OK, I feel stupidJDaniel

And it's not the first time.

I use NERO Burn to make my cd's. Never had any problem, but one one thing that's always irked me is the disc info. I tried, unsuccesfully, to use the "internet" button to download the album/song titles. After the first couple of "cd info not found", I quit using that feature. So I've painstakenly, manually entered each song title for every cd I burn. The Nero manual is useless BTW.

Then, recently, I tried the internet option again - and what do you know - it works flawlessly. I've yet to enter a cd in two weeks that it didn't recognize (and I've tried some obscure, OOP titles). Man, if I'd have tried this months ago.

Some Nero questionsWStan

1) How do you do the internet disk info bit? Does it connect automatically to an online database (AMG maybe?) Do you have to be online already or does it automatically dial up?

2) Does Nero have a sound level adjustment feature? If so, how does it work? I've got a couple of CD's I eventually want to use for comps that are literally half the volume of the average one and are borderline unlistenably quiet at normally moderate listening volumes, so I'd like to equalize the levels up to around average.

Thanks!

I use one of the versions of Nero (can't remember which, and I'm at work right now) and this is a guess, but I'm sure it connects to CDDB to get the info and I doubt it'll dial up automatically.

The version I have does have a sound level adjustment and normalization feature. You can basically set it to whatever noise level you want and normalize the track to that level. It works nicely. It has other editing features too, such as fading in and/or out and deleting part of a track (which I normally use for stuff transferred from vinyl - it gets rid of the "space" before and after the music).

However, I haven't figured out if I'm able to merge two files together with it though. I used the old Roxio program that came with my burner to do that for the 1985 comp I just did.

Some Nero questionsJDaniel

WStan,

1. Yes, you have to be online already. I have dial-up, so I just start the connection right before I open Nero. By the time I've inserted the cd, and selected the tracks, my internet connection is up & going.

After you select the tracks, a cd window pops up where you can either manually enter the disc info, or you click the internet tab. It automatically goes out to an internet database and downloads the disc info, usually in 10 seconds or less. It doesn't even load a webpage - my homepage stays up & running while Nero does it's thing in the background. It does an amazing job - disc title, song titles, song time & cumulative time etc. I burn most of mine on the fly (i.e. don't copy to hard drive), and it works great.

2. Yes, Nero does have sound level adjustments. I've never used them, but have seen them. I'll play around with it tonight if I get time, and post a response tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll have to try the internet data base and the sound level adjustments soon. I've been so busy all summer I haven't had a chance to look at burning any disks for a month and a half, but I owe some disks to people, I might be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel soon and I'll see about sitting down with the computer sometime this week.

The big problem I've had, and I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software problem, is that I can't copy on-the-fly from my CD ROM drive to my CD burner - it just doesn't work, so I have to read from my burner onto the hard drive, then take out the source disk, put in a blank CD-R and then burn, which takes me about double the amount of time that it should. I actually thought about upgrading my 16x Lite On burner to a newer, faster one lately, as I saw a 24x burner for $9 after rebates and some 32x and 40x ones for$30-50, but since I've got a stack of around 80 blank 16x speed CD-R's that won't record any faster on a faster burner, I figure I might as well wait a year or two until I go through them before considering any further upgrades.
Thanks for this post, JD - Nero Burning etc...Snowbunny

I also use NERO BURNING (love that name) and NERO EXPRESS which came with my external burner. So far, I much prefer it to my other burn program, EasyCDCreator-DirectCD which came with my LG internal burner.

I was also skipping the disc info option for the same reasons! Just tried it again, and you're right! Thank you for saving me a ton of time!!! Maybe all us NERO users could forward tips to each other via e-mail, as we figure out this program. :-)

BTW, do you know what a WMA disc is, or a Super Video CD (SVCD)? Also do you know if you can record music off of DVDs if your computer has a DVD player? I did just ask this question in another thread, with no response. :-(

either on another AR board, or at HTForum, that you can burn the music off of DVDs onto cdrs. I don't have a DVD drive in my computer, so I've never tried.

I also saw this thread earlier today in the gen. forum, which talks about DTS cds:

Woochifer "DTS Music Question..." 8/12/02 5:59pm

Sorry, but can't help w/ the WMA or SVCD questions.

I'm not really PC savy but my best guesses:

WMA = Windows Media Audio?
Super Video CD is just another form of VCD. Couldn't tell you what makes it super though ;-P

My friend has burned audio from DVDs to CD-R on his computer but I'm not sure what DVD software his DVD drive has. But he said the only way he could get it to work was to first convert it to two-channel Dolby Digital (even if the source DVD was PCM stereo or DTS), then convert that to analog and finally, burn that as a wav file. Needless to say, sound quality wasn't very good. I burn DVD to CD with my stand-alone burner with very good results. I don't have a DVD drive on my PC but even if I did, I doubt I'd use it to extract audio after seeing all the steps involved. There must be an easier way than my friend's method though.
Thanks for nothing, SloshSnowbunny

:-)))

I owe you that for attaching the Is it clever to be sober when easy? comment to my thread! ;-)

Yeah, I know, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular. :-)

That does sound like a convoluted way to extract the music. I was thinking I could start buying DVD's instead of CD's, since it looks like DVD's are here for the long haul. Or at least for a year or so! I'll give this method a try on my one and only DVD!

Hey, what kind of DVD's do you burn to CD's? Do you mean movies and such? Thanks for real, Pattycake.

Concert DVDs of course. Don't have many but the ones I do have are very good.

James Taylor Live At The Beacon Theatre
Roger Waters In The Flesh - Live
Eagles Hell Freezes Over
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble Live At The El Macambo
Various Artists (they're a pretty decent band, eh ;-)) Music For Montserrat

Plus a few DTS CDs (because my CD player doesn't pass a DTS signal at its digital output)

James Taylor, The Eagles! Who'd a thunk?

You been holding out on me, Sloshy? Trying to look cool for the guys. Where's your Tool, your Nine Inch Nails, your Smashing Pumpkins!

;-)

Plus a few DTS CDs (because my CD player doesn't pass a DTS signal at its digital output)

Geez, I hate when that happens! (And while I'm looking confused, I may as well ask - what does FWIW mean?)

I have all of those albums :-)Slosh

For What It's Worth, I don't have to act. ;-P

Sorry, I tend to assume because this is mainly an audio equipment site, everyone knows what I'm talking about. DTS discs need to be feed to a DTS decoder by a CD or DVD player's digital output, but my CD player isn't DTS compatible so I have to use my DVD player instead.

it's just Microsoft's attempt at creating their own MP3 type format.. WMA's take up less space than a typical MP3 and (to my ears) sound just as good (if you could call any compressed format good), if not better, if you get a good rip. Most of your portable MP3 players also will play WMA's.. I'm not sure why Windows decided to do this, because it just makes things more confusing.. :-/

if you're lucky like me you have both a dvd player and a
cd-r deck, just run the analog out from the dvd into the analog in of the cd recorder and wa-la :-)
