My Top 5 of 20013-LockBox
Jan 2, 2002 11:11 AM
It was my first really deep plunge into the world of prog, though I did already have some of what's considered classic prog. Almost every purchase I made in 2001 was a recommendation from this board, and most were good ones. This is not a list comprised of only 2001 releases, nor is it a 'best of' list; just my two cents worth; a list of purchases of music that I'd never heard of till this year, whether it was released this year or not. Anyhoo...in no particular order...

Kansas:Masque - Probably in most of your collections already, but a new one for me. I considered myself a Kansas fan since the '80s, when I discovered Leftoverture and Point of Know Return on vinyl, then buying them on CD, then buying Leftoverture and Masque remastered. Masque was probably the first time I took a recommendation from this board seriously, and boy was I pleased. Masque is a masterpiece, and quite possibly my all around fave of 2001.

Spock's Beard:Kindness of Strangers - I now own three SB releases,(first, middle and last) but this one(middle) is the best of the bunch (IMO). The writing, performance, and singing is better than even their more recent efforts.

Roine Stolt:The Flower King - I have the group, The Flower Kings w/ Stolt, but this is still my favorite. This wasn't a purchase however. This was a give away by our own Jim Clark, who couldn't stand it. I musta been the only person who said yes, because it took him months to get rid of it. I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time.

ELO:A New World Record - Ok, so its not the first time for most of these songs, but the ones I hadn't heard are gems, and overall, a gem of an album from start to finish. I play the thing all the time and even my wife likes it. It was like, 'where has this album been all my life?'. Another reason why 'greatest hits' albums cheat both the band and the listener. I picked this up at a Sam Goody in the $4.99 bin.

XTC:Apple Venus vol II - Hey, a relatively recent release! I wasn't a big fan of volume one, I think its okay, but I'm not playing it a lot, like I do Vol II. I still think they miss the guitar playing of Dave Gregory, but this volume has more bite to it than the first, and IMHO, its their best work since Oranges & Lemons.

These are my faves, though thanks to this board, I enjoy a lot more than these.

and I thought I sent you an e-mail. Anyway, thanx, and if you don't mind, I plan to review a couple of them. All in all, I'm pleased and will definately be on the look out for some of these groups.
