Comps on the platter last evening (CRS, Pwrpopguy, Hyfi, Doug)...RPM
Aug 14, 2002 8:09 AM
Last night I had a rare evening alone at home. Mrs. RPM and the RPMlets were away visiting friends and relatives, so I had the house (and the audio system) all to myself. When these opportunities occur, I generally take a few minutes up front and set things up properly, pulling the speeks out into the middle of the room, rearranging furniture, etc. in order to get the best acoustics.

Finally, the dog and I were fed, the few chores I had were done, and the room tweaked. I opened a Newcastle Brown ("Broon" right Les?), loaded up the 5-disc changer, plopped down on the sofa in the sweet spot, and hit play. For the next few hours, (minus the time needed to retrieve and relieve a few beers), I listened to music. No interruptions, no requests to turn it down, no TV or computer in the background to distract...ah, it was great!

So what did I listen to you ask? Comps. Stuff that I've had for awhile now but I've neglected giving proper time to. Here they are with some brief comments:

1) Rockin' Acoustic mix from Pwrpopguy: I've listened to this one several times before, but never with any level of focus, it was always background music. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed these songs last night. Maybe it was being relaxed (or maybe the few beers helped ;-)), but these (mostly vintage) songs came across great. Even though there were lots of familiar names here, I hadn't heard several of the specific songs before (i.e. the tracks by The Eagles, Clapton, Badfinger, and Bigstar). The comp is consistently good and will be getting more future spins when the mood is right. I seem to recall that this was a group effort, if so, my compliments to the contributors.
Favorite tracks: Love Ain't For Keepin', Thirteen, Please Be With Me, Sandman, Train Leaves Here This Morning, Two of Us, Perfection, Wish You Were Here, Comes a Time, and American Tune.

2) Bruford comp, Kit 1 by Hyfi: This one is taking it's time getting under my skin, but it is happening. As I previously mentioned to Brian, each time I listen to the comp a new song emerges in a positive way. I guess this is not uncommon for this non-pop style music. So I'll be continuing to spin it from time to time hoping that the positive trend continues. Several songs were great from first listen, such as "America", "Childrens Concerto" and other tracks which have been growing on me are: "Boleyn", "Heartbeat", "Lucky Seven", "One More Red Nightmare", and "Split Seconds".

3) CRS vol 3.5: Gotta admit that I'm having a tough time with a lot of the material on this comp. The first half in particular offers little that I enjoy, in fact a few of the tracks border on irritating. I'll pass on commenting on these and focus on the stuff I liked. * SEE NOTE BELOW

4) CRS vol 4: Overall a much more enjoyable listen for me than 3.5. Maybe I'll combine my fav's from these 2 comps down to a single comp (CRS vol 3.75??) or something like that. Favorites from vol 4: * SEE NOTE BELOW

5) Big Mix II (Doug aka Pelv): Doug sent me several comps recently and I randomly chose this one to check out first. I must say Doug that I like your style, no rules, no format, no "politically correct" Raverecs darling bands to please the crowd. I gather that you just make comps based on stuff you like, and I respect that. Lots of unusual material here with an occasional well known artist thrown in the mix. Like I said, this was my first listen, and some of these songs are a bit "unusual" but early fav's were: "Tricycle", "Bette Davis Eyes" (haven't heard it in a while), "Song About the Moon", "Inside Out" (OK, so who are The Venetians? More info please), and "A little Soulful Tune".

Well that was my music appreciation nite. Thanks for sharing your music with me, and I hope to get another night like this soon to get to some of the other stuff waiting in the wings. :-)

* NOTE: Sorry for the teaser, but I made some song notations on the printed out tracklist for the CRS sampler comps, which I promptly left it at home. >:-[] grrrr! I'll post my favorite tracks when I get home this evening. Besides, I'm at risk of running out of space in this post anyway.

almost made it in one post!

Hey Rick (if you're still talking to me after my News of the World comments!), I'm also going to do a consolidated CRS 3.5 & 4. After we both get done, we can compare tracklists, FWIW.
can someone please tell Mr. "Guy" I said OK?RPM

Hee hee :-). That would be most interesting Rick, I should be able to knock my CRS vol 3.75 out fairly quickly since I'm pretty set with my likes/dislikes. I'll post the tracklist when I'm done.

though I can see how one might like to combine them into one.

actually, I made them so it creates one long flow.. if I may:

3.5 starts in alt/pop/rock land, moves to electronica, then into heavier territory for the last few tracks.. then 4.0 picks up where 3.5 left off, hitting you with a few more heavy ones, then backs into beat/electronica country again, then moves back into the alt/pop/rock to close out..

I must point out though that I wasn't trying to make two equal mixes.. 3.5 is pretty much tracks that didn't get picked for other CRS versions, plus some songs I picked to fill in the gaps.. 4.0 has much stronger songs I think.. I just thought I'd throw the extra set out there and see if anything would stick :-)

I sort of sequenced them to be mirror images of each other.. so I guess it makes sense, if you want to grab the ones you like from each one, a person could make a much more homogenous one cd comp.. just don't mess with my segues ;-)
