| Janes Addiction, Nothings Shocking on vinyl - you want it? | maf Aug 27, 2001 11:29 AM | | I bought this album last week and was THINKING ABOUT offering it to someone here who might be interested, as I found it a little too heavy for my tastes.
So today CDNow emails me saying they shipped this album (with Grandaddy - Software Slump and R.E.M. - Automatic for the People), from a long-forgotten order I placed in May. So now I have 2-copies of an album I don't seem to care for, though I will give it a few more spins before passing final judgement.
So anyone interested in a vinyl copy of this, apparently, very important album? Acording to AMG: " Nothing's Shocking is a must-have for lovers of cutting-edge, influential, and timeless hard rock." I guess, maybe that's not me. Oh well!
No trade required - email me if interested.

| Thanks, I already have a copy and ... | dbi Aug 27, 2001 11:53 AM | | a lot of it is dominated by heavy metal type guitar but some of it is also soft and gentle which is one of the main attractions, at least for me. It's almost majestic at times with the high pitched vocals and soaring guitars that scream out for high volume listening. But there's also that gentle side. Have you listened much to Summertime Rolls yet? Or Mountain song and especially the witty and intelligent Jane Says with the acoustic guitars and steel drums? I don't really think of it as the masterpiece that some critics and fans elevate it too but I do like it a lot (although I admittedly don't listen to much harder edged rock these days either).

| My turn to be disappointed. | Stone Aug 27, 2001 12:10 PM | | Not a masterpiece huh? I'm sorry you feel that way. Nothing's Shocking is one of my all time favorite albums. To wit:
Stone "Take the Challenge...Your Top 10 All-Time Albums!" 8/8/01 11:07am
The guitar blast, vocals, lyrics, and emotion (both the metal intensity and the softer sensitivity), not to mention the horns in "Idiots Rule," still just suck me in, even today after 100s of listens.

I could probably pick a couple others from your list that I don't think are masterpieces as well :-)
I'm about 15 years older than you I think so we grew up in different times, listening to different music. I'm sure there are many albums from the 70s that I revere which you probably don't really understand the appeal of. I think it was Masonjar (who I think has similar tastes in modern music to both of us and like you, grew up in the 80s) who recently said he didn't "get" Bowie and Talking Heads, two of my all time favorites with many masterpieces to their names. But I did say that I like Nothing's Shocking a lot. I haven't listened to it 100s of times though :-)

| You're THAT old??? | Stone Aug 27, 2001 3:25 PM | | He he. You know I'm 31, right?
I think you're right about the differences in the time frame in which we grew up (everyone for that matter). I am a Bowie fan and a Talking Heads fan, but neither am I fanatic about. Much of my collection is dominated by 80s music.
Also, just for the record, I wouldn't call every album on my list a masterpiece (e.g. The Misfits) - some have a strong appeal just because of the energy or for sentimental reasons.

| Thanks, I already have a copy and ... | maf Aug 27, 2001 12:27 PM | | I've only spun it once and my first impression was that it is dangerously close to heavy metal. It was during this initial spin that I thought to myself, maybe should offer it up to someone more appreciative of this style. Now that I have a second copy on the way, it's a no-brainer. Anyway, I will give it a few more spins, especially after the ringing endorsement from Stone and AMG as well as your slightly less than ringing but still pretty darn compelling endorsement. Offer still stands for those vinyl ready head bangers out there.

| re: Janes Addiction, Nothings Shocking on vinyl - you want it? | Jason Brown Aug 27, 2001 4:38 PM | | Oh, man! What a great album! I have nearly 900 CDs, and I never go too long without spinning that one. A textural materpiece if you ask me (which you didn't).
I too have given away copies of "Nothing's Shocking". But for different reasons. It's hard for me to imagine what it's like to not like it.
I guess the reason this particular album made such an impact on me is because at the time of its release, heavy music had saturated the mainstream and became a watered-down parody of itself. NS came along, and kicked everybody's ass, giving me hope for the future of heavy music. A veritable classic, I say! |
| Now comes the hard part | maf Aug 28, 2001 12:24 PM | | I have been inundated with upwards of 2 (3 to be exact) emails requesting this fine album. Oh how will I decide....
If each of you who has emailed me would compose a 1000 word essay on why you think you should receive this album....nah.
I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10...nah.
I guess I'll just put your names in a hat and the lucky one will get
nice little surprise in the next week or so. The draw will take place at midnight EST tonite, so if you're interested and haven't emailed yet you still have time to get your entry in. Good luck to all the participants.

| Tell you what.... | Stone Aug 28, 2001 12:44 PM | | I have it on CD so I can listen to it when I want. I would like to have it on vinyl, but if there's someone out there who doesn't have it at all and can enjoy it immediately, I'd rather it went to them. Maybe this can make things easier for you.

| Good try Stone.... | maf Aug 28, 2001 1:43 PM | | But I believe all three who emailed me already have it on CD. Very magnanimous though.
