Favorites of 2001: AR.com vs. WXPN (plus comp update)RPM

I was checking out my local college station today (WXPN, Philadelphia) and they posted their top 50 albums for 2001. Interesting how many of their favorites were also "our" favorites. Below is a link to their list:

Favorites of 2001 (disc 2) comp update:
Despite having 11 days off from work recently, I haven't made much progress on burning the second disc to "Fav's of 2001". But I have not forgotten the project. I made a preliminary sequence (scratched out on paper) which includes the remaining nominated songs plus several bonus tracks (selected from those who nominated & sent more than 1 song). So, when I eventually get a master copy done, disc 2 will likely contain more "air time" than disc 1.

thanks for the patience,
Rick
Yes, but with some glaring omissions! I guess it's stuff they've never heard. I'mSwish

How else do you account for the absence of Steve Wynn's "Here Come the Miracles", "The Swimming Hour" by Andrew Byrd's Bowl of Fire, and Ed Harcourt's "Here be Monsters"? I'm sure there are several others I'm forgetting, but I listen to XPN frequently and never heard these artists being played. They do have a nice list, but it's far from complete or accurate IMO. Maybe I should burn them a comp from these 3 and send it to 'em!HA!

NP: A flight out of Cleveland. :^)
They do have some suggestion type promosRPM

I've never done this, but I think they have some sort of listener submitted program where you submit an hours worth of songs and they'll play them at lunch time (or something like that). I always thought it would be cool to try, but I'm sure some of the stuff I like would not be in line with their programming.
Although some artists are conspicously absent from their playlist, overall XPN plays a wider variety of genres than any other single station I've ever listened to.

Swisher,

If you let me know some time in advance of one of your visits, maybe we can check out some live music in Cleveburgh...... ;)

in a couple months or so. I have 3 sales reps in the area and come out to spend some time with them. I'll make sure to give you plenty of notice. Just so you know, it would be a weekday since it's always business travel. I understand that plenty goes on in the warehouse district.

Thanks for the offer!

WXPN, Starsailor, and Disc 2 of 2001 Comp...BillB

First, as a Philly guy and XPN listener, the first thing I though of after the first 5 songs or so was, "Rick sounds like he's an XPN member!" It was a very good comp by the way.

Regarding Starsailor, the lead singer's name is James Walsh, he's about 20-21 yrs old and a REALLY cool, down-to-earth guy. I talked to him for about 5 minutes before their gig here in Philly at the North Star Bar. His voice is simply amazing and is just as good live as it is on record. They will be on David Letterman Monday night and the album will FINALLY get it's release here in the States on Tuesday. It's my favorite album of 2001 (it was released in the UK that year!) and I think they will have the same success Stateside as Coldplay and Travis, this album, IMO better than both "Paracutes" and "Good Feeling" respectively.

As for which song to put on the 2nd disc of 2001 comp Good Souls would appear the instant pick but it already gets loads of playtime on XPN and with the domestic release next week it will likely be the track picked up by commercial stations (MTV2's already playing the video for it.) I would like to see "Lullaby" (my favorite and the newest single in England) or "Tie Up My Hands" or even "Fever" or "Poor Misguided Fool" for that matter. So many good tracks on that album...I think I vote for "Lullaby."

Glad you're liking it.

Cheers!
BillB
Lullaby it will be then, thanks (NT)RPM
