crow
Stevie Nicks
Nanci Griffith
Emmylou Harris
Lucinda Williams
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Patricia Barber
Diana Krall
Meredith Brooks
Melissa Etheridge
Joni Mitchell
Margo Timmons & The Cowboy Junkies
Rickie Lee Jones
Cassandra Wilson
Holly Cole
Sarah Harmer
etc
etc
etc

These are only a handful of artists
that come to mind, most of whom have
a new album out or forthcoming, and
have been in the business 10 years or
more. Heck, Raitt, Lang, Krauss, McVie,
Nicks, Griffith, Harris, Mitchell &
Jones have been in the business for 25
years or longer. And, please don't
disrespect these artists by labeling
them as "mainstream."

I'm just playing! Seriously though of that list, and the ones I know, only Lucinda Williams and that Cowboy Junkies gal hold any promise at all. 'course that's just me. Jazz and cowgirls don't really do it for me. BTW, it wouldn't make a lick of difference to me if those were men's names you posted. It's the music I don't like. I take that back, there are a few names up there that I just don't think I care for regardless of the music.

My really hip, ultra cool list would include some stuff like:

PJ Harvey-(Thanks KKS)
Miho Hatori-Cibo Mato(thanks DBI)
Kristia Jeanne Sheffield (thanks snowbunny)
Sinead-always seems fresh to me but I can see why people hate her.
Le Tigre- an all girl trio led by Kathleen Hanna (thanks Rae)
Allison Moyet-although I'm not following so there may not be anything new there?

Vive Le Rock

I was mainly referring to Rock N' Roll#LB
Aug 27, 2001 7:52 AM
Most of the acts you named are from another generation, not this one. And most of the acts you named haven't put out anything substenative and have been reduced to adult contemporary fodder. They wouldn't be mainstream unless anyone could actually name the last new song they heard of these artists. I agree that Sheryl Crow is still a viable force in Rock N' Roll, and Yearwood is a force in C&W, but that's not saying a whole helluva lot, considering the glut of Shania Twain/Faith Hill wannabes.
Hmmmmmmm....Mary

Nancy and Ann Wilson, as well as Annie Lennox -- per your previous post -- are of this generation??? Please enlighten me.

Is this post an attempt at a troll? If so, you failed miserably.

Been here too long , don't need to troll#LB

My point was that there didn't seem to be any female artists from this generation that will stand the test of time, like the Wilsons, Lennox, Nicks, Mitchell, Raytt, etc, and others on your list. I was lumping McLaughlin in the catergory of this generation, suggesting that she hasn't remained relevant. Some of the artists on your list continue to come out with relevant material, while some have not. This is of course, MHO. It may differ with yours, but then again, I wasn't responding to your post, you responded to mine. Its ok to disagree, really. (no...really) Doesn't make either of us a troll. No need responding so emotionally and start name calling.
so look elsewhere! for new..........snow_san

you both obviously have no idea the number of great female artists out there simply b/c you don't take any time at all to search for them...your stuck w/ whats mainstream...i'll recommend a number of them and would be impressed if you recognize 2 or 3...

small note before i go on...i would assume you both realize they did release SARAH MCLACHLAN-"remixed" ....so there's your thump for you...should be nothing sappy about that...i personally don't have it myself...i just want to find one at a steal...plus...w/ SO MANY other female artists out there waiting to be listened to....anyway...go out and get these and stop the whining...

ANTONELLA RUGGIERO-"sospesa"
FILIPPA GIORDANO-self titled & "passioni"
EMMA SHAPPLIN-"carmine meo"
EMER KENNY-"fades into day"
ELIZA MCARTHY-"angels and cigaretts"
BETH ORTON-"trailer park"
OFRA HAZA-"self titled"
SARAH BRIGHTMAN-"fly" or go w/ best of she just released...(maybe just import...amazon.uk)
CAROLINE LAVELLE-"spirit"
PIA-"benediction moon" and "magical eclipse"
ANNA MARIA JOPEK
ATYLANTOS
POE-"haunted"
GOLDFRAPP-"felt mountain"
HELENE SEGARA-"au d'une femme"
ARIELLE DOMBASLE-"liberta"
MANDALAY-"solace"
MYLENE FARMER
ENYA
LOREENA MCKEENIT-"book of secrets"

SO LOOK! stop listening to radio trash/mtv in thinking thats all the music out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so look elsewhere! for new..........ardee

Aug 25, 2001 9:49 PM
wow, i didnt say the female genre is getting tired i said SARAH WAS!!! regardless of your bountiful knowledge of female musicians it is pointless to argue when you are the only one arguing. THe girls bands/solo acts i mentioned are great performors regarless if they are mainstream, BTW fiona apple, esthero, portishead are mainstream?? dont think so. thanks for trying tho. OH ya i made a mistake in my original post , REMASTERS was supposed to say RE=Mixes.
get away from mainstream!!!snow_san
Aug 25, 2001 10:32 PM
when i say mainstream...i'm meaning who hasn't heard of them...

i don't mean their played on the radio or whatever shit else you might think of...

give me a break...

and arguing about what? its tiring listening to whiners like you! sarah's not tired ...you are!

how/why/what/where/when out of the blue do you even come up w/ your stupid comment in the first place about her?!...has she been in the news lately or something that you bring her name up???

throw your next comments at me...lets get into an agument!!!i'm getting pumped now...don't whine out either!
Oh, please!Darius
Aug 26, 2001 10:30 AM
This mainstream bashing sickens me; it's just stupid. Who cares whether it's mainstream or not!?! I'm looking for intelligent, fresh, music that doesn't bore me. Madonna's "Music" or Bjork's "Homogenic" album fits the bill I'm sure a lot better than some obscure second rate New Age crooner picked up by the audiophile labels that you might recommend. Believe me, I listen to less popular, indie label music as much as, or more than, the next guy/gal, but that's because I'm looking for interesting music that doesn't play to the lowest common denominator. But I'll take that kind of quality wherever I can find it, and in whatever genre (including dance pop, r&b, rap, heavy metal, country), and if it's coming from a popular artist, that's all the better, because it means that I can have more faith that justice exists somewhere in this world. I'm certainly going to discount any recommendations for music I haven't heard from someone who has this parochial and simplistic attitude that mainstream is bad and obscure is good, so believe me your suggestions below in response to a thread I started on Friday looking for new music will be ignored out of hand; thanks anyway.
thats all you know!!!snow_san
Aug 26, 2001 10:57 AM
oh please yourself you fU%k@n idiot! another whiner!

i bet your just lovin that nsync & britany cd you've been spinning over and over huh! c'mon...we've got to spread this great music to more and more of the people in this world. we want them to stay w/ us until we die right!

quality...your kidding right...people in the limelight are basically just in the right place at the right time...very few have talent...

talent is an artist/band thats been around for 20yrs and still rocking...i give those respect...

i've nothing against madonna/bjork...i just don't really see buying any of their stuff when you can hear it all free a million times on the radio or where ever else...
I'm the idiot?Darius
Aug 26, 2001 11:27 AM
Well, I don't claim to be a genius, but at least I can spell and use punctuation. Please go away. Or rather, don't go away; do what you please. But I'm going to ignore your posts from now on because it's more than clear now that they will have nothing worthwhile to offer me.
