| X-mas booty! | Ms. Nomer Dec 25, 2001 7:26 AM | | Funny, I didn't ask for any music this year but received three albums I wanted and three I didn't even know I wanted :-). What's amazing to me is these albums came from my brothers and they're hundreds of miles away from me, though I suppose it helps that they're in their early twenties (8 and 10 years my junior) and don't listen to much mainstream music. Anyway, here's my haul:
Shellac - At Action Park
Slint - Spiderland
June Of 44 - Four Great Points (NP: and it sounds excellent)
Fugazi - The Argument
Chris Whitley - Rocket House
Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong
How'd everyone else make out? |

| Haven't had the chance to listen to "Spiderland" just yet... | Ms. Nomer Dec 25, 2001 5:13 PM | | ...but will on my way to work tomorrow. One of my brothers took his Jesus Lizard "Head/Pure" and "Liar" CDs with him and I'm burning them right now. More good stuff :-). |
| Slint "Spiderland" initial impressions. | Ms. Nomer Dec 28, 2001 12:00 PM | | The music is excellent. A heavier version of Built to Spill, or like a cross between BtS, Tool, Deftones, and Melvins. It's taking me a while to warm to the singspeak vocals, but I'm enjoying it much more now at home than I did on the first few spins in the car. |
| interesting perspective.. | Masonjar Dec 28, 2001 12:54 PM | | I'm always intrigued to hear what people think of this album, since you are hearing it pretty much out of context of the environment that spawned it (though you are more familiar than most folks with the whole 'heavy indie' scene of the early 90's).. The only band you mentioned that pre-dates Slint are the Melvins of course.. What is most interesting to me is how Slint sort of summarized a lot of what was happening in the late 80's (Bastro, B!tch Magnet {if you grow to like Spiderland, definately check out B!tch Magnet's Ben Hur, a brilliant album that kind of got overshadowed by Spiderland, Big Black, Scratch Acid), while at the same time launching an entire new scene.. It was wild watching all the "slintastic" bands popping up all over the place (well esp in Louisville) in the wake of Spiderland, most notably Rodan, Crain, Polvo, Seam then later June of '44, Shipping News, Gastr del Sol).. To listen to Spiderland with fresh ears over 10 years after it was released must be pretty neat..

| Not much music | Jim Clark Dec 26, 2001 8:25 AM | | But plenty of AV stuff. I did get the Alphaville DVD I've been wanting. This was shot in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1999. This marked the first ever performance of the band in all of North America. On the plus side, it contains a 20 song set featuring pretty much all of my faves. My copy is also autographed by Marion Gold and # 891 in a set of 2500. Pretty cool for a junkie like me. It's not all great though. The performance isn't exactly riveting, it would be just about as good with the TV off, occasionally even better as it's clear that at least on occasion that there is some lip syncing going on. Also the DVD is in Pro Logic and I don't have PLII. Switching to stereo fixed things up nicely though. All in all I'm still very happy and grateful to my wife.
Other DVD's-Rush Hour 2 and Jurassic Park 3 which doesn't suck nearly as much as I'd have figured.
Finally I got a pair of headphones. Not the high dollar hi-rez things you guys talk about. This is a pair of 20-30 dollar Jenson headphones that I can plug into the discman that I use when I blow snow, mow grass, blow the leaves, wash the car with the pressure washer...the full size really helps me hear the disc rather than the machine. Just what I wanted.
Hope you guys come out as good/better.

| June of 44 .... nice | dbi Dec 26, 2001 8:56 AM | | Nice haul Pat! I have that June of 44 and the one prior, Tropics and Meridians, on vinyl and they are pretty nice. Four Great Points was mostly recorded at Electrical Audio Recording in Chicago which probably means Steve Albini was involved but I don't know for sure. I haven't listened in quite a while so can't recall which song, but I remember one that is very atmospheric and throws up a really nice image throughout my room. Cool stuff. Quarterstick Records puts out some good vinyl including a few by Rachel's if you want to experience some nice neo-classical music with some strange twists and turns, especially the last one Selenography, but the two before that are very good too.

| No mention of Albini in the liner notes. | Ms. Nomer Dec 28, 2001 11:48 AM | | It was indeed recorded at Electric Audio Recordings and says "Steve and Heather Housed the technology (sorry about the mess)", so that Steve is likely him, I think. Albini was part of the Shellac album though. In the liner notes it says "This was not mastered directly to metal or pressed into 165 grams of dye-blackened vinyl. There is, in fact, nothing at all special about the manufacture of this compact disc." The back of the Slint cover says "This recording is meant to be listened to on vinyl." When I'm ready to buy more albums from these bands I think I'll take their advice and get LPs :-). |
| Albini on Vinyl.. | Masonjar Dec 28, 2001 1:01 PM | | I have quite a few Albini recordings on vinyl (Shellac's At Action Park, Spiderland's EP and Tweeze, Zeni Geva's Desire for Agony to name a few..), and they all sound amazing. Though I've yet gotten Spiderland on vinyl as of yet, I can attest to the fact that the vinyl edition does sound very good. Steve is a known analog-head and has taken every chance he can get over the past 15 years or so to dis the cd.. :)

| Meager meager meager | DLD Dec 26, 2001 1:12 PM | | I'm addicted to: Music, Movies, Fishing, Tennis, Golf. These are NOT secret fetishes, so presents related to any and all of these five things were:
Run Lola Run soundtrack (cool) (Daughter)
Dave Brubeck Quartet, Time Out (ditto) (Son)
I would have willingly traded my carry on , my shaving kit, the freakin Pizza Stone and cologne/after shave (all from Mrs. Nasty, a real sweetheart otherwise) for their value in CDs, DVDs, lures, or Titelists, fortunately no ties, slippers, or belts. |
