What do you mix with Swish? Volume 2Snowbunny

I liked Swish Mix Volume 1 well enough, although as a whole, it went in a direction that I don't normally travel. So I figured that Volume 2 would have the same intermittent appeal that "The Brits" Volume 1 had for me. I was surprised to hear a decidedly "alt-country" flavour to the Mix. (You have permission to flog me, Paul, if that wasn't your intent.)

Grant Lee Buffalo - Testimony

Beautiful voice, beautiful song, beautiful lyrics. I'll definitely check out Jubilee.

Jason Falkner - I Already Know

Stand out song on the comp for me, Paul. What a touching song! I love the way it starts out as a gentle ballad and gradually increases in tempo and and volume as the guitars kick in and the Jason's voice lowers a few octaves. Fabulous song! Tell me something I don't already know - about Jason Falkner.

And nice segue to the charming little song by

Martin Sexton - Hallelujah!

I love the comical lyrics in this song and I like it more everytime I hear it. Very catchy in a indie kind of way. (I have no idea what that means!) I got one of my favorite little lyrical bites from this one - One ounce of action beats a ton of words.

Sloan - Long Time Coming

I should like these Canadian boys, but all I can say is this song is actually pretty good. :-)

Eels - Not Ready Yet

I love the Eels. I bought "beautiful freak" after hearing one of the songs on a comp by dbi, and I really enjoy their unusual song lyrics and experimental vocal recordings.

one day the world will be ready for you and wonder how they didn't see
(from beautiful freak)

Morphine - Candy

This song surprised me by growing on me after I initially couldn't stand it. Kind of throws me off when the muted horn section kicks in, but probably will end up being one of my favourites. Not at all what I expected Morphine to sound like. Not hard at all.

Tragically Hip - Bob Caygeon

YES! This is one of my all-time favourite Hip songs! Not for the faint of heart, however. You are a man of exceptional taste, Paul! Bob Caygeon is a small town in Ontario, and someday its my intention to actually meet someone who lives there.

Cassandra Wilson - Tupelo Honey

Gorgeous song! Torch song extrodinaire! Only complaint I have is that is was very hard for me to settle down for this song after the Hip and Pavement. I'll be searching out Blue Light Til Dawn.

I like the way this collection flowed from alt-countryish to rock to more laid back tempo of the final four tracks.

The only tracks that I personally would pass on are Velvet Crush - Time Wraps Around You (I would have ended it with Honeydogs - Pins In Dolls - great song) and I didn't like the Guided By Voices track. I've been wanting to hear more by them, but if you think that's a good representation of their sound, I'm not so sure I will. What do you think? Also could have missed out on the World Party - Take It Up. Hope those weren't your favourite tracks. :-)

Over all excellent sounds on Volume 2. I've found at least three new artists whose CD's I'm going looking for.

job of it too. I would seriously suggest you check out Goodbye Jumbo, the World Party record that "Take It Up" comes from. It's a considered a classic in many circles, and it has many fans on this board. I know you'll find several songs on it that you'd like. If you can't find it, I can make you a copy (I sent one to dbi when he couldn't find it). I used that to set my "tone" for the comp.I especially love the Hammond B3 organ that comes in at the end of the track.

As for the GBV tune " The Official Ironmen's Rally Song", it is one of my favorites by them, so I'm disappointed you don't like it. When the bass kicks in I just lose it. I don't think it's representative of their style on their earlier records, which were very lo-fi, with some songs ending abruptly and after only 30 seconds or so. Their latest discs are more similar to this track, with less distorted guitars, cleaner production, and songs of traditional length. They have a tremendous sense of melody, even on some of their very short songs, and I consider melody above all else. Yes, I love this band.
Don't forget that I liked 90% of the songs, Swish!Snowbunny

I listened to Cassandra Williams at lunch today, and I would have thought she was a blues singer. I didn't buy it as I fear it might be a little "jazzy" for my taste, but I'm starting to see the line between Jazz and Blues is pretty thin.

What GBV's album would you suggest I start with? And what category would Jason Faulkner be found in? Is he still actively recording? Oh yeah! Also, listened to Martin Sexton - Wonderbar, and its going on my wishlist. I'm a little confused between Charlie Sexton, Ron Sexsmith and Martin Sexton...
