| I saw on Beulah on Conan the other night | cc Apr 18, 2002 7:14 AM | | For some reason I pronounced it BOY-lah, but I guess it's BYOO-lah. A pretty cool pop tune. One of the guitarists doubled on trumpet.
One of the 3 guitarists... I didn't realize there were 7 guys in this band! Has this always been the case?
Anyway, yay for Conan. He often has cool young bands. |
| Me too. | Stone Apr 18, 2002 7:36 AM | | He also had Luna on recently and Billy Bragg and the Blokes.
I don't think they've always been a seven piece and I'm not entirely sure all 7 guys are permanent members, but they may be. I do know they have a separate flutist who plays with them live on a few tunes, but she isn't a permanent member of the band.
Wow, I just said a lot of nothing...

| Speaking of Luna, free concert in NYC | metalguru Apr 18, 2002 8:46 AM | | From www.fuzzywuzzy.com ...
Luna will be playing an in-store at Tower Records on 4th and Broadway in New York City , Monday, April 22nd at 11pm. The new CD, Romantica, will be available for purchase at midnight. Come see the band play for free, meet them, and be the first to buy Romantica! This will be Luna's only live NYC performance until late June.
And from Dave in the southeast on a tenuous internet connection ...
Conan? YECH! How do you guys sit through all those inane jokes, skits and talk to hear those bands finally play at the end of the show? Or do you just luck out and remember to tune in right at the end? Inquiring minds want to know ... |
| I like Conan | cc Apr 18, 2002 7:12 PM | | Didja know he was Dean Wareham's roommate at Harvard? They borrowed a guitar amp from him to record the first Galaxie 500 album. I agree the skits and planned jokes are often inane and even embarrassing. But I think he's really funny when he's just himself. He has a kind of stock of silly personae that he goes into for just a few moments that always set me giggling. Never the toilet humor or, worse, stale celebrity insults (guess what - Anna Nicole Smith is fat!) that the skits tend to rely on.
Though there was this one where their obnoxious little dog puppet went on tour with Bon Jovi... that was pretty funny. The most entertaining thing's BJ's ever been involved in, not least because they allowed themselves to be the butt of all the jokes. |
| Triumph... | DustyChalk Apr 20, 2002 9:38 PM | | ...the insult comic dog is actually an alter ego for Adam Sandler. The episodes with him are probably the best. The one where he visited Hollywood Squares had me laughing so hard I nearly pissed myself. One of the questions was, "According to noted veterinarian Dr. blahblahblah [editor's note, I don't remember her name], should one shave one's dog?" Triumph: "I don't know about that. Now pussy, one should always shave one's pussy, but dog...?" Audience, (incredulous gasp). Triumph, "What? I'm talking about a cat, you bunch of perverts..." And then there's another scene with a poodle... WRT Conan, yeah he's sometimes like a bad SNL skit (those episodes where he introduces new characters are the worst), but I usually find him entertaining... HEY, What am I talking about, I don't watch television anymore... |
| Me three. | Rae Apr 18, 2002 7:47 AM | | They performed "Gravity's Bringing Us Down," BTW. It seemed a little flat compared to the album version but I don't know whether to attribute that to their performance or the television setting since I've never seen them live. Conan seemed to really enjoy them... I know he's always obligated to say 'nice job' or something when he comes out to shake their hands, but it seemed like he was genuinely impressed.
Hey cc, speaking of live bands on Conan, did you spin that Live from 6A CD that I sent you much?
~Rae |
| I spin it... | cc Apr 18, 2002 7:03 PM | | I wouldn't say much but I enjoy it quite a bit, especially the Bowie track. I should have acknowledged before - it's an excellent performance. I guess it doesn't really disprove some people's criticism that Earthling is just Bowie songs with d&b beats, not a true integration of the genres... but I don't see why that's such a bad thing. It's funny... I just got an email with the subject "dead man walking" earlier today. Not about the song. Or the movie.
Of the rest, I probably like Bjork the most. Why is everything Elvis Costello does so boring for the past 15 years? Even when it's "good" and not with a classical quartet. The Edwyn Collins tune is fun - he kinda sounds like the singer from Urge Overkill. Or one of them. 311 and Ani are the only ones I skip... even Jamiroquai's kinda fun. Oh, and Matthew Sweet - if I ever get to play in a stadium (play guitar, that is), I want to play "Do Ya" by the Move, too. It doesn't really sound that good in the relatively intimate "Studio 6A" but it's a fun choice. |
| Crappo! I wish you'd told me before the show... | Swish Apr 18, 2002 11:08 AM | | but I'll try to forgive you. I did see them live in Philly last year, and it was excellent. I would see them again in a New York minute. Also, they had just 6 members when I saw them. Drums, bass, keyboards, and 3 guitars, on of whom (Swan is his last name) played a lot of trumpet. Some local girl got on stage to play flute for "Gene Autry". They often bring people from the audience on stage, or so I'm told. They claimed this girl had written to them months before the show and asked if she could play that song with them. |

| Actually, I knew they were, I just couldn't do it tonight! | Swish Apr 18, 2002 1:49 PM | | I checked their web site when I heard they were headed to Cleveland. I have too many obligations, but too little time. I'm about 1.5 hours from Philly, and the show will be over really late. My day will begin at 6 AM tomorrow, so I'm sunk. I've been to the Northstar a couple times, and an acquaintance lives nearby and does occasional acoustic gigs there. He does a pretty nice job, but nothing to write home about. Thanks for the info just the same. |
