| What are the good Music Magazines with Sampler CD's | Jim Clark Aug 24, 2001 5:23 AM | | I'm more interested in Modern Music but for this thread to have some value to all, it would be helpful to note what types of music the magazine is exploring. Want to be really helpful? Does the mag have a web address?
DBI told me about CMJ and I've ordered online but after a month-nothing yet. Usually they are so excited to get an order that you get the mag in a week from the folks.
Just learned of Lexicon, a synth-pop mag with a sampler CD from DustyChalk, but upon trying to order, I discovered that they just folded. Great. I'm off to a rollicking start.

| Here's a couple more | dbi Aug 24, 2001 9:46 AM | | Magnet
http://www.magnetmagazine.com
(almost entirely indie rock oriented with many reveiews and a CD every other issue ... also a free CD from a list of 10 current releases with $14.95 subscription ... good articles and content)
Uncut
http://www.uncut.co.uk
(this is my favorite after chrisnz turned me on to it a few months ago ... a year subscription costs about $90 in US but you can save 25% until 8-31-01 @ 1-888-313-5528 ... offer code 25Q ... I haven't pulled the trigger yet, that's still a lot of greenbacks)

| Oops ... | dbi Aug 24, 2001 5:38 PM | | what I meant to say about Magnet is that there is an issue every other month (6 per year) with a CD attached to each issue.
And Uncut is about half movies and half music with an emphasis on modern rock. Lots of coverage of recent movies on DVD and usually a big cover story. A couple months ago it was Dylan, last month the Beatles and this month Radiohead. Not sure what the current issue cover story is since I get it about 3 weeks late at my newstand.

| Re: CMJ | FP Aug 24, 2001 1:10 PM | | They had problems w/ the CD that was enclosed w/ the August(?) ish, so it took forever for mine to get here, too. You'll probably get 2 discs out of the deal, and one won't work.

| Progression, Uncut, Mojo? | KevB Aug 24, 2001 1:20 PM | | If you are a prog music fan, Progression is essential, and they include prog samplers. It is only quarterly, and of course, if you don't like prog.....
I also have been buying Uncut at the newstands. Reviews give a English perspective. I don't know if Mojo includes samplers from time to time or not, but it also is very good. |

| Lexicon and Re: Uncut, Mojo-prog focus with these two as well? | DustyChalk Aug 24, 2001 8:20 PM | | No, only Progression is the progressive magazine -- and I've gotten some amazing samplers out of that one! Uncut is described above. Funny sidenote about my continuing alienation -- I started getting it when it first came out, and eventually stopped, whereas others on this board seemed to _develop_ an interest... Mojo is more classic rock, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. I don't think it comes with a sampler (often, if at all). Purveyors of the more esoteric (I.E. us aliens) would be familiar with Wire (thewire.co.uk, I think). This is usually even farther out in left field than I usually am. Losing Today comes with samplers, but is harder to find. (Contemporary Alternative) Sorry about Lexicon, didn't know. I'll have to see what the scoop is about that series of CD's. They (A Different Drum) still do an awful lot of samplers. For you metal heads, Kerrang! often has a sampler (e.g., current issue has one), and there's another one, Rock something...will have to look it up... Oh, and BTW, JC, AMG does a pretty good rundown of 80's synthpop...they just ignored the contemporary scene, which is what adifferentdrum.com is good for. |
| Q and CMJ | Snowbunny Aug 24, 2001 5:01 PM | | Q Magazine from Britain has excellent reviews of all genre, even though the one cd I got from them was completely Dance Club music.
But their system of reviewing is excellent with stars systems such as: *** Good. Not for everyone, but fine within its field. And each review is prefaced with a short description such as: Ali Phoenix - Introspective Norwegian lo-fi-short on belly laughs. Huh? Anyway, they also include a "Like this - Try this" suggestion which is very helpful to us newbies.
And CMJ must be getting too popular, thanks to dbi. Whole months have gone by where they were sold out to our local news-sellers!
