| The vinyl scrounge strikes again | BryanE Apr 21, 2002 2:46 PM | | I had to go to Bloomfield Hills for a business meeting this weekend so I loaded my fat hairy a$$ in the car Saturday a.m. and the first stop was Wazoo Records in East Lansing. Not much struck my fancy but I found one jewel:
1.Jimmy Thackery And The Drivers/Drive To Survive-It has one of his coolest songs,Cool Guitars, that I saw him play in concert.$8.25
2.Larry Coryell/Major Jazz Minor Blues-Looked interesting.A collection taken from four lps.Only $5.00.
On vinyl I scored:
3.Havin A Party/Southside Johnny-A white label,promo,best of from 1979.Marked down from 4.00 to a buck.M-
4.Nick Lowe/Nick The Knife-Promo.I don't have any Nick Lowe.Hey DLD is this any good?All of two bucks.M-
On to Flat Black And Circular.I sent Nobody an e-mail that I would be there. So while I was scrounging I kept looking over my shoulder at all the shady characters wondering if...
He was the effeminit guy? with the weird hair and all the earings or the guy in the suede cowboy jacket,Jon Voight ala Midnight Cowboy, that looked like he hadn't shaved in a week and did volunteer work at the pound putting kittens to sleep???
anyway I scored the following lps;
1.Boz Scaggs/ST-First lp with help from Duanne Allman.Terrible thing about this lp is a naked pic of D.Allman on the inside cover. That boy had some spindly legs.$3.50.
2.Tom Waits/Rain Dogs-New copy.$14.00
3.Tom Waits/Mule Variations-New copy.Time to explore some more of the Waits catalog.I can only hope he actually sings on these lps rather than that awfull screeching/screming he did on that crappy Bone Machine lp I finally got rid of.
4.Newport In New York '72/The Jimmy Smith Jam recorded live at yankee stadium,Volume 5-Check this line up:Clark Terry,Illinois Jacquet,Zoot Simms,Jimmy Smith,Kenny Burrell,B.B.King and Roy Haynes.$5.00.
5.Taj Mahal/Natch'l Blues-I only have one other Taj lp.I like him.$5.00.
6.Antibalas/Talkatif-New copy.Love these guys.Something new from the primo funk/jazz masters.
7.Lou Reed/New York-I have no Lou Reed.I had heard the song Sick Of You and loved it.Hoping the lp is a strong one.5.00
8.The Rolling Stones/Get Yer Ya Yas Out-I had one of my toothless grins on my face when I found this.A Decca FFSS British import for 5.00.What a steal. This is the second one of these I have found for five bucks.I thought the value of the Decca FFSS was much more than five bucks.the sound on my other copy is as good as it gets for a 1969 rock concert recorded live.
Nobody sent me an e-mail saying he missed my E in time to meet me.Maybe next time and I'll bring some pepper spray and leave my cats at home..
Gotta run

| Nick the Knife eh? | DLD Apr 21, 2002 8:39 PM | | Hmmm, not his best ol pardner. Its a toss between it and Abominable Showman as to his least great. A couple of great songs, one with a killer intro by, I think, Terry Williams on drums, you'll know it right off, and another called Heart. One or two others that are passable. Enjoy, and remember, it only gets better. Gotta go try to figure out WTF is happening on X-Files. Hard to after a bucketful of tequila. Mule variations is killer, some real offbeat (Phillipino Boxspring Hog anyone?), but ultimately endearing Waits. Love that Get Yer Own Ya Yas Out. Still haven't opened my ABKO LP remaster I bought new last year. |
| re: The vinyl scrounge strikes again | nobody Apr 22, 2002 6:09 AM | | Yeah, sorry I missed ya. I has a bit of an eventful Friday, so I wasn't really up and about pretty much all day Saturday, didn't see your message until Sunday.
I hope you like what you found. Waits does a little of everything on Mule Variations, screaming, moaning and actual singing. You may like it. Rain Dogs is one of his first forrays away from his early period stuff and into more experimental territory. That's a pretty good Lou Reed, and I think some of the more cynical yrics may be to your liking.
If I hear you're coming back around, the first beer's on me. |
