It's not brand new, it came out in 2000 and was his first outing with Telarc. I've not heard any of his stuff before I bought this, it was sort of an impulse buy after reading a review, so I can't say how it stands alongside his other work.

It got an ok review on Allmusic but I think it's pretty good, kind of blends jazz fusion, reggae and afro sounds all into one with vocals on a couple of tracks. I guess if you know his work you might like.

He has a very subtle understated guitar sound and an excellent backing band and it's nice to have in my collection but I don't think I would buy anymore of his work. According to Allmusic he has a new one out now on Telarc but this has all the usual quality Telarc sonics.

Cheers

What's up with the shouting there, Rick? :o)

Shady Tree
The Blue Rags
(these two were sent to me by BradC for possible inclusion on a future "Local artists" comp)

Also, got a couple of discs from Mastercylinder yesterday for the same project, and have given them one spin

Otherwise,
CRSIII - this comp makes for great driving tunes
McCartney- Driving Rain
Starclock - s/t
Hyfi's Jazz Fusion comp

That's all that comes to mind at the moment. I'm trying not to listen as much so I can concentrate on getting better on acoustic fingerstyle guitar.

Hey Rick,
I too, have been practicing fingerstyle guitar.
I'm trying to perfect "Mood for a Day" by Steve Howe, (the best real musician...ooops sorry that slipped out..didn't mean to start anything ;^)).

Also working on "Horizons" by Steve Hackett (Genesis)

I picked up a book of Paul Simon songs arranged for fingerstyle. That should be challenging.

I've got several instructional videos on the subject by folks like Mark Hanson, Rick Ruskin, Jamie Findlay, Fred Sokolow ("Map of the Fretboard") None of these guys are rock players as such if you're not familiar with them but they're excellent fingerstylists.. This past weekend I picked up "Fingerstyle Christmas" by Mark Hanson- he teaches four Christmas standards, note-for-note, and I figure by the time I learn them, it'll be Christmas, with any luck.
The Paul Simon book sounds very interesting. Another good acoustic player with quality guitar-based material is James Taylor, , ex., "Mexico". About fingerstyle, it's challenging as hell and takes a lot of concentration and persistence but when you got it, it sounds very impressive. Good luck.
I forgot to mention a couple of websites...PwrPopGuy
Apr 16, 2002 10:46 AM
...or did I already mention these some time ago? Anyway, check out www.guitarnoise.com or www.wholenote.com. They're not specifically about fingerstyle guitar but they're excellent info sources for guitar instruction, inspiration, & tablatures (on Whole Note)
thanks, I'll check them out (nt)TodH

Blue Rags- interesting boogie-woogie kind of band, I like a few of the tunes, then some weren't real hot
Shady Tree- I've gotta listen to this one some more to give a fair comment.

Brad, it looks like this local comp idea is going to take a while, as I've only got your offerings and Mastercylinder's. I was in Millenium Music over the weekend, though, and saw a couple of comps with local bands, so I may grab one of those and put something together. I was hoping to get like 7 or 8 contributors from this forum representing their respective regions so I may do another post sometime soon to check interest. Kind of a big undertaking, this idea...
yeah...bradc
Apr 16, 2002 11:41 AM
Blue Rags- yeah i prefer their first album, but couldn't find it, i think i "loaned" it to someone. for that secon album they don't have their original lead singer, but he's back now, and i think they are much better with him than sharing the vocals. the second disk is definitely less bluegrassy.

shady tree-yeah don't be too judgemental. definitely some people sharing the vocals on this that shouldn't be singing :) def. interested in what you have to say about them.

cheers,
bradc

Oh, man, tons of new stuff. No joke. I was on a bit of a moratorium (not as strict as Mason's or Jim's, but an attempt to cut down on new stuff) but that has ended in a big way. Some of my rotation included:

* Pretty Girls Make Graves - Good Health : I was pretty excited when this arrived in my mailbox yesterday. Initial impressions are favorable, but it definitely has less of an edge than the EP. "The Get Away" is a wonderful song.
* Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Live at the El Mocambo : I stumbled across this one used and it seemed like a good find. I don't really like it so far, though. The sound quality is just frustrating to me (I guess the master used here was taped off of a radio broadcast of the show). Does anyone else have this one?
* Marah - Let's Cut the Crap and Hook Up Later On Tonight : an overlooked alt-country gem. A little more on the rock side than a lot of alt-country fare but fans of the genre would do well to try to find this one.
* Les Savy Fav - Go Forth : put "Disco Drive" on repeat; never let it stop.
* Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Blank Generation
* Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
* Steve Earle - Sidetracks
* Reflection Eternal - Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek: Reflection Eternal
* Wicketran - Frills and Flashy Finery
* Aesop Rock - Daylight EP
* Les Savy Fave - ROME (written upside down) EP
* Hammerhead - Into the Vortex
* Sunday Puncher - The Livid Eye
* Martin Devaney - "The Landlord's Daughter"
* The Fucking Champs - III
* Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising

more that I'm forgetting, I'm sure...

Good I'm not alone. Mrs. Hyfi gave me some guff this morning about letting all my upkeep go. "Your not just gonna sit around and spin disks all the time." she said.
Easy for her. All her chores are inside where she keeps my rig at about 90 decibles.

I just hooked up the outdoor speakers so it won't be too bad but how can I get it to play louder than the John Deere?

I won't be there tonight unfortunately...maybe one of these days.

shortly after the used shop opened, i picked up about 4 used discs. After getting home I realized that one of them was severley scratched. It took 2 weeks before I had a chance to get back in there to ask for an exchange, plus I couldn't find my receipt at this point, so I was expecting to get a hard time about trying to get an exchange (from "Ernie", the downstairs guy). but he was totally cool about it and offered an exchange or a refund.
I guess since he's new, he's trying to make a name for himself.

I tend to forget to list what I listen to in my car. I only have a cassette front end player so I usually end up listening to the older "classic" stuff that I have on tape in the car. Last week I was on a JJ binge, my favorite of which was "Big World" a cd I had, then sold, and now regret it. "Tango Atlantico" was a standout.

Thanks for the reminder Mark.

Hi Mary,

I've only given it one, pretty distracted listen so I'd like to hold off on comments for a week or so. I will say that my initial impression was not as favourable as I'd have liked, not because of the quality or lack thereof of the songs, but because of an initial genre bias (heavy '60s country-rock influence).

After I give a few more listens, I'll either email you or post some comments.

My copy is on very nice sub-pop vinyl, (like you expected to hear otherwise).

Buckethead 'Colma' - William Ackermann meets Morcheeba, or trip-hop guitar soundscapes, really nice stuff, suprised no one on this board has mentioned this guy, he wears a Kentucky fried chicken bucket on his head while performing and claims to have been raised by chickens, is supposed to be amazing speed guitarist, but shows his melodic side mostly on Colma.

Dream Theatre 'falling into infinity' - 'Scenes' is supposed to be their best, but I like this one much more, it has all the thrash prog without the screaming vocals.

Gov't Mule 'the deep end'
Psychedelic Furs 'greatest hits'
King Crimson 'thrak'
King Black Acid 'loves a long song'
Albert King 'king of the blues guitar/born under a bad sign'
Rodger Waters 'in the flesh' DVD - this is everything the ravers on this board have said about it- excellent.

um.. anyway,

Buckethead's name pops up around here every once in a while.. I think the problem with him is that he plays on a lot of albums that most people don't get a chance to hear.
He was a member of Guns n' Roses for a few months, until the project got canned.. that was discussed around here some..

My favorite albums containing the work of Buckethead are two albums by Bill Laswell's project Praxis. Transmutation which leans more towards funk (has Bootsy Collins on it too) and Sacrifist which leans more towards industrial and dub.

I have one disc called "Death Cube K" (an anagram(??) of Buckethead) but it has never really caught my attention.. I'll have to give it another listen sometime soon.

i'll have to give _Falling into Infinity_ another listen or two. i remember my first impression of it was pretty good, but it didn't really stick with me after the first half-dozen or so listens the way that _Scenes..._ has. i'm definitely not a big fan of the screaming vocals, so perhaps i should get FiI off the shelf for another spin...

not too much new this week for me. we're in the process of selling our house and buying a new one, so i haven't had as much time to listen to music as i like. some of this week's playlist:

Toy Matinee
Stanton Moore - All Kooked Out
Stanton Moore - Flyin' the Koop (still getting a lot of play)

Pink Floyd - Meddle

not to terribly much i'm afraid.

new stuff:
The Church - After everything now this" - first church release i've picked up. pretty nice stuff, but wasn't really knocked away like i expected from the good word its gotten these parts. but i definitely like it after only two spins, maybe i should check out some of their other releases, i know startfish got a lot of acclaim
Neu! - "Neu!" - my first real krautrock (sp?) purchase. its the first of three albums that have just been reissued. great guitar-laden stuff. i just love when they throw little funk riffs in. its a lot more laid back then i thought it'd be. probably pick something up by Can (any suggestions?) on my next order

Old Stuff:
Cannonball Adderly - "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (LIVE)"
BS&T - "Child is Father to the Man"
Grahm Nash - "Songs for Beginers"
Stanley Turrentine and the 3 Sounds - "Blue Hour"
Isley Brothers - "3+3"

also looking forward to the Spiritualized/BRMC show friday, but i might have to miss it to take care of my dad :(

If you really prefer to get individual albums, you might want to start with "Tago Mago" or "Future Days".

But fact is that, like you asked, their output varies to some large extent, so I still think you wouldn't regret getting "Anthology" instead. I have lots of Can releases, but I would never get rid of their Anthology, it's really excellent.

Hope this helps.

My list looks a lot like maf's (scary :-P)

Death Cab For Cutie The Photo Album - I don't know why I didn't pay attention to this band earlier but if I did this surely would have made my top ten of '01. They're sorta between Built To Spill and Mercury Rev, but not proggy. Highly recommended!

...Trail Of The Dead Source Tags & Codes - I liked it at first and even more now but the recording quality sucks (on CD, anyhow).

Dinosaur Jr. Where You Been

Deconstruction - Every bit as good as any Jane's Addiction album.

The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified - This rocks! Now I have to run out and buy !.

Chisel Set You Free - Haven't played it in a while and the last spin convinced me to get their first full length LP very soon.

Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future and Keep It Like A Secret and Perfect From Now On

Modest Mouse (whenever you see fit) 12"

Sunny Day Real Estate The Rising Tide and How It Feels To Be Something On

Fugazi The Argument

The White Stripes White Blood Cells

Smashing Pumpkins Gish

Sepultura Arise

...and some Kid Dakota, Bows, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Swearing At Motorists (thanks Rae :-))and a buncha comps and probably a few other albums I'm forgetting at the moment. Good week :-)

Arise is great but I think Chaos AD is the one to start with, or perhaps Roots because of its slightly more indie feel. I hope you know what you may be getting yourself into.

As far as Deconstruction is concerned, have you listened to it lately or are you just busying my balls (sorry JC, I should let that die but you have to admit that was one funny typo ;-))?

I do have some metal, although I don't listen to it as much anymore. Most of what I have is on cassette, and is kind of all over the place stylistically, but I do have early Metallica, some Manowar, some Motorhead, and some Slayer, among a few other things. I know Sepultura is highly regarded, but I haven't heard them.

Regarding Deconstruction, I haven't listened to that album since shortly after it came out. I ran out and bought it, listened to it a few times and sold it because I liked it so little. My view of it could be different now, but even if I ended up liking it I seriously doubt I'll ever like it as much as the Jane's albums.

I wouldn't be in too much of a rush to get !. It's far below the quality of their other records, IMO. They hadn't really found their niche musically, the sound quality is poor, and the lyrics are nowhere near as good as they are on Is Terrified-- for the most part, they're pretty angsty teenage stuff. Of course, if you're as big a fan of the group as I think you are, it's probable that nothing I can say will deter you from picking it up. Just consider yourself forewarned.

You're right, I probably will buy it anyway but now I'll put it at the bottom of my wishlist (unless de Soto albums start becoming hard to find). Angsty teenage stuff is sometimes good. ;-)

Only the artists 'cuz I don't recall the album titles offhand:
1. Dave's Spring Cleaning
2. Norah Jones
3. Shannon McNally
4. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
5. Cibo Matto
6. Chris Isaak
7. Moby 'Play' (ok, I recall the easy ones)
8. Switchblade Symphony
9. Ed Harcourt
10. Dwight Yoakam
11. Loudon Wainwright III
12. Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings
13. Those funny voices in my head that tell me to do things I don't want to do.

If I remember correctly you picked up "Three Calamities". What do you think of the CD as a whole?

It makes me sad that yet another band I love is Kaput and I never even had a chance to hear them live. I've been trying to find a bootleg to get some kind of an idea but no luck so far.

I like the disc as a whole. I was totally enamoured with their sound when I first heard them on a comp, so bought a used 'Calamities' when I found one. Their sound, always a haunting minor key, does tend to get old after awhile. My fav tune on the disc is #6 'Monsters.' I like them enough to buy more of their discs, but will wait till I can find them used. I didn't know they broke up though. Is it a bizarre, twisted story? Or just the usual, drug-money-creative differences ending?

I'm not really sure what happened. I guess I could look into the matter.

As for buying used, I'd have it no other way. Makes the wait tough on occasion but I pretty much look for everything used. The only CD I don't have is the remixes and I'm not normally very high on remixes so I'll settle for listening to a few MP3's on occasion.

Take care,

LAST WEEK, THIS WEEK, NEXT WEEK, AND THE NEXTDLD

OK, I'm out here in La la land for three freakin weeks. i love it. Thdese are the CDs/comps that made it thru security with Mrs. Nasty and Mine own sef

1) DBIs Best of 2001. A best of for all times. # 1 on my take it on the road trip list of comps.\\

2) RPM's HDCD comp. cool music, love 90% of it. And my modest Galant's CD player does a good job on this CD Rick, thnx!!

3) Sings For My Kat Comp. Mrs. Nasty tired of her Neil Diamond Hot August Nights 2x cd. Asked that I make her a Neil Diamond "deep cuts" comp to bring on this road trip. Folks, this was a Hell On Earth project, but you know what, I snagged some pretty good tunes. Yea, some smaltz (sp?) but over all, not too shabby if you don't mind digging too deep into the September Morn LP, etc.. I fear that after the tenth play this week, I might do an el puke-o but so far so good. This one makes the Disco comp I made seem revolutionary

4) Yech's Eat Mine Own Shorts. Oh yea. When Mrs. Nasty goes bak to dallas next week with Neil, this one is gonna stay in the player, for like, damn near the rest of the trip, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ah

5) RPM's Lou Reed Rock N Roll Aminal. Nuff said, a classic, it will give yechyu's comp a run for the money.

6) Songs for Trish. A copy of a comp I made for muy sister, includes, Kasey Chambers, Cat Power, Cowboy Junkies, Lucinda, Aimee Mann, gave it to drinkin bud Barry tonight after four bottles of Cakebread. i'll miss it

Random CD pawn sop snags yet to be discovered, presuming there're pawn shops on the West coast.
