| a jazz "comp" i made - anyone want to trade? | stupidestboy Apr 18, 2002 12:20 PM | | it's a collection of jazz standards, each presented with two different takes. the original idea was to present a traditional/conservative take by one of the classic jazz vocalists, and then follow it with an interpretation by one of the 1960s' great sax-men. thus exposing listeners to three essential elements of my favorite jazz music (the singers, the reedists, and teh songs themselves). the theme took a few left turns along the way, but the general framework held together. here's the tracklist so far:
1- summertime - ella fitzgerald & louis armstrong
2- summertime - albert ayler (tenor sax)
3- prelude to a kiss - billie holiday
4- prelude to a kiss - archie shepp (tenor sax)
5- embraceable you - sarah vaughan
6- embraceable you - ornette coleman (alto sax)
7- 'round midnight - thelonious monk (solo piano)
8- 'round midnight - george russell (eric dolphy- alto sax)
9- nature boy - james brown
(ok, this is not quite a jazz standard, but it's a recognizable older song that you may know from its liberal use in the movie "moulin rouge")
10- nature boy - john coltrane (tenor sax) (live recording)
11- epistrophy - thelonious monk
12- epistrophy - eric dolphy (bass clarinet)
13- i remember you - chet baker (vocals/trumpet)
14- i remember you - björk
i can add or delete tracks if anyone wants to hear something specific.
warning- this is not for hi-fi audio nuts, as a lot of these come from mediocre master recordings and digitally compressed audio files.
double warning- the reed instrument interpretations are mostly considered part of the "avant-garde" movement that started in the 60's. |
| This looks like it will bite the big one | Darius Apr 18, 2002 12:31 PM | | Actually, I'd love a copy; it sounds great. You can e-mail me at dmehraban@vzavenue.net with your address and I will reply with mine. In return, I am happy to send you one or more of my pre-existing comps, which are listed on comp4trade but apparently the server is down or something. Well, one's a mainstream rap comp, one's a 70s new wave/post-punk comp, and one's a Byrds comp covering the pre-Sweethearts of the Rodeo period. |
| haha | stupidestboy Apr 18, 2002 12:53 PM | | judging from the reviews i read below of the smooth jazz comp, i'm sure it will bite many people's reproductive organs, be they internal or external. but not mine, and yours remain to be seen. i'll hit you up. |
| oh hell yes | Rae Apr 18, 2002 12:32 PM | | You'd better send one of these to me!

PS. What, you didn't have a version of Lena Horne singing "The World Begins and Ends in Your Combover"? |
| Darius makes sucky comps lately. Send it to me. | BradH Apr 18, 2002 8:14 PM | | Just kidding. Darius doesn't make any comps these days.
Gotta have this one. Speaking of "Summertime", last night I picked up the 3-disc
i Porgy and Bess
by Simon Rattle/London Philharmonic on EMI. It was a used copy for 27 solar credits! This one's the best.
Also, I got
i Frankly A Cappella: The Persuasions Sing Zappa.
