Some surprising choices at the library this AMJim Clark
Aug 23, 2001 10:20 AM
don't mean to bore anyone-getting tired of my plundering? just move along.

The Beatles-Past Masters Vol. 1
The Beatles-Past Masters Vol. 2 I already 'fessed up to not liking the Beatles and weathered the firestorm that ensued. I'll try again. I guess these are a collection of not so common songs that maybe I won't hate. Worth a try.

Bob Marley-Uprising
Bob Marley-Legend
Peter Tosh-the Best of Peter Tosh. Didn't have any Marley either. Figured while I was at it I'd grab Peter too.

Hank Williams Sr-24 Greatest Hits Vol 2
Hank Williams Sr-24 Of Hank Williams Greatest Hits-If all else fails-my Dad wants them.

Rancid-Life Won't Wait-don't know what to expect-I hope it's not (rancid)
R.E.M.-Document
Phish-Billy Breathes-high hopes for this
Nirvana-Unplugged-have heard good things about this
Indigo Girls-come On Now Social
Indigo Girls-Shaming Of The Sun-Never listened to the Indigo Girls either

David Bowie-Earthing-Not expecting too much here
Cake-Prolonging The Magic-Could be good?
Johnny Cash-At Folsom Prison and San Quintin
Marshall Crenshaw-Miracle of Science
Peter Gabriel-Secret World Live-Never knew this existed
Jewel-Pieces Of You
Annie Lennox-Medusa
Third Eye Blind-too commercial-we will see.
Orb-Orblivion??? I'm hoping it's a gem
Smashing Pumpkins-Machina-I downloaded the tracks directly from the band site originally, these must sound better.
Beastie Boys III-Need some bass
Music From The X-Files
Adam Sandler-What's your Name? Hey, he does sing at times
Clueless-Soundtrack The Muffs, Lightning Seeds, and Boss Tones-can't be all bad. Plus a Radiohead song-what are they like?
Mission Impossible Soundtrack-Bjork, Massive Attack, and many others-looks like a nice sampler.

That is all I could carry.

dude, you've got one cool library!RPM
Aug 23, 2001 10:42 AM
Seems like the 2 local lib's I have access to have basically an s-load of classical (which is good) then a half an s-load of jazz and jazz realted material (also good) but when it comes to popular & rock bands, the selection is fairly limited. Surely nothing like what you're finding.
btw, how do you find time to peruse all that music in 2 weeks plus listen to ther stuff?

Rick
Yeah, we should meet in Kansas and party at Jim's library (nt)Darius

It's just nutsJim Clark

There are 13 local branches of the County Library system. I'm 2 blocks away from one. I'm 3 miles away from 2 more North or South. The main branch is 4 miles away. Lenexa is a suburb of KC on the KS side so it isn't too far anywhere, 20 minutes max. So far I've only been to 5 branches. Of course plenty of stuff is checked out too. Everytime you go back there's more.

Time-well that isn't too bad either. Depending on the mood I'm in I either retired 4 years ago or became a stay at home Dad 4 years ago. We were fortunate that one of us was able to do this and still maintain our standard of living. the library is one source of virtually free entertainment and I capitalize on it. My wife is a PT and actually helps folks and makes the world a better place plus she liked her job. I worked for Hormel. I figured the world might be a better place without another middle manager directing a Spam selling salesforce.

This past week has been especially nice. My youngest started first grade last Wednesday. 8-3 free, well, kinda free I still have 18 million projects going on. Naturally, music makes the jobs go smoother.

Wow, retired at what, 40? Lucky bastid!

I'm a stay at home dad too I guess, but without the kids.

Geez louise! I guess I need to find a better pic to hang up at DBI's joint. Actually, 37 now which means I 'retired' at 33. I enjoy it and the freedom that it affords in some ways. To be honest it's just the way it worked out. We didn't want someone else screwing up our kids.

If someone's gonna screw up my kids, then damn it, it may as well be me. I at least should see it coming. You know, I actually cook and clean and do laundry. Do you?

though I have worked nights for at least 6 of those 7 years. And yes, I too will have two chillun in school. Time enough to spend on music and my other hobby, DIY speaker building.
OH MY!Jim Clark
Aug 23, 2001 12:33 PM
DIY speakers? I'm gonna set my self up with a set of the AR DIY's before the end of the year. Have you done those or is that to 'beginnerish' for you?

that has been the hardest part of staying home, not buying whatever I want, when I want it. It was killing me last year not ordering the Norh marble 9.0's. I'm content with my system but it has been 8 years with the same speakers (Klipsch KG 4.2's) but they suit my taste and I'm willing to wait. Currently working on my CD/VHS holder. Everyday it becomes more important to get that thing finished.

I actually experiment with single-driver full-range concept myself. I have two different approaches so far; a single driver speaker based on a Radio Shack dual cone driver (5.25"), and a three way using a 5.25" dual cone driver, full-range, augmented by two like sized woofers, and a super tweeter, using upper grade first order cross-over components. I like to fing old cabinets at pawn shops that have near rotted drivers (they're cheaper) and recycle them. S'fun.

thoughts on some of that stuffRae
Aug 23, 2001 11:36 AM
• The Beatles Past Masters sets are not neccessarily "not so common" songs (although some of them are), just Beatles songs that weren't released on the UK LPs. My guess is that you won't like these any more than the Beatles you've already heard, but hey, miracles can happen.

• Let me know what you think of that Rancid. It's been slipping down my list but I still might pick it up if you say good things.

• I actually like that Bowie album quite a bit. I might be in the minority on this one but on the other hand I have a different historical perspective on his work. He did a great acoustic version of "Dead Man Walking" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien around the time of its release... truly transcendent... I'll send it to you on a comp sometime (or you could just download it since it's only available on the OOP Live in Studio 6A anyway, so it wouldn't be stealing).

• Johnny Cash, woohoo! I have At San Quentin on vinyl. If you're a Cash fan you'll love it.

• The Orb is an older electronica group. Kind of IDM, ambient stuff... it's no Aphex Twin but I like it. The Orb's Adventures Beyond the ULTRAworld is considered a classic of the genre... their single "Blue Room" holds some kind of distinction for being the longest single (length-wise) on the British charts (it was something like 20 minutes long)... I assume that Orblivion is a newer album; I haven't heard it.

• Is that Beastie Boys album Licensed to Ill or Ill Communication?

• Is that X-Files CD Songs in the Key of X or the movie soundtrack?

• I do like the Clueless soundtrack in a silly kind of way. The Radiohead song on there is an acoustic version of "Fake Plastic Trees" from The Bends.

• What Björk song is on the Mission Impossible soundtrack? (I'm trying to think of what song might go with that movie... possibly "Army of Me"?) For that matter, what Massive Attack song?

Sounds like you got some good stuff. Happy listening.

~Rae

NP: those White Stripes again

Here's the info/responses:

Beatles-Oh well, I just read the inserts before deciding to grab it.

Johnny Cash-Love Johnny Cash, this is about my 5'th aquisition.

Orb-Well, that's basically what I was hoping for.

Beasties-That would be "Communication"

X-Files is "The Truth And The Light-Music From X-files". this is by Mark Snow? I also obtained earlier "X-Files: The Album":
One - Filter
Flower Man - Tonic
Walking After You - Foo Fighters
Beacon Light - Ween
Invisible Sun - Sting & Aswad
Deuce - The Cardigans
One More Murder - Better Than Ezra
More Than This - The Cure
Hunter - Bjork
16 Horses - Soul Coughing
Crystal Ship - X
Black - Sarah McLachlan
Teotihuacan - Noel Gallagher
The X-Files Theme - The Dust Brothers

Mission Impossible: Massive Attack-"Spying Glass" very cool song, btw. Bjork-"Headphones". Also a song by Pulp called "I Spy" which is a really cool song. I'd never heard of Pulp and was pleasantly surprised. You of course probably already know all about them.

BTW, finally got my two Le Tigre Cd's in earlier this week. Very nice editions to my collection. to be honest I think I'm liking the EP better than the regular release. Thanks for including it on your comp.

NP: Mission Impossible Soundtrack
hmmRae
Aug 23, 2001 12:09 PM
So that X-Files CD is all score music? That sounds kind of cool. The other one you have is the movie soundtrack, but there's also a television soundtrack called Songs in the Key of X. That's a good one (a cut above the movie soundtrack IMHO) so snag it if you see it at the library next time.

"Headphones" seems an odd choice for a movie soundtrack (especially a movie as loud as Mission Impossible). Great song, though. Yeah, I do like Pulp too. There was a thread a few months ago about their classic album Different Class which includes "I Spy" and also the very good "Common People". If you like the song you heard I highly recommend picking that one up.

Hi Rae, I really like "Dead Man Walking" but wondered if I was just a sucker for its dancy hook... so I'd love to hear an acoustic version, especially one so recommended. Where can I download it?

Didja get my comps? I just moved so most of my CDs are in boxes for a few more days... but I listened to Covercraft while packing and quite enjoyed it.
When do you have time??Masonjar

I'm always grabbin' cd's at the library, but I hardly ever have time to listen to them.. lol. I have two great libraries in my area.. Plus one of them even has DVD's.

Time I got!Jim Clark
Aug 23, 2001 1:25 PM
As a stay at home Dad, I've been able to listen to tons of stuff all the time. It's a shame to not be able to share it with buddies and such, but of course they all have jobs. that's were you nice folks come in.

I'm involved in some Jerry Springeresque family deal with a deadbeat absentee father who just now, after 32 years decided to look me up. 'Course he has brain cancer and is dying. Anyway, I took off to IL last Friday (for selfish reasons) and had an additional 840 miles of listening time. Now that my youngest goes to first grade I've got 8-3 uninterupted. I've always found time to listen though, more so since I came to RR.

Actually, a fellow AR, not RR, user has expressed some concern over my practice. Probably tomorrow I'll post my response. Some would call it rationalization, I would call it reasoning. At any rate, while I feel it's a personal choice it's something I've given a great deal of thought to.

That live Peter Gabriel . . .Troy
Aug 23, 2001 4:52 PM
. . . is incredible. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Try and find the video if you can because the visuals are amazing. What's her name does some wonderful throaty backgound singing and Manu Katche's drumming is supple and powerful.
I second that video rave ..and the singer is...richmon
Aug 24, 2001 4:51 AM
Paula Cole, who went on to a sucessful solo career after touring with Gabriel. I saw her open for Sarah Mclachlin, she's way better live than on disc, but her first and 3rd CD's are PFG (pretty f#$%king good).
That Rancid album kicks a$$. Check out the title track (nt)Darius

Nice pickup!!!!!Stone

Now if you like Uprising, go out and buy as many Marley CDs as possible. They're fantastic. Recent remasters ya know? Also, Tosh has a couple great albums too.

I agree with whoever posted below about the Rancid - I really like these guys and this album in particular. Geez, I could go on and on.... REM, Jewel, Cake, Clueless, Johnny Cash = all great.

Beware the Third Eye Blind and Annie Lennox - not two of my faves.

But what a pickup!! Nice work.
