| Peter Gabriel Recommendations? | Snowbunny Aug 12, 2002 8:16 AM | | So far, the only <i><b>Peter Gabriel</i></b> album I own is <b>So</i></b>. If anyone is familiar with the illusionist, <i>David Copperfield</i>, they'll remember that he liked to use <i><b>Peter Gabriel</i></b> songs to set the mood on his television specials. The songs were always sexy, romantic and dreamy, with lots of interesting percussive sounds.
My preference would be, to just cut to the chase, and get a box set of some sort. Any recommendations?

| 16 Golden Greats | TodH Aug 12, 2002 9:00 AM | | Snowie,
my rec would be to get the greatest hits package "16 Golden Greats". It's a good starter package plus it has an excellent re-recording of "Here Comes The Flood".

| I got a couple | dbi Aug 12, 2002 9:16 AM | | While it's generally not recognized as his best, I've always liked his first album the best, the one with the excellent opening trio of Moribund the Burgermeister, Solsbury Hill and Modern Love and the closing block of Down the Dolce Vita and especially Here Comes the Flood. Very nice album. It's usually known as "Car" nowadays. That would be my pick. But the third one which is now called "Melt" is probably his best with almost every song a standout and closing with the now kind of overplayed Biko. I also really like Passion with it's sound seeming to sweep across a Middle Eastern desert, aided by some of the, at that time, rising stars of world music like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Yousou N'Dour and Baaba Maal. Even Jon Hassel providing some desert wind-like trumpet. Beautiful album.
Those are my picks. I was never a big fan of So although I do love a couple of the songs, most notably Mercy Street and In Your Eyes. Funny, I have a 45 RPM 12" single of In Your Eyes with Biko on the B-side and I was just listening to it recently. Amazing sound and it has an additional 7 plus minute "special mix" of In Your Eyes that foretold things to come on the Passion soundtrack with a more African sound and the inclusion of Youssou N'Dour vocals. |
| "Security" is incredible. | Dave_G Aug 12, 2002 10:04 AM | | Get the remaster.
Listen to it loud and alone.
It'll knock you out.
It's way way clean and clear and ton's of great percussion and drumming and incredible lead vocal work.

| My faves are... | Mr MidFi Aug 12, 2002 10:56 AM | | Security, So and Us...in that order.
The first one is an incredible mish-mash of styles... everything from hard rock (Modern Love) to big-band blues (Waiting for the Big One) to barbershop quartet (Excuse Me) to prog (Slowburn). I like it, but it's not for everyone. |
| I vote for the third self-titled, aka <i>3</i>, aka <i>Melt</i>. | Stone Aug 12, 2002 12:38 PM | | Although I really like <i>Security</i> and the first self-titled album quite a bit too.

| What would you like to see on your box... | DustyChalk Aug 12, 2002 8:39 PM | | ...box<i><B>set</I></B>, that is? ;-P I don't know that one exists, though. :-( As others have said, there is a single-disc compilation called <I><B>Shaking the Tree -- 16 Golden Greats</I></B>. And yes, try to get the remaster, even though the original one wasn't that bad. <I><B>So</I></B> is probably his best album, or at least marked a creative peak in a couple of ways. Stylistically, I would say that <I><B>Us</I></B> is probably closest to it. I would recommend getting that next. I personally like the third untitled/eponymously titled album and <I><B>Security</I></B> the best, and knowing how much you like cacophony, I think you would like them, too. I would recommend getting them after <I><B>Us</i></B>. This was a very noisy, very synthetic, almost industrial period for him, and both were landmark albums in a lot of people's eyes. Groundbreaking stuff. (This was the period from which "Games Without Frontiers" and "Shock the Monkey" came from.) Not familiar with David Copperfield, other than his biggest magic trick was getting Claudia Schiffer to date him. :-) No, seriously, was the music mostly or all instrumental? Then it was probably mostly from <I><B>Passion -- Music from "The Last Temptation of Christ"</I></B> a really good instrumental album that stands on its own. It was amazingly good, but his recent release <I><B>Long Walk Home -- Music from "Rabbit-Proof Fence"</I></B> is, dare I say it, better. Finally (of his instrumental work), (the soundtrack to) <I><B>Birdy</I></B> has a lot of instrumental work, too. He might have used some music from there. No, wait, I just remembered...<I><B>Ovo</I></B> -- I have no idea...I need to pick this one up, eventually. I agree with dbi, the first has always had a special place with me, too. Yeah, you've probably heard "Solsbury Hill", but that song actually never gets old, and that combination of "Dolce Vita"/"Here Comes The Flood" is so powerful...highly recommended. At this point, the only studio album I've left out is his second. Save that for last. I don't know, you may like it, but...it's a little weird, and inconsistent. I don't know...with the cacophony thing, I think you might like it, but you will find some disposable tracks on it as well. MHO. Something else you <i>have</I> to look up is the song he did on the <I><B>City of Angels</I></B> soundtrack, "I Grieve". OMG, that might just very well be his best song ever. It ties in with the movie without tying in with it too much, and it moves along in a couple of different sections, sorta like "Don't Give Up" -- highly recommended. And no, it's not on the compilation. Too recent. :-( He's also working on another album. I have no idea when it's due, and I would ignore dates if I heard them. He doesn't exactly crank them out. |
| Thanks for the recommendations, all! | Snowbunny Aug 13, 2002 7:24 AM | | Has anyone ever heard <i><b>Come Home to Me Snow?</i></b>
I just noticed it listed on AMG. It sounds pretty experimental, and only received two stars. But with songs like <i>Words For Snow</i>, I wouldn't mind hearing it. :-)
Does anyone know the full name of the song, <i>Snowflake Was Born On a Cold...</i>?
