| Which album is the best intro to Guided By Voices? (nt) | Darius Jan 2, 2002 9:40 AM | | |
| Bee Thousand. | Rae Jan 2, 2002 10:51 AM | | That's the short answer. As always, it depends. Alien Lanes is almost equally as good IMO. I assume you have no problem with the lofi four-track recording style (or fragmented, demo-y songs), but if you are looking for something more polished then your best bet is the newest one, Isolation Drills. Are you just deciding to get into them on a whim or on the strength of recs and good press, or did you hear a specific song that made you want to pick up an album? That would probably influence my advice too.
In any case, happy listening. They're a great band.

| I heard them live on HBO's Reverb and thought they kicked a$$ | Darius Jan 2, 2002 11:32 AM | | Does that change your recommendations (prob. not)? I tried to get tickets to the New Year's Eve show at the Apollo Theater, but they were playing with The Strokes, so that was impossible.
I will check out one of the platters you mentioned. Thanks |
| I would second Bee Thousand... | Stone Jan 2, 2002 2:13 PM | | I have 4 of their albums, and have heard some of Isolation Drills (which I don't have). Bee Thousand is great and it my favorite of what I've heard, but as Rae said, it's definitely lo-fi, whereas their past couple of albums aren't. I haven't heard Alien Lanes, but I hear a lot of raves about it. I would stay away from Do The Collapse (sub-par performance and produced by Ric Ocasek).

| I would third(?) Bee Thousand... | Whooptee Jan 3, 2002 1:54 AM | | I Am a Scientist, Gold Star Robot Boy, The Golden Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory are some pretty cool tunes as are several others. I also like the Mag Earwhig! album. It has a mix of the typical GBV lo-fi thing with some harder rockin' stuff that has a cleaner sound thanks in part to the backing band Pollard brought in for the recording.

| How about "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars, and Dreaming"? | Swish Jan 3, 2002 4:07 AM | | I have about 8 or 9 of their discs and it's my favorite. Plenty of lush melodies on top of distorted guitars, and probably not as "lo-fi" as Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes while still maintaining the GBV sound. Highly recommended. |
| Under the Bushes, Under the Stars | Rae Jan 3, 2002 6:32 AM | | ...I think you're picking up the "and Dreaming" part from the Dave Matthews Band's Under the Table and Dreaming. Yeah, that's a good one too if you can find it for its intended price (I've seen a lot of stores around here mark used copies as if it was supposed to be priced as a double-disc set). "The Official Ironmen Rally Song" is probably my favorite GBV song.

| Hmmm. I always thought that was the full name of the record. | Swish Jan 4, 2002 7:41 PM | | But perhaps you're correct. I'll have to check on it though, as I always go down swinging! "Ironmen" is my fave also. What a bass line on that sucker. Kills me every time I hear it. |
