I think old King Crimson is nothing but noiseDave_G

I posted this on another website too.

I know they were hip, cool, etc., but those old Crim tunes are not my cup o' tea.

Too gall dang noisy.

I just don't see how they were so popular.

The newer stuff, Discipline, Beat, Three...Pair, however, are to me excellent.

I guess because those three records have "songs" on them versus that old stuff that has "sounds".

I dunno.

I just can't really enjoy In the court, Red, Larks Tounge, etc.

Maybe Fripp was ahead of his time - making industrial rock in the 70's.

That stuff gives me headaches.

Comments?

If anyone wants to buy my copies, all mint, hdcd 24 bit remasters, except In the Court, which didn't get the hdcd treatment, let me know, 5 bucks each and they are yours.

Or I'll trade for a copy of Subterena by IQ. Not a "copy", but a real cd.

I'd be interested in Red, Lark's Tongues and Starless :-)

shall I send well concealed cash or a check? ;-)

Interesting idea, about old Crimson being 'noise' as opposed to 'Discipline' being more song-oriented. Being someone who listens to a lot of modern "post-rock" type music, listening to old Crimson is like hearing where it all came from.. the roots so to speak. It's not my favorite music on the planet, but their old stuff, esp. the 'Red' era Frip/Bruford/Wetton incarnation really pleases my brain.

hope I'm not too late ;)

Which issue of <i>In the Court</i> is it, then? I've been meaning to pick this one up for a while but I've been told by several people (including <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Aqau36jah7180">AMG</a>) that certain issues should be avoided at all costs.

I hardly think that any KC stuff is popular. Believe me, this stuff is in very few collections.

Many peepoles own this early KC stuff because it's important in the genesis of music. Yes, they WERE way ahead of their times, but I bet that very few of the people that own these albums ever actually listen to them.
Good call!Dave_G

As usual, you fill in some key points.

My copy of Subterania not good enough for you? (n/t)BarryL

It's fine, but I want the real thing!Dave_G

Thanks to you, I have become a huge IQ fan and am going to complete my collection with all of their titles.

I have been exchanging emails with Martin Offord, their keyboard player.

IQ is a part time affair, they only do it for "fun", they all have "real" jobs.

I think they kick ass. The Seventh House is absolutely stunning, if you don't have it, you must, it is simply incredible and is as good as Subterenea.

The Belew era Crimson has so much avant-garde musique concrete crap-noise it's not even funny. I think the difference is that it used to be done in a free jazz style and now it's all done electronically. Face it, Geezer Boy, you just don't like saxophones!

Have fun at the Yes gig. I'll join ya this Saturday.

Allow me to lead you,but don't think about holding my hand, down the road of good music.Of Los Lobos and other wonderfull bands that make beautifull music.Away from droning noise and ear pollution that you have tortured yerself with for years.

First it's KC and then before ya know it...
YES the draded KKKKKansas will begin to wear on you and sound like the twaddle it really is.

I can rest easy tonight knowing I have helped you in your conversion.

You have to convince him that Martin Orford of IQ is the devil.

As a drummer i need to say that King Crimson is incredible. I only actually "own" discipline, but i think i have like 8 or 9 of their records on my computer in whole. Red, in the court and discipline are my favorite cd's i think. These guys can groove...

Also, if those cd's are seriously for sale still, i'll buy them all right now. Just let me know. jarz0003@umn.edu

Red is deliberately noisy (see back cover, for example). Lots of distortion. (Of course, I remember there being distortion on Discipline, too.)

It's not for everyone, but...I can't believe you like some Crimson, and you don't like Red!?! Maybe you just don't like Wetton's voice?

I put together a version of Red that removed Providence (I don't usually like that scat free jazz stuff either -- blech! -- just don't get it), and replaced it with Fracture -- "<I>Fractu</i><b>Red</B>", I called it.

"One More Red Nightmare..." bow-bow-bow bo-bo-bo-BOWWWWWWWWW...
