Was thrumming through my Golf Digest recently while thinking about some comps I received recently (Canadian Framing Device-audiobill, Covercraft-rae, and Alt Country-DLD) and I said to myself, "self, what magazines do these people subscribe to?"
Apart from my golf habit I also get Men's Journal and Muscle and Fitness. The homeboy side of me likes Cooking Light. I feel ashamed that I do not subscribe to any music rags but haven't found any that I actually like to read. Sound and Vision is ok but I don't subscribe. I guess this is another survey but what do you guys like to read (sans porno)?

and Magnet has a great album review section. Of course, I'm not a guy, but I started buying these magazines based on dbi's rec's.

Golf Digest has one of the best humour contributors in Dan Jenkins, IMO, thanks to DLD! Alt-country was the first comp I ever received and still one of my favourites.

What's your handicap, allears? Other than the fact that its rude to listen to music while your golfing!

You mean it's rude to play my boom box whilst enjoying a cold one in the shade of a golf cart? Perhaps that's why my handicap is around 24. Just took it up last year and have been totally hooked since.

I subscribe to 2 "Home Theater" & "Beatlology" (Great Canadian magazine, dedicated to Beatles).
I read "VW Trends" and "Dune Buggies & Hot VW's" on a regular basis and the scatter Rolling Stone & Stereophile Guide to Home Theater.

Speaking of the Fab Four, have you ever heard of or bought a copy of Day Trippin'? It's another mag dedicated to John, Paul, George, & Ringo.

Sound and Vision (or whateverthehell its name currently is, its gone way downhill from its heyday in the 70's when they took reviewing albums damn serious. Still have the old ones and occasionally read the old music reviews. Anyone remember Steve Simels cop out review of Never Mind the Bullocks?)
Absolute Sound (Is that a mag???, more like a fun catalogue)
Food and Wine (wife's, but I like to eat and drink......)

What's this guy doing nowadays, anyway? I occasionally see a review of his in S&V but not that often. I've still got copies of Stereo Review from as far back as '74. When Big Star's "Radio City" made their "Best of the Month" column, I wrote Simels and told him I had been unable to find a copy of the album anywhere, so a few weeks later, lo and behold, the postman brings me a promotional copy of the album (I still have it), along with a note from Simels saying he was able to "wrangle a promotional copy out of Ardent Records...just don't expect Abbey Road- more like Beatles '65".

You still have 25 year old magazines around? Guess they might be kinda fun to look at now. That's a nice story Rick. Simels was a pretty good reviewer, although I often found some of his reviews off the mark for my own taste, but still enjoyable to read. Definitely one of the only decent rock reviewers working in a stereo mag at the time (and probably since too).

Yeah, still got a few of those old mags. One thing that's especially fun about them is the ads for those humongous Pioneer speakers, Sansui receivers, Technics turntables, etc. Stereo Review/Steve Simels was probably my main source of guidance on music choices back then, along with Rolling Stone, and sometimes, Circus! :o)

I have a whole box of mid-70's Circus and other Music magazines, Yes, Genesis, Tull, Trower, etc.

I keep them for the articles and in case I need a new hair style (hahah)

Remember Crawdaddy? I have one of those with McCartney on the cover (1976), another with George Harrison. How about one called Zoo World? That was a paper that you had to unfold it to read. There was another mag back then similar to Rolling Stone called Music Gig. (not the same as the current live mag called Gig) I've got a at least one Hit Parader from 1969 with John Lennon on the cover, and some from 1970-72. Hit Parader was great for the lyrics in each issue.

the was something out of england, can't quite remember it, very good though and it listed all the UK gigs, perhaps something like music express?

I also have a few Eurock magazines, mostly prog stuff that was recently re-released on a CD-Rom.

Yeah- I have a whole collection of Stereo Review, Audio, High Fidelity going back a good 30 Years- Thanks to Ebay for filling in my collection. Those "old" Sansui Receivers by the way are Great- as was all the hi fi gear made back then- much better quality and distinctive styling than whats around nowadays- generic, cheap black plastic audio/video receivers that look more like vcr's.
Good call on the old stylingDLD

Love seeing them in pawnshops, thrift shops etc. The white dials, and a tuning knob that when you twist it with some torque and take your fingers off, the knob keeps on moving down the dial, heavy counterweight supposedly meant better quality. Owned a 3 way set of Sansui speakers, some Heils, and a GREAT Sony receiver that I regret to this day of chunking.

The ones I look forward to the most are Filmfax and sister mag Outre'. Great interviews with b-movie and genre actors, directors, producers, and writers, reviews of new releases (old movies) on vhs and dvd, books on movie topics, and soundtracks and other oddities on cd. I'm a nut for 50s-60s scifi/horror and these mags fit the bill. Universal vs. Hammer debates, Ray Harryhausen's movie making magic, b-movie catalogs for UFO, biker, juvenile delinquet, and horror. Always something new on Ed Wood. Series on Russian scifi, Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows, space artists like Chesley Bonnestell, Von Braun and the Huntsville space & rocket center, ufo sightings/encounters and their impact on movies, etc.

I've subscribed in the past to stereo review/sound & vision and still pick up a copy occasionally and Surfer which is ok but once your subscription runs out there's no need to renew 'cause the pictures are no longer distinguishable (it might be different for those who actually surf). I let my Rolling Stone run out a few years ago and haven't picked up another. I guess it's because the current music scene doesn't excite me too much.

I like the UK mag What Hi-Fi? but much of the cool 2 channel stuff they review is not available in the US and that can be frustrating (I'm the ultimate consumer - if it's available somewhere it should be at least available to me whether I want it or not)
