| So, who's your favorite female artist?....Looks notwithstanding :-) | RPM Apr 17, 2002 12:34 PM | | I think I'll go with Chrissie Hynde. I'm sure I'll change my pick in a few minutes, butChrissie was one of the fisrt who came to mind. Rick |
| Fiona Apple n/t | AD Apr 17, 2002 12:47 PM | | |
| P.J. Harvey (nt) | maf Apr 17, 2002 12:52 PM | | nt |
| Joan Jett (nt) | nobody Apr 17, 2002 1:16 PM | | nt |
| Billie Holiday | J Apr 17, 2002 1:21 PM | | Oh, you meant rock or pop music? Maybe Kim Shattuck of the Muffs. |
| Sinead O'Connor | Jim Clark Apr 17, 2002 1:35 PM | | I hate to pick just one but I can live with that. Also I've been listening to Dido and have to admit that I enjoy her quite a bit too. In some ways her singing reminds me of Sinead so it probably stands to reason that I'd enjoy her too.
Kate Wilson and Cindy Pierson. Siouxsie Sioux. Tina Root. Dolores O'Riordan. All of these ladies make me happy.
Delores isn't too shabby but other than that I don't have any lookers on my list. Since I'm not watching a DVD it's ok.

| I only own Vespertine, but I'd like to check out more Bjork | RPM Apr 17, 2002 2:00 PM | | Dear Mr. Boy, Do you mind if we go with first names, Stupid? Perhaps not, ;-) Just kiddin'. So what Bjork album(s) should I be looking at next? tia, Rick (aka Mr. M) |
| Oh, that one's going to stick... | DustyChalk Apr 17, 2002 8:32 PM | | ...in my memory for a long time. Right up there with "How about a banana?" "No, thanks, I just ate." LOL! |
| I only own Vespertine, but I'd like to check out more Bjork | stupidestboy Apr 17, 2002 11:50 PM | | call me whatever you want :)
there aren't a whole lot of albums to dig into, but i think a lot of people would agree that homogenic is one of the best albums of the 90's, and probably her best (although vespertine is damn close). the only things i'd stay away from for starters are selmasongs and telegram. selmasongs is the music for the movie she starred in ("dancer in the dark"). while it's good music, it's not a real bjork album on the level of the other four, and is probably worth more as an accompaniment to the movie itself than as an album on its own. telegram is a bunch of radical remixes of songs off "post." again, worth the money for the "converted" but probably not otherwise.
it's way too late. |
| Now, that's an easy one... | Audio Girl Apr 17, 2002 1:45 PM | | Lucinda Williams. Runnerup: Nanci Griffith. |
| Good call on Lucinda, and Nanci has the voice of an angel... | Swish Apr 18, 2002 3:52 AM | | although I never really heard an angel to compare her to! I have to admit that Lucinda is quickly becoming my favorite, but I have to give the proper respect to pj harvey, Liz Phair, Ricki Lee Jones, and, oh man, there are too many for me to pick a favorite. How you doing Mary? You've been posting regularly, so I'm guessing you're feeling a lot better. Good to have you back on the board! |
| Rickie Lee Jones... | Audio Girl Apr 18, 2002 6:23 AM | | she is also one of my favorites. We have similar tastes in this genre. However, I haven't listened to much P.J. Harvey. Any particular recommendations?
I'm feeling much better, gaining more and more strength each day. There definitely is light at the end of the tunnel! Music has proved to be a tremendous healer in the process...
Thanks for asking,
Mary |
| I think you'd like her most recent release, Stories of the City, | Swish Apr 18, 2002 2:10 PM | | Stories of the Sea, because it's probably her most accessible thus far. That not a jab at you, but I know your tastes and this is really a good start. I like "Rid of Me" and "To Bring You My Love" about equally, and "Is This Desire" is also very good. Let me know! Also, any chance you can see Buelah in the Big D on the 24th? Perhaps you're not up to that yet, but that will be a good show. I think they're playing at a place called "Trees". |
| Beulah | Audio Girl Apr 19, 2002 2:33 AM | | Thanks for the tip, Swish. I wasn't aware that they were going to be in town. If I am up for an outing, I will try to make it! |
| Lucinda Williams | WStan Apr 19, 2002 9:01 AM | | My fiance has the Car Wheels CD and I really like Can't Let Go and Joy a heck of a lot. However, there isn't another song on the disk I can even tolerate - it's too slow, dreary, repetitive, gritty, country-ish and droning for my tastes. Are those two songs the odd ones out for Williams or do any of her other albums feature any significant quantity of similarly rocking bluesy songs? Thanks. |
| "Changed the Locks" from her s/t album.. | maf Apr 19, 2002 9:32 AM | | A tough song not to love.
The tone of the s/t album is a little more upbeat, with probably more of an emphasis to the country in "alt-country". I prefer it to "Car Wheels...", but I do think "Car Wheels..." is brilliant, just not as brilliant.
You really don't like the song "Right In Time", her voice just drips with emotion and longing in that song.

| "Changed the Locks" from her s/t album.. | WStan Apr 19, 2002 11:34 AM | | Thanks. I'll see if my local library has a copy.
Sorry, I'm not even close to feeling neutral about that or any of the other songs on the album except the two I named. Williams has a very poor voice that, depending on the song, can either be subjectively pleasingly heartfelt or incredibly grating and annoying (she's kind of the female equivalent of Neil Young or Keith Richards). I can't complain too significantly about anyone else liking her voice since I personally really like the sounds of Young's and Richard's voices, lousy as (I'll freely admit) they are. |
| Annie Haslam | HYFI Apr 17, 2002 1:56 PM | | Rennaisance is getting back together. I think they are touring Japan. Annie lives about 30 minutes from me and plays the Keswick every year.
Not too many can sing like that. Maddy Prior is a close second.
Oh you meant new girls. Susan Tedeski |
| Yes- 'Ashes Are Burning' from '73- GREAT album! | BeatleFred Apr 17, 2002 9:00 PM | | Do you know her great tune "Rockalise" from 'Annie in Wonderland'? One of the few albums still not available on CD (as far as I know). |
| Yes- 'Ashes Are Burning' from '73- GREAT album! | HYFI Apr 18, 2002 2:57 AM | | I'm not real familiar with all of her new stuff. WXPN plays her sometimes so I hear a few. I have a 2 cd set Tales of 1001 Nights that is super but Carnegie Hall is still tops. |
| Annie in Wonderland | DustyChalk Apr 18, 2002 9:31 PM | | I've seen that on CD, I'm sure of it... |
| Alison Krause | PwrPopGuy Apr 17, 2002 2:50 PM | | Most of my favorite female singers are in the country category, such ladies as Mandy Barnett, Trisha Yearwood, etc.
As for rock:
Anne & Nancy Wilson (Heart)
Susanna Hoffs (Bangles)- whatever happened to her anyway?
Belinda Carlisle
Karla Bonoff (M.I.A. for years now)
Lene Lovich- now, this one I liked not so much for her voice but her songs. Remember the song "Lucky Number"?
Enya
Good thread but kinda tough for me, Rick. |

Mary |
| That would be... | DustyChalk Apr 17, 2002 8:43 PM | | ...Milla Jovovich, distractingly good looks notwithstanding. I went all the way up to NY (from DC) to see her play live with her band (at the time), Plastic Has Memory. Had no expectations other than _The Divine Comedy_, and wasn't expecting to be particularly impressed, just wanted to be able to say that I saw her live and got her autograph and that she was more beautiful in person than she is in magazines (she is). OMG! I was blown away. At the time, I was into stuff like Garbage and Smashing Pumpkins (still am, but was more so then), and she blew them both away. Very cool ensemble work by the band members, and her songwriting was amazing, lots of unorthodox song structures, space out jams, mellow laid back organica a la Talk Talk and GYBE! and the like, chaotic histrionics, and everything in between. I do wish they had released an album. To get a _taste_, go to www.millaj.com for clips from the LA show of the same small tour (I believe NY and LA were the only two cities). |

4) Natalie Merchant
5) Shawn Colvin
6) Joni Mitchell

We'd love to join you at Patrizios (the location in Plano is one of my favorite haunts; used to frequent the HP location when we lived in Dallas).

I ordered online the Saturday they went on sale, got em 10 minutes after they went on sale, $125 each, and we are directly stage left, but down real low. We're gonna get together at Patrizios about 4:30 or so and get in the "mood"!!! I'll stay in touch via E-mail, let you know what I'm wearing so you can pick me out. Shouldn't be too crowded. Looking forward to it !!!!! |
| Response to Audio Girl's Response to DLD's response to | Audio Girl Apr 19, 2002 2:38 AM | | Cool! We are sitting stage right, section 114, about 3 to 4 rows up (in the double letter rows). They look like great seats...hubby ordered them on Wednesday night. Go figure Ticketmaster's system...
Let's keep in touch and get together! |
| Keep in touch I will | DLD Apr 19, 2002 9:26 PM | | I'm in San Francisco for three weeks, I get back May 3 hopefully no worse for wear. Looking forward to getting together. They should have Peach Bellini specials at $1per this time of year, whoopeeee!! I think our seats are directly opposite ya'lls. Section 102. |
| Have you picked up Natalie Merchants latest yet? | RPM Apr 18, 2002 3:10 AM | | OK, my original intention of this post was to give tribute to talented women (and IMO Natalie is one such artists), and I hope no one gets offended by this, but talk about exploitive marketing...I wonder who came up with the name/cover art concept for Natalie Merchants latest album Motherland?? Why didn't they just take the direct route and call it Mamagland?? : |
| If it sounds as good as she looks | DLD Apr 18, 2002 8:54 PM | | i've always liked her look. Like it even better now. And although a big fan, I don't have her latest |
| a few of my favorites | Masonjar Apr 18, 2002 6:37 AM | | Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins
Margaret Fiedler of Laika and Moonshake
Rachel Goswell of Mojave 3 and Slowdive
Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields

| Indigo Girls | Mr MidFi Apr 18, 2002 7:27 AM | | I agree w/ most of the ladies posted so far, and would rank Hynde, O'Connor, Timmons, Mitchell, and others at or near the top. But don't forget my fave folk duo!!! |

| Aretha and Laura Nyro... | Worf101 Apr 18, 2002 11:00 AM | | Both women could write, both women could sing (although Laura's voice is an acquried taste) and both women can make me cry on a very regular basis...
Da Worfster... |
| Blues women: Taylor, Connor, Saffire, Timmins | WStan Apr 19, 2002 9:25 AM | | Koko Taylor. I'm amazed that no one else has mentioned her yet - unquestionably one of the best voices in blues, my favorite female blues singer for sure. She also has had the sensibility to work with good musicians and make sure there is a good instrumental edge to her songs.
Joanna Connor. She was one of my favorites until several songs into her concert I saw last winter. Connor plays hard blues slide guitar as well as pretty nearly anyone outside of Dave Hole and I like her Slidetime album especially. I got to the show a bit late, as she was starting Slide On In, and holy cow was that a hard rocking number. Much more powerful guitar playing than anything Susan Tedeschi has ever played (although I saw her last summer and was pleasantly surprised, as she was quite decent). After a few more good, but not great songs, though, Connor started playing some weird funky, R&B tinged stuff and kept it up for the rest of the show - very disappointing. Ignoring that new stuff she played at that show, I would have to say that of the women playing electric guitar with an edge (blues, rock, punk, whatever genre), Connor is hands down the most talented, probably ever. Nice to chat with during the break, too.
Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women. These middle aged women are a trip - no one else in blues has half the cleverness or half the humor in their lyrics and they scratch out some very pleasantly catchy tunes on the acoustic guitar and piano.
Margo Timmins. Although the Cowboy Junkies has tried a number of directions other than blues over the years, their first album, Whites Off Earth Now! is still one of my favorite blues albums (and it is indeed purely blues, not the alt-country-folk-indie-rock in most of their subsequent albums). What a hauntingly great voice. |
