1970 Oldies but GoodiesBarryL
Aug 12, 2002 1:01 PM
Dave's 1970s comps arrived - a double set, and I'm listening right now. These are the songs that I hear on the psychedlic 70s show on Sunday. I was too young to remember any of these on the first time around, but many are golden classics, and it's a great listen.

Disk One is a bit more obscure to my ears, with tunes by Lennon, James Gang, Allman Brothers, Fantasy, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Grand Funk, Free, MC5, Lou Reed, and more.

Disk Two is more radio friendly, starting off with one of the alltime great radio singles - Little Green Bag by the George Baker Selection. We've also got 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago, Rare Earth's Born to Wander, Three Dog Night, Spirit In The Sky by Greenbaum, CCR, Guess Who, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and more. There's some great tunes here, from the days of a.m. radio and 45 rpms. Thanks for a fine double set Dave.

Thnx for the kind words Barry, and I could be out on a limb here, but I think Disc 1 may continue to grow on you. And double ditto that Little Green Bag song. I'm looking forward to your 1978 discs as well.
Ah, to be 18 again (1978)BarryL

I'm waiting for one more Cd which I ordered from Columbia House, which I hope will arrive this week. But I'm on vacation next week, so chances are nothing will go out until the following week.

Hence, I will try to find time to post my almost finalized songlist sometime today or tomorrow. I'm slightly over 80x2, so something will have to go. Perhaps The Cars? Perhaps the 12 minute track by Renaissance?

About this tune: when I bought the 7-disc Rhino set 3 years ago, I had never even heard this track. What impressed me was how good it sounded, or better yet, didn't seem to have a "dated" sound to it despite being about 30 years old. It's just a real cool song that you can play multiple times and enjoy every time.
Dave, got your Bad Songs/Good Songs comp yesterday. EEEEWWWW!! Who is Klaus Nomi? When was this thing released? Also, I'm quite curious about the next track, that awful moaning female singer, or whatever the heck she's doing. Both of these tunes, I'll add to my "Unintentionally Bad Records" comp.
Did you ever see Urghhh, A Music War?DLD

Concert footage from several venues across America (and the pond as well?) of various Punk-New Wave-Art Rock groups from I'm guessing, the Late 70's-Early 80's. Dead Kennedys, Echo and The Bunnymen, Taco, The Cramps, The Police, come to mind. To me, one of the top performances was Klaus Nomi's Total Eclispe. One of the best live performances I've ever seen captured on video. He actually had some pretty good songs, Simple Man, Total Eclipse, I.C.U.R.O.K. , You Don;t Own Me,some Elvis covers, etc., but he was really more about form over function if you know what I mean. FWIW, he was one of the first artists to die of Aids. Per AMG, he worked with David Bowie (and backed him on SNL) and Donna Summer. I think that song was from 1982.

As far as Urszula Dudziak, P U! I guess she took Yoko as a musical role model. I don't know where I got the LP from but its actually a semi collectible. I own nothing worse, and that includes Aphrodites Child's 666 and Three's The Power Of Three and Stevie Miller's infamous Macho City.

I recall that there was a beautiful accoustic song on this album called, I think, Saragosa Sea. Is it on 666? Is it as good as I remember it? I want to come at once?
666, I'll look when I get homeDLD

If I recall, there were one or 2 decent songs that somewhat salvaged it from the Urszula Dudziak Hall of Shame. But not by much. Of coourse, to use whats getting to be an old phrase around here, "Your Mileage May Vary". I've seen some here give it decent tho not rave reviews. It just doesn't work for me. As far as coming at once, I'll leave that one alone.
I think it's Aegean Sea. (n/t)BarryL

There's a tune by that name on a best-of collection I saw today at HMV (Aegean Sea). The only album of theirs I ever heard was 666 (two record set). If it isn't there, then they must have removed it to get it all on a CD. I'll have to check All Music Guide.
According to AMG, it's the seventh track. (n/t)BarryL
