Pink Floyd's The Wall: Fantastic SoundZeppaholic

I have nearly all of PF's albums, and I've deliberately put purchasing The Wall off for quite some time. I'm not that big of a fan of the album, and while some songs are good, the whole album just sounds all over the place to make it that enjoyable of a listen. However, a few weeks ago I picked up the remastered version of The Wall, and the sound quality of it BLEW ME AWAY. Not only did the sound blow away the other PF remastering jobs, but all other remastered albums from the 60's to 70's era. The sound is just so clear, and the soundscape that is created in incredible, whether listening through headphones, or my speakers.

Doug Sax did one hell of a job cleaning and polishing this puppy up. It's only a shame Meddle remastered doesn't sound this good.

Anybody here come across a wonderful remastering job of a classic band lately?

I have the Mobile Fidelity remaster of The Wall. I found a beat up copy in a used CD shop. It has a very warm sound.

As far as other good sounding remasters of classic bands, I recently picked up some of the Lynyrd Skynyrd catalogue. Considering the age of the tapes and the archaic recording technology of the time, these remasters sound pretty good to my ears. The titles in question are Pronounced, Street Survivors and Second Helping.

Also, though not technically a remaster, Ambrosia's Somewhere I've Never Travelled sounds pretty good on CD (finally!).

Other classic band remasters I picked up this year include the following:
1) Judas Priest/Stained Class, Hell Bent For Leather, British Steel, and Screaming For Vengeance
2) Kansas/Masque and Leftoverture
3) Kiss/Destroyer
4) Love/Forever Changes
5) The Zombies/Odyssey and Oracle
6) Ted Nugent/Ted Nugent
7) David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Let's Dance, and Station To Station (the RCA remasters)

The sound quality of these remasters ranges from pretty good (The Zombies, Bowie and Kansas) to mediocre (Ted Nugent). Sometimes you can't quite make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I've heard that Jon Astley, the guy who did some of the Judas Preist remasetering job really went gung ho with the No Noise, which totally sucked the life right out of the recording.

Anybody here know about the Cream remasters? I have the Best of remaster, released a few years ago, and it sounds very flat and weak, however some songs sound better than others.

Some of the Led Zeppelin remasters sound good, but it seems like Physical Graffiti, and Presence were botched up slightly. Houses of the Holy and Zeppelin II sound great to my ears though.

Some of the Who remasters leave much to be desired. However the bonus tracks on them make each one worth the money.

The Judas Priest remasters I have (Stained Class, British Steel, Hell Bent For Leather, and Screaming For Vengeance) sound OK to me. Still, none of these are sonic showpieces. The overall presentation is somewhat bright and forward. As to whether no noise, choices of equalization during mastering, the original mixes, or the technology of the time is to blame--who can say for sure? I have heard worse, and I have heard better.

As far as the Who remasters go, several of these were actually remixed. Here you come down to personal taste. What the mixer prefers may not jive with what some of the fans prefer. Again, I've heard worse...

The Zeppelin Cds are, for the most part, too bright and bass deficient. (Thank you Mr. Page.) I own the Mobile Fidelity half speed LP of Led Zeppelin II. A while back I borrowed a turntable from my favorite stereo shop and burned it onto a CDR. This LP also has some interesting equalization going on, but it is closer to my tastes. It is more full bodied if a bit too hot on top.
