Were the Stones deluded on LSD when they recorded this? I am a huge fan of the Stones but, for the life of me, I cannot get into this recording. Here's a sample of the lyrics of one of the songs, "2000 Man":

Well, my name is a number
a piece of plastic film
And I'm growin' funny flowers
In my little window sill
Dont you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all
well my wife still respects me
I really misused her
I am having an affair
With the Random computer
don't you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, your brain's still flashin'
Like it did when you were young
Or do you come down crashin'
Seeing all the things you'd done
All was a big put on
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy. proud of your sun
And you know who's the 2000 man
and your kids they just won't understand you at all

These lyrics coupled with erratic instumentals make for interesting listening. Oh, well, like I said, I have too much time on my hands :-)

Yeah, the Stones following the Beatles into psychedelia is not always a happening thing. Between Aftermath and Beggar's Banquet they kind of went into orbit, didn't they? The cover of Satanic Majesties kills me. I saw an old video where they were dressed up like that in the ruins of a castle and acting cosmic. It looked bizarre coming from the Stones.

Y'know, Keef, he's so spiritual...heh, heh.

Mine is a later release that didn't include the infamous 3D pic. The sounds for crap too. I may pursue a better copy and give this release a little more time to grow on me :-).

Yes. :-D

"Erratic" is a good way to describe it, but the album has had something of a return to favor among fans and especially among psychedelic rockers who may not be too into the rest of the Stones' stuff. I think "2000 Man" is a great song - those lyrics are some of their (Jagger's, I guess) best, I think. Especially the line about sex with a random computer - what a prediction! Maybe Mick created the Internet... But the song's quite a piece of work, as is "Citadel," "2000 Light Years," and "She's a Rainbow." There are certainly some uninteresting jams on there, though.

One issue behind the album is that it's the first one that they produced without Andrew Loog Oldham, so they had to do it themselves. And considering the ambition and the drugs, a producer sure would have been handy. Imagine how George Martin could have helped... Another issue is that the Stones' major drug bust happened while they were working on the album. The only reason a Bill Wyman song was recorded is that Mick, Keith, and Brian weren't there that day - but they ended up liking the song so Mick sang the back-ups later.

Also there are 2 first-rate songs from the sessions that aren't on the album: "Dandelion" and "We Love You." Both are on the London Years box set, or More Hot Rocks. "We Love You" is one of my absolute faves. Most critics describe it as a good thing that Brian was discouraged from continuing to experiment by the band and by the fans' reaction to the album, but as good as Beggars Banquet is, more in the full-on vein of "We Love You" could have been even more exciting.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can pick up a copy of this one. I was astounded about the lyrics of "2000 Man"...eerily poignant. Thanks for the background on TSMR. It certainly peaked my interest to give it a few more spins!

even had the 3d album cover. Sooooo cool. Yes, a huge departure from the usual Stones (and no, not a top five personal Stone's favorite, but I'll trade Steel Wheels for it in a heartbeat), but there was going to HAVE to be a Stone's pshychedelic LP to keep up with the times, Hell, I think they did just fine. Actually, this is about the only post 66 Stones album I don't currently have. "Its so very lonely, we're 2000 light years from home......"

Hey Mary, my son called us out here in La La land and said he saw one of those tornados touch down about 200 yards from him, I think it was off I-820. Called it the highlight of his weather watching career!
Yeah, I don't hate it....BradH

....and it's a lot better than Between the Buttons. I just don't think the psych thing always worked for them, it took them away from what they did best. But you nailed it, it had to be done. And I listen to way too much psych from that era to completely trash that record. Some of those songs on it were better than what other pure "psychedelic bands" were doing.

With a capital S. What's weird about it is that there are quite a few good songs on the record, but the overall effect is way less than the sum of its parts. The overall effect is, as YECH would say, PFFFTTTT.

The account in Up & Down With The Rolling Stones suggests that the Stones sort of provoked ALOldham into leaving by sullenly playing poorly repeatedly in the studio. To which I ask: what exactly did he do in the capacity of 'producer,' anyway? Wasn't he the guy who at the 1st recording session told the engineers that he was the producer but that he didn't know anything about recording? I've never read anything that talked about any of his production ideas, which made me wonder if he wasn't just given an honorary title much as Andy Warhol was given for the 1st Velvet Underground LP when it was Tom Wilson who was the real producer.

Didn't KISS do a cover of 2000 Man?

I had the 3-D cover, I picked it up in Stockholm several years ago & sold it on Ebay a couple of years ago. It didn't make the music sound any better. It sure was a nice looking thing to have, though, if a bit silly.

You can give it all the time you want, but I suspect that for you, as for most, the best way to listen is to isolate the songs you prefer & skip the boring stuff.
