Retro TalkMike
Aug 14, 2002 7:58 AM
Just got back from a 2 week family holiday in Florida, I've got to say we've never been before and we really enjoyed it, what a great place. You guys live a nice life out there everything is so cheap, cars, houses, food, just about everything compared to the UK. And Americans especially the bits we visited are just so polite and friendly.

I listened quite a lot to a local radio station whilst in the car playing 'soft rock and roll from yesterday and today' which was great for two weeks but with a playlist of about 100 songs I'm not sure I could stand it for much longer. As for the 4 channels of religious goofiness on the TV, I can't quite get my head round that, still horses for courses.

Hey and thanks for the pleasant surprise RPM when I got back, I've not had time to fully digest them yet but I do like Chillus Maximus already. I'll sling something back your way soon by way of thanks.

Anyway on to retro talk - this must have passed me by when it was first kicked around cos it's all new to me, what a great idea is this one of yours PwrPopGuy?. Just done a quick search and it looks as though nobody has yet picked 1994 so I'm grabbing that one, it will take me a week or so but then I'll offer it up for trade.

Sorry to hear about your illness Jim get well soon. Your posts are always witty and fun to read and you seem like a really nice guy who deserves better.

Cheers
Mike
Thanks for the note Mike, glad you had a nice vacation (not "holiday") ;-) (NT)RPM

TodH "Retro Comps update" 8/6/02 6:57am

... although I still think it would be fun to have two different people do the same year, as long as they had alternate takes on it. And I'd like to place my preorder for whatever you sign up for. I did 1995 and Snowbuns and me were working on a 1997 collaboration but she seems to be trying to ditch me now so who knows what will happen there :-)
I'm here for you Snowie..Masonjar

I thought I'd picked one nobody had chosen yet, it looks like Tod has some good ones in his list. That's ok I'll pick another year and let you know when I'm ready.

Hey Mike, I don't know when you'll get back to the states but the next time you're on the east coast, swing on up N.C. way. Glad you had a good time. Did you go to Disney World? I thought it kind of odd you hadn't signed on for the Retro series- can't wait to hear your version of 1994. I'll go ahead and burn you a hot copy of '77 and get it headed across the water to you. I don't know if I told you but I've got some good tickets to see McCartney in October!

Yeah we did the whole Disney/Universal Studios....Mike

Busch Gardens/Seaworld/Wet'n'Wild park thing. We didn't plan to do as much as we did but with a 4 year old in tow it's hard not to. Like I said great holiday can't wait to go back, so you never know we might take you up on the offer.

Looks like I'll skip 1994 with TodH picking it up but I'll pick another year and send it your way. Looking forward to hearing your '77.

I tell you what Rick I loved the local FM radio radio station we listened to (WMMO) in the car it was all classic rock acts of yesteryear Boston/Eagles/Cars/REO/ZZ the sort of stuff we don't hear on UK radio at all. Also there was quite a bit of McCartney. Over hear he hardly gets played at all and I hadn't realised just how popular he is over there, should be a good show.

Cheers

The last time I went to Disney World was pre-Epcot/Universal- 26 years ago! I really need to go back, my parents went about 4 years ago and keep talking about wanting to go back- they're in their late 60's.
Wow, so you don't get to hear those Classic Rock bands, huh? What's popular on the airwaves over there? Can't wait to see Paul especially since his Driving Rain tour has been getting great reviews.
As for your question about the Retro Comps, I must take credit as the instigator! I hope that after this initial wave, the regulars here will keep doing them every now and then- I know I will because I'm really enjoying what I've heard so far, although I haven't heard dbi's yet- hope I don't have to do an alternative version :-)...but there's some more years I know I'll wanna do.

UK radio basically sucksMike

In the UK you have to realise for a long time it was dominated by a single national radio station (Radio 1) the whole of the UK is only half as big again as say Florida. But what you have now is a cluster of national radio stations which tend to play current Pop/R'n'B stuff throughout the day with garbling DJ's and not the music. The music tends to be very much what is in vogue at the moment. On an evening you do get more specialised evening shows but by that time most people have other things to do with their time.

We also have local independent stations which can be good, but not a great playlist. Either way it's a limited formula, which is why I don't listen too much to radio in the car.

Cheers
Mike
