Anyone but Sloshy can play this one!

Snowie

Who knows better than to post after imbibing. :-)

And who learned the hard way never to say "I suck!", when having a lousy round of golf in mixed company. ;-)

Night night.

This just goes to show you, you should never judge a band soley by the description on AMG.

A third-wave ska revival (huh?) band with songs called, Date Rape, Doin' Time and Badfish didn't sound like a band I'd want to pursue.

But then when I was looking for music for Davey and Snowie's 1997 Comp, I noticed the band had been given a top ten rating on a number of lists. And then I remembered you mentioned playing this band while umm... entertaining a member of the opposite sex, and I thought, well... Patrick's a smart guy (I'm basing this assumption on the "odds" thread). He wouldn't play offensive music while entertaining a member of the fairer sex, would he? ;-)

So far I've only heard 40 Ozs to Freedomand Wrong Way, but basing my opinion on these two songs, I really like this band!

Are these songs representative of their music as a whole, or did I just get lucky? For those keeping score - the answer would be NO! ;-)

Ummm... just listened closely to the lyrics. Maybe a little questionable, but you gotta appreciate the humour of a band that names an album, Stand By Your Van. Melodic, nice vocals, nice beat, a touch of reggae, kinda warped Beach Boys meet Bob Marley. Hah!

I only have 40 oz. To Freedom and their untitled third album. I would start with the latter, in fact I think it's a "must have" album. Yeah, there were a bunch of over-played singles but six years later I think the album as a whole still stands up. It's funny to me that their biggest hit ("What I Got") was such an obvious "Lady Madonna" rip-off.

I think they were just on the verge of greatness when Bradley Nowell over-dosed. Musically, they found their sound but the juvenial lyrics probably would have lessened with successive albums (yeah, pure spectulation).

Very sad that they never had the chance to make their masterpiece.

I don't think Sublime is the right type of music to set a romantic mood, Snowie. Whatever does it for you though.....;-)

So my recommendation is to get their 1996 untitled album. 40 oz. IMO isn't nearly as good.

NP: Eleni Mandeil Wishbone (thanks, Snowie! :-))
1996?Snowbunny

I guess that's one reason why it didn't make Davey's 1997 list. I have no idea where I got the impression it was a 1997 release.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sloshy. You are just full of surprises, aren't ya?

Snowie

P.S. Give Eleni a chance to sink in, Pat. I do think she's an aquired taste. Kinda like NIN. ;-)
I heartily disagree!Rae

You'll get no argument from me that their s/t is a great disc, with some great singles on it, but 40 Oz. to Freedom is one of my favorite albums of all time and IMO their crowning acheivement. It's got such an amazing flow; that sprawling, sort of half-assed attitude that they just seem to embody-- sitting around drinking 40s and smoking weed, listening to old punk and reggae records (witness all the different half-covers and references on the disc), playing with the dog... it just seemed like on their s/t that they were trying too hard. Bradley wrote great songs on that record, but he wasn't quite the beautiful loser that appeared on 40 Oz (or Robbin' the Hood for that matter). Just my opinion and of course you're entitled to yours...

...well, put it this way: I like every song on the last one. I do think 40 oz. is very good. As a matter of fact, just a few week ago I finally replaced my ancient dubbed cassette with the CD.

I think Snowie would like the last one more as well, or at least as her introduction to the band. There's also much more of a rap/hip-hop element on 40 oz. (or, I should say it has more prominence). I don't think Bradley was trying too hard either but I do think he was focusing on the rock/punk side more. They're both very good but if someone were going to get just one I'd always recommend s/t over 40 and I'm sure you'd recommend just the opposite.

How about the newly released 20th Century Masters Snowbunny

Or better yet, maybe I'll just have to discuss this private-like with you, Sloshy. ;-)

He must be back from the fill in the blank concert by now!

I couldn't find that tracklist either, Slosh. Of course, I only looked on AMG. I'll look for it when I'm in the big city. Sublime is American, right?

Yeah, they're from SoCal.

Rae has been so extremely generous I wouldn't be able to sleep either but I'm pretty sure his reply was tongue-in-cheek, so go to bed. :-)
Sublime's 20th Century Masters is apparently just a title right now ...dbi

the release date I've seen is the end of October and no tracklist is available yet. I guess they have another "greatest hits" package and also a DVD coming out too (or maybe they're already out).

I'm not sure you would like a whole album by these guys, Snow. At least I don't :-) The singles are pretty good, though. I only have the first one (40 oz to Freedom) and haven't listened to it that much but I only picked it up in the last year (one of those titles they practically give away at A&B Sound, it's priced so cheap). I remember when their big label album came out in 1996 it got lots of publicity and critical attention, partly due to the death of the singer, but I was only buying vinyl at the time so held out hoping they would put it out on LP but they never did. At least they didn't get it at any of the stores I hung out at and there were tons of other old and new bands to explore that did cater to the vinyl crowd, so it was soon forgotten .... until years later in Rave Recs land :-) Actually, two or three years ago they seemed to enjoy a renassaince of sorts, with a bunch of new and/or unreleased collections hitting the stores and apparently more on the way. I'm not sure where all this extra attention came from. Did they do anything else after Brad died? How do you have a greatest hits package when you only have three albums to your name?
well, really only two.Rae
Aug 14, 2002 8:41 AM
In my estimation, the only two "real" Sublime LPs are $0 Oz. to Freedom and the s/t. Robbin' the Hood is an extended dub experimentation that features mostly versions of songs that appear on one of the other two records. And then there's Secondhand Smoke (the b-sides & rarities collection), Stand by Your Van (the live album), Bradley Nowell & Friends (another collection), and the previously released greatest hits, which was really criminally short (not just in giving short shrift to the band's material, but overcharging the buyer for really very little music). I have no idea what's going to be on these new collections, but considering the disparate mishmash of discs that are out there, which are frankly mostly filler aside from the two LPs, it'd be nice to have something comprehensive that separates the wheat from the chaff.

As far as the other guys in the band, I know that they worked with the Long Beach Dub All-Stars for a while, and now Bud Gaugh is working with Krist Novoselic in a sidemen-from-bands-with-dead-frontmen group called Eyes Adrift.

Don't worry about me... in time, my wounds will heal...

Actually, I didn't go to a concert last night, for the first time in a while. I stayed home, did some laundry, and baked some cookies (which turned out poorly, I might add).

Yeah, like Pat said, Sublime is from SoCal. "that Sublime sound still straight from Long Beach"
