| Does anybody remember the band Sweet? | Zoltan61 Aug 27, 2001 2:24 AM | | They were truly the favorite band of my childhood back in Europe in the early 70's. Especially the song Set Me Free, plus all the others, like Fox On The Run, Ballroom Blitz, No You Don't, Teenage Rampage, Love Is Like Oxygene, AC/DC, Into The Night, etc. Did these songs ever make it to the charts here in the US? I've heard that two of the four members are already dead - is it true? |
| re: Does anybody remember the band Sweet? | Rick H Aug 27, 2001 4:45 AM | | I bought the 45 of "Action" back in '76, I LOVED that record and played the heck out of it with the volume cranked up pretty high. "Love Is Like Oxygen" was another fave. I haven't heard about former members passing away. "Ballroom Blitz" was a smash hit here in the states, and "Action" I think made it into at least the Top 20. "Love Is Like Oxygen" was a hit as well and the long version got played on FM. This is the same group that hit with "Little Willie" around '72 or '73, wasnt' it? |
| Unfortunately I do | Grblgrbl Aug 27, 2001 5:34 AM | | They were a kind of a bubble gum version of glam in the early to mid 70s. I couldn't stand them. I remember both Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run being big hits in the US. |
| They were a bubblegum version of Spinal Tap | #LB Aug 27, 2001 7:23 AM | | My brother had the album (I think it was called Give Us a Wink) Cool album cover concept, but I remember putting that LP on back in the mid '80s and my brother was quite embarrised. |
| Fortunately I do, they wrote some memorable songs | dayvd Aug 27, 2001 7:44 AM | | There is a place for the band "Sweet", its
one of the forms of music I enjoy, you only need to open your
minds & enjoy. Its feel good stuff & what's wrong with that! |
| Nothing wrong with that | Grblgrbl Aug 27, 2001 8:25 AM | | If you enjoy it, that's great. It's not my cup of tea though. |
| Chinnichapp! | DustyChalk Aug 27, 2001 2:11 PM | | _Desolation Blvd._ is an awesome album. Another one of those prodigies from under the wings of Mike Chapman and Nikki Chinn (?sp). And yet, they weren't just "product" -- I think they were good in their own right. I just think that those two gave their career the swift kick in the arse that it needed. I also enjoyed _Give Us A Wink_ a lot. I bought it on the strength of the single "Action" (yes, they had bit of success over here in the states around that time) and was not disappointed. Thanks for taking me back. |
| Speaking of Chinnichapp, | Zoltan61 Aug 28, 2001 3:32 AM | | Chinn and Chapman have also written songs for some other artists of the era, stars like Suzy Quatro, Mud and Smokey. BTW, it's too bad that the Desolation Boulevard doesn't have the song Teenage Rampage. |
| re: Sweet deaths | Dave M. Aug 27, 2001 10:22 PM | | Yes, two of the band members have passed on. The singer, Brian Conolly, died two or three years ago from some type of disease. (I'm not sure if it was cancer or something else.) As far as the second member (it was either the guitarist or the drummer) is concerned, an auto accident was the cause of death. It occurred back in the eighties. |
