Open-topic Monday, anyone?PwrPopGuy
Aug 12, 2002 8:37 AM
To get this slow-moving forum jump-started today, does anyone have some general topics that you'd like to discuss? Stupidest people behavior, things in the news, TV, personalities in the news, gripes & complaints, whatever. Let's have an open-topic thread... let's see, I'll start: this weekend I went and saw the latest Clint Eastwood flick, "Blood Work". Good movie, 3 1/2 stars, but I was hoping for a more Dirty Harry personna from Clint, but I guess he's been there, done that. Regardless, it was a nice little who-dun-it, serial killer flick co-starring Jeff Daniels. Which brings up a real pet peeve: before the flick started, we had to watch <b>TWO</b> TV commercials on the big screen, one for Master Card and another one that I don't recall who the sponsor was. What's this all about? I paid $7 friggin' bucks for my ticket, why the heck have they gotta show commericals? I'd much preferred to see a preview instead of that crap, or hell, even a cartoon like in the old days.

Let's hear it- what you wanna discuss?

If you were a Transformer, what kind of car do you think you'd be? For that matter, what kind of car do you think <i>I'd</i> be?

Did anyone ever see the Transformers movie? It was pretty sad when Optimus Prime died. That's the kind of thing that scar a kid for life.

really like Iron Giant.

As for your questions, I think you'd be a Honda Civic, but I don't know why. I think I'd be a 63 Vomit with a throw up roof, but I don't know why.(Actually, I had a classmate in high school, many moons ago, who had a '63 Comet Convertible, and that was what we called it...)

Did you know that a Honda Civic was my very first car? It was an '86 hatchback and it was beige. It was also my very last car.

I asked this question to a guy here at work and he said "I dunno, a Camry or something." What does that say about his self-image?

I'd want to be a bicycle. Maybe a yellowbike! That'd be pretty punk.

My wife bough a VW beetle . . .Troy
Aug 12, 2002 9:20 AM
. . . fairly recently. I insisted on a turbo though. Thing goes like stink, but it has terrible torque steer. Also that "A" pillar arcing out there 3 feet ahead of where every other car's A pillar is actually blocks the drivers view of the apexes of left hand curves. Ridiculous when driving fast thru the mountains. Girl car.

Anyway . . .

We took our first longish ride in it this weekend, about 350 miles round trip, to visit some friends upstate. My new biggest gripe with this car is that it does not have an in-dash CD player. Rather, it has a 6 disc changer in the trunk. What a stupid thing THIS is. I don't know what I want to play next, let alone 6 discs from now. What if Mrs. Troy stuck a bunch of newage (rhymes with sewage) discs in there without telling me? So now I gotta pull over and get into the trunk to change discs? What if the trunk is filled with stuff? What's disc 4 again? Arrrgh!

A friend of mine bought Subaru with a 6 disc in dash unit. This makes a lot more sense. He just shoves 6 discs in the slot. Much more convenient.
In-dash CD playerAudio Girl
Aug 12, 2002 9:27 AM
That was a top priority when I purchased a car in 2001.:-) I was tired of that trunk-mounted player too, even if it did hold 12 disks. Sheesh, I can't count the number of times, I wanted to hear something that wasn't in the player, had to pull over, and load it in. Or go and buy some new CDs, have to get in the trunk, and half the time the thing took forever to eject. :-( I wanted immediate gratification and the ability to make changes on the fly. So, I now am the proud owner of an in-dash CD player. Oh, yes, and the automobile that it resides in! ;-)
She should have got the Jettaskewiff
Aug 12, 2002 11:54 AM
Hi Troy, you should have bought the Jetta. I have the Turbo and it just flies. It has the changer in the trunk, but also came standard with the in dash player. Fill up the changer and carry the all important "I need to hear this now" stuff inside.
The A post isn't in the way, all in all a fine car and $5000.00 less than the same engined- chassied Audi A4.

Too vanilla for herTroy
Aug 12, 2002 12:16 PM
This car being a midlife-crisis-mobile, she was interested in the beetle styling, period.

She wanted a Mini as first choice, but there was a 6 month waiting list and 5K markup on the turbo one. I put my foot down on that one. The normally aspirated one was surprisingly gutless. Cool looking car, especially the interior. I'd hate to be in one that gets run over by a Ford Excursion though . . .

Aug 12, 2002 1:35 PM
My wife has a Jetta and it's a fine car, except that it has an automatic transmission (I tried for years to get her to learn to drive manual, to no avail) and despite having a 2.0 liter engine, same as my old '88 Accord LXi, it gets 10-12 mpg fewer and is a second or two slower in acceleration up to highway speeds.

A buddy of mine who is a lawyer just bought an Excursion. One genuinely might be able to fit a Mini in the back with the third row seats down. Talk about a ridiculous vehicle. My friend joked "It's the only vehicle big enough to hold my ego!" Who says lawyers don't have a sense of humor?

According to what I see on the news, I thought 'Upstate' could only be used as an adjective prior to the proper noun "New York." This was certainly the case when Hillary was running for office.

You could time your CD changes with your need to click the shutter.

Re: Upstate- Yes, I've never heard it used except when referring to NY. There's a lot of California up there so it seems perfectly reasonable to use it here too. Of course, them New Jorkers think they own all sortsa stuff . . .

I built a big closet organizer this weekend ...dbi
Aug 12, 2002 9:30 AM
in our master bedroom closet. It's about 10 feet wide and 8 feet high with a four foot section on each side for hanging clothes with upper and lower rods and an upper and lower shelf, and a 2 foot section in the middle with shelves for storage. Girls on the left and boys on the right. Turned out pretty nice. Really makes it a lot more organized and easier to find things.

OK, how's that for off topic?

All DIY, Mary. Drew up some simple plans and then bought a bunch of white melanine covered MDF and the necessary hardware at the local Home Depot and cut it to length as required and then screwed it all together and anchored it to the wall. Madison, WI seems like a pretty cool town.Stone
Aug 12, 2002 9:45 AM
Unfortunately, I don't get to spend a lot of time seeing the town when I'm there (which has been 3 times in the past few weeks and likely again later this week). I have been to State Street a couple times though which I bet is great when the students are around, and did find a few CDs I haven't been able to find locally. Seems like a cool college town (with the whole capitol thing mixed in).

Who are the Rave Recers that are there? stupidestboy and WStan? Or was it someone other than WStan? What's in Madison that I shouldn't miss? Anything?

Stone
I was just there!Rae

Tell me you weren't there this weekend! I rode down with stupidestboy to help him move into his new place (which is hella cool; "like a dream world," my friend maz said) and see a certain somebody in concert at the Barrymore. Let me know next time you are visiting and perhaps I will hound it down there for a <i>rendez-vous</i>...

~Rae

PS. My "don't-miss" Madison attraction is the Sunroom Cafe. We ate breakfast there yesterday morning and it was great-- I had the "Veggie Scramble." The prices are a little on the expensive side so I don't know if I'd hang out there all the time if I lived in town, but if you're just looking for a good place to eat while visiting I'll give it my "seal of approval."

Aug 12, 2002 1:46 PM
as opposed to complimentary, that is. Jeez, I wish we had the edit function still. It's hell being so anal. :-)

I like my P3 quite a bit so far. I got a good deal from a Canadian guy on Audiogon - it had never been used even. However, I've found the bargain vinyl bins to be dangerous. I've been finding all kinds of stuff from the 80s for really cheap and have no time to listen to it.

The honors for first play on my P3 went to the Lucksmiths. I'd been saving the sucker until I got a decent table. I bought a Record Doctor II also.

So, I see you're getting a new CD player. Do you prefer an integrated unit over using a separate transport and outboard DAC? Currently I'm using an outboard DAC with a DVD player for a transport.

Stone

Oh, and BTW, I REALLY believe you'd have nothing uncomplimentary to say. Mmmm hmmmm. Sure. Liar, liar, pants on fire.

The player is integrated. I don't think I could deal with all those pieces of equipment, + their cords, + etc. I like things simple. Haven't ya figured that out, during our interplay during the last year & a 1/2???

Good to hear your are enjoying the P3. I've got some 80s stuff I'd love to sell ya on the cheap when you are ready. :-)

Madison, WI is a very cool town.WStan

Madison probably has more good restaurants per capita than almost any other city in the country. I can list a dozen or so great ones off the top of my head. It's an excellent place to live because of all the various activities available, the very low crime rate and the sense of civic pride (notwithstanding the fact that our politicians have recently been making national news for being corrupt as hell, but I figure they are just getting caught for doing the same sort of illegal election-related crap that politicians everywhere else are doing without discovery). I've found, though, that it's not the world's most touristy town - my folks haven't fully appreciated why I like it so much, as they have run out of the typical tourist type stuff to do and see in their first three or four visits.

Next time you're in town, best places to go for beer are The Great Dane Brew Pub (also one of the best restaurants in town - I had my rehearsal dinner there a few months ago), the Angelic Brewery (smaller selection of microbrews, but has excellent stone hearth-style pizzas and the best beer cheese soup in the world). For spicy, outstanding and different Asian cuisine, try Vientiane Palace for Laotian food (much better than Thai) or Bandung for Indonesian food. For breakfast, Lazy Jane's has every other place in town beat hands down (best waffles and granola you'll ever have). For entertainment, Luther's Blues is a great club and the Annex features younger, more indie rock style performers. If you like the theater, see if you can get tickets to the nearby American Players Theater in Spring Green - they have an awesome outdoor theater, a cast of actors with national experience and their version of Taming of the Shrew this summer was the best play I've ever seen.

Heck, if you or Rae or anyone else is soming to town anytime soon, let me know and I'll shoot you an e-mail attachment of the detailed restaurant and nightlife guide I made for my out of town guests for my wedding earlier in the summer. My e-mail is whinystan43@hotmail.com

I have one more payment on my car, and I feel as though the damn thing is starting to fall apart on me..

Portable cd player stolen out of car.. so my only cd listening time (driving) has been replaced by listening to tapes, not all bad, but they're tapes I've listened to dozens if not hundreds of times.. I have hardly any free time at my place to work with computer on comps or to listen to music on my rig.. but I know that's selfish of me to complain since I love my fiance and I want to help her as much as I can..

Take my advice - buy the house.Swish
Aug 12, 2002 4:57 PM
Ok, maybe I'm being too forward, not knowing your situation and all, but a house is usually an excellent investment and a great tax shelter. Interest rates are the lowest they've been in the 20 + years they've been tracking them, so cheaper money can't be had. You can't write off rent payments, and you aren't getting any equity. It's always tough in the first couple years, but your income usually increases, and when you get that first monster tax refund, along with the enjoyment of really owning something - and with the appreciation of value - there's nothing like it.

I was a very young father - 21 to be exact - and it was touch and go financially for several years. My "kids" are now 23 and 19, and I've never been happier. Buying our first house was a difficult move, but a necessary one. Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best!

Hopefully the little one has stopped throwing up! One solution for stress relief, apparently, is to hold a meeting. Hope you're going to the show tomorrow. If so, and if it makes you feel any better (I doubt it), then you should know that I paid a whopping $60.00 CDN for one of those tie-dyed Yes 2002 tour t-shirts, which they are selling on their web-site for $20.00 U.S. But they are nice shirts. We went to see Signs (***1/2)and Road To Perdition (***) this weekend and last and sat thru the same crap. What bothers me is there is a whole new generation growing up who will be conditioned to accept this as normal. Us old farts in the crowd grimace during the commercials while the yung uns laugh at supposedly funny spots. I don't care how inventive or cute a commercial is, if I'm paying for a movie, I don't think I deserve to have to sit thru a commercial(s). Bad enough we're paying $3.50 each for a large popcorn and a large soft drink. End of rant

Topic 2, if I was a transformer car, I'd be a 1969 327 Camaro, automatic, gold, white naugahyde interior, with Krager Slotted disc mags and Uniroyal Redline tires with a Motorola 8 track played thru Jensen 6"x9s" in the back and 3" two ways in the front. We rented an old James Bond movie on DVD this weekend..."On Her Majesty's Secret Service." The only one of the classic old ones that I hadn't seen. As for Bond, I'm a Roger Moore man myself
Jeez . . .Troy
Aug 12, 2002 11:53 AM
. . . Roger Moore? What a fop. Those Bond movies are the worst, especially the one w/ Christopher Lee as the man w/3 nipples. Awful, awful movie.

I'd even take Timmy Dalton over him.

Lazenby was a breath of fresh air as Bond, especially after all the connery flicks. I love the scene where Bond is pretending to be the dorky kilt-wearing Scot. Connery woulda NEVER done that.
Brosnan?PwrPopGuy
Aug 12, 2002 12:03 PM
Maybe it's just me but I've yet to see one of Brosnan's films that didn't bore me. I think the Moore sense of humor is what I liked. Connery was before I ever got into Bond, and I quit following them after Moore. I've never seen the one with Lazenby.
Sean Connery WAS JB. Everyone else, pffffttters!DLD
Aug 12, 2002 3:43 PM
Pierce Brosnan as least shows potential at being a good Bond. Worst Bond girl? Tonya Roberts as an Earthquake specialist is an easy # 1 followed by the great looking Denise Richards and her two great talents as a "nuke-ler" physicist. Loved Kim Bassinger as Domino something or another in Never Say Never. The bad girl, played by Barbara Carrera, played her role with obvious relish.
True, but Lazenby wasn't that bad.BradH
Aug 12, 2002 7:03 PM
He was closer to the books than Connery. But Connery ruled. Dalton had potential but he got stuck in the pc era like the 80's Bond books. The main thing is you've gotta have an actor that looks like he might kill somebody. Moore and Brosnan look like they might model some underwear.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

...where do you think you lived, what time period, what situation? I think I lived back in the days of the clipper ships because to this day, I love to hear the creaking sound of the wood that one hears on these old ships. And, I also may have been living out West in the 1800's because I think I've had some real cowboy coffee from a tin cup, out on the prairie at night. Anyone ever wonder about this kind of stuff? (sorry, I must be getting burned out on music or something- must be an age thing, never mind me!)

...a boring, almost-middle-aged copywriter with a wife, a kid, a mortgage, and a bunch of deadlines piling up, with no end in sight...

No. Wait. That's still this life. Sorry, I lost track.
Yeah, but do you get that Fruitopia commercial?Snowbunny

Man, I've never done acid, but that's how I imagine it would be! I love that ad!

Sorry, Texas doesn't allow that kind of advertising :-) (nt)Audio Girl

Tee hee. Hi Lynn! I didn't realise this was a new post. I thought it was just silly old me, repeating myself.

I <i>do</i> think this should become a Monday tradition. I really enjoy learning more about my fellow RR buddies, and obviously, they do too! What a popular thread! You crack me up sometimes with your attempts to start a conversation Rick! I'm guessing you're a lot of fun at a party!

providing that when you say you want to show off your <i><b>guitar</b></i>, you're not referring to your <i><b>little Stratocaster</b></i>. ;-)

Do you have my e-mail addy?

No, I don't have it. Actually I used to have a Strat, wish I still did! This one is acoustic for those mellow moods :-)

We've been working ourselves a bit hard trying to unpack and finish all the painting and electrical work around the house. Since we missed the excellent Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Festival in town on Saturday (100 brewpubs and microbreweries featuring 400+ beers - sold out a month and a half earlier this year than last) for the first time in five years, we decided to have our own little beer festival with our small group of usual festival goers. My sister and her boyfriend were all set to drive up from Chicago with lots of interesting brews to contribute toward the sampling when she discovered that some friendly little band of carefree youths must have gotten bored on Friday night, so they went down the street with baseball bats bashing the windows out of half the cars on the block, including my sister's. She thus cancelled. Makes me consider that some of those Middle Eastern justice systems don't have altogether unthinkable punishments.

Anyway, our thereby very small party partook in some exceedingly fine Belgians and a few others. The real standouts were the Roddenback Alexander cherry ale and the Westmalle Tripel we had stashed in our fridge that we brought back two years ago from Belgium; they were showing their age a tiny bit, but I still thought the Westmalle was a bit nicer than the import bottle of ostensibly the same stuff we also picked up locally. There was an excellent one with a white bottle and an elephant on the label, and the Dutch La Trappe Quadrupel really passed itself off as a top-notch Belgian. Had an excellent strong ale from Quebec, called Maudite (has a picture of Satan and a flying canoe on the label) and a really unique elderberry flavored black ale (about halfway between a brown ale and a porter in flavor and body) Ebulum from Scotland that was outstanding with just the right trace of fruity berry flavoring. Not a single beer rated below an 8/10 - with Wisconsin world beat band Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeans playing on the stereo and some of my fiery homemade raspberry-cilantro salsa on the picnic table outside, it was almost as good as the real festival. Hooked my rear surround speakers up to my HT system for the first time that night and had a blast watching the new Lord of the Rings DVD and sipping a really nice California Belgian style ale called Pranquester. An excellent time was had by all.

Yesterday, I went to our local Menards store (like a Home Depot) and came literally about six inches from death in their lumberyard warehouse. I bent over to select some lengths of wood, heard a guy operating a forklift on the other side of the aisle, felt the wind whooshing through my hair and heard a huge crash. The stupid SOB on the forklift had knocked a pallet of gardening equipment weighing several hundred pounds off the top shelf 20' above me that would have hit me straight in the head if I had been standing up. I escaped untouched, luckily. To add insult to injury, I would have been hit broadside on the way home by an elderly guy who didn't look both ways before trying to drive across a major commercial road, but for having ABS on my car.

I'm hoping for a more quiet upcoming week.
