Afro Celt Sound System Vol. 3 Further In TimeJim Clark
Jan 4, 2002 12:00 PM
Saw this in the used store yesterday and remembered that it made Rick's WXPN list of the 50 best (# 14). figured it had to be worth 6.99 so I picked it up. I already have vol 1 and 2 so in advance I'm predisposed to enjoying this stuff. Vol. 3 picks up where 2 ends.

"Further in time" is an apt description. The bands sound is primarily centered on African rythms and Celtic stringed instruments blended together somehow to make very unique and powerful music. This time however there is an obvious techno influence to many of the tracks, hence the "Further In Time". African, Celtic, and techno? If your tired of the same old sound, you've got to admit, this is something out of the ordinary.

A couple of tracks really stand out for me. The first is "When You're Falling" with Peter Gabriel on vocals. Combine this track with his own "In Your Eyes" and you get a real sense of what Peter's 'Rhythm Of The Saints' would sound like. Spectacular! Robert Plant supplies the vocals on "Life Begin Again". Both of these tracks stand out a bit mainly because the Afro Celt part is downplayed a bit too much I think. Anyway, they are great tracks. I'll comp the Peter Gabriel track if Rick's best of new music series gets going.

Aside from the guest spots, the unique instrumentation makes this the great listen that it is. I don't even know what most of these things are, but they sure sound cool:
bouzouki
bodhran
kora
balafon
dhol drums
tabla
kalsi kit
uillean pipes
djembe
hurdy gurdy.

NP: Enya-A Day Without Rain. I don't care what Yech says, this disc is gorgeous and Enya ain't too shabby either. I'll take Enya over Diana Krall any day in my lifetime.

Jim,
I bought this for my wife for Christmas and have listened to it only once. It's likeable, but it would take a few more listens for me to really form an informed opinion.

BTW, I like Enya quite a bit too. Her music virtually shimmers.
