Bands or solo artists that have played out...PwrPopGuy

...or, their style seems tired and everything they put out pretty much sounds like reworkings of what they've previously done. It would do these folks good to move on in a totally new direction. I was listening to a Sting tune and it prompted this thread. Here's a few:

Sting
Paul McCartney
Stevie Nicks
Rush (although I am interested in hearing what their new one is going to sound like)
Supertramp (I listened to a few samples of their latest album- they badly need Roger Hodgson back)
Aerosmith
Brian Wilson (thank God the man's still here, he's a real survivor if there ever was one, but how about some new & inspired tunes)
Rolling Stones
John Fogerty
AC/DC
I'll tweak your question into "bands/artist that should retire":RPM

Yeah, I agree. They should have given up after Painful, their one appropriately titled album. :-)

Even though "Love & Theft" was not particularly enlightening to my ears, he still churns out terrific music with ambitious lyrics. Further, based on the performance I witnessed in February, he also is still one heck of a live performer. It would be sad to see his legacy end so soon. :-)

Oh, well, different strokes...(I do agree with you about Aerosmith, PF, Stones, Kansas & Yes).

The Stones.
Completely agree with Metallica.
Completely disagree with Pink Floyd. _A Momentary Lapse of Reason_ and _Division Bell_ were excellent albums, far better than most of that drivel on the radio.

Little Feat have run their course many moons ago. 'Chinese Work Songs' is a horribly uninspired disc recycling old themes with the same old tired beat. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT purchase this disc.

As I am sure that Allears can attest, there are several big festivals of really played-out bands every year in Wisconsin at Alpine Valley and one in Kaukauna (near Appleton). These fests are a touring who's who of 1977-1982 rock: Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Eddie Money, Toto, etc.... The radio ads always feature the guy with the MONSTER TRUCK!!! ad voice. Once you enter into the rural areas of Wisconsin, that classic rock is about all that is played on the radio other than country.

The following beer story says a lot about the tastes of rural Wisconsinites (a very hardworking, friendly and good group on average, who perhaps are a bit too apprehensive about change): A friend of mine grew up on a 400 acre dairy farm and after she moved to Madison, she had a bunch of friends and relatives from home come visit on a Friday night. We went out and I suggested a local brew pub that makes excellent beers. Seeing that they were somewhat nervous about "strange" darker colored beers, I got them a pitcher of nice, light, pleasant yellow pilsner. After everyone had tasted it, they all wrinkled up their noses and one asked "Uhh, can we get a pitcher of Miller Lite? This fancy beer tastes funny!" I stared at them incredulously for a second and then responded "Tastes funny? That's called flavor!"
